Chapter 9 : Enchanting Chaos

Chapter 9 : Enchanting Chaos

Draco burst into the Ravenclaw dormitory with a sense of urgency that mirrored the tension in the air. The news of the breach and the imminent headcount in the safe chamber had prompted him to seek out Evelyn in a haste, a knot of worry tightening in his chest.

"Evelyn?" he called out, scanning the room with a sense of desperation.

The sight that met his eyes stole the breath from his lungs. Evelyn, dressed in soft pink heart-patterned pyjamas—her cropped top just barely exposing her waist—sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by an assortment of healing salves and potions. The gentle glow of candlelight illuminated her features, casting a warm, serene light across her face as the injured cat nestled contentedly in her lap, purring softly.

The urgency drained from Draco's face, replaced by a different kind of intensity. His eyes widened, taking in the unexpected scene. He coughed awkwardly, clearing his throat to announce his presence.

"Evelyn, we need to—"

His words faltered as his gaze lingered on her. Evelyn looked up, surprise flickering in her eyes. Draco's cheeks flushed, and he found himself at a loss for words. It wasn't the time or place for such distractions, but he couldn't deny the effect she had on him.

"Draco?" Evelyn questioned, her eyebrows raised as she took in his flustered state.

"Right, yes," Draco stammered, trying to regain his composure. "There's a headcount in the safe chamber. We need to—"

His words trailed off again as Evelyn rose gracefully, the cat still cradled in her arms. Draco's gaze involuntarily dropped to her pyjamas, and he mentally scolded himself for his lack of focus.

"Headcount," he repeated, his tone more forceful this time. "We need to get to the safe chamber."

Evelyn, seemingly unfazed by Draco's flustered demeanour, nodded. "What for? Just let me grab a few things."

As Evelyn gathered her healing supplies into a tote bag, the awkward tension between them lingered. Draco cleared his throat, trying to ease the atmosphere. "You're quite the cat healer, aren't you?" he quipped, a hint of a smile playing on his lips as he reached for her robe.

Still holding the cat gently, he helped her with her supplies. Evelyn glanced up at him, her expression softening as their eyes met briefly. "I guess you could say that," she replied, a shy smile tugging at the corners of her mouth, the tension slowly beginning to dissolve.Evelyn then chuckled, a playful glint in her eyes. "Well, it's not a usual Hogwarts elective, but someone's got to do it."

Draco's gaze softened as he rubbed the cats head, his attention now fully on the cat. "Looks like you've got a soft spot for creatures in need."

Evelyn chuckled nervously, feeling a flutter in her stomach as Draco’s presence lingered near. "Well, who could resist those eyes?" she teased, her gaze drifting to him instead of the cat. But Draco, focused on the feline nestled in her arms, missed the way her eyes lingered on him, unaware of the hidden meaning in her words.

Draco’s lips quirked into a half-smile. "Not me, apparently," he replied, his gaze shifting from the cat to Evelyn. For a brief moment, his gray eyes held her, but just as quickly, Evelyn looked back down at the cat in her arms, trying to steady the flutter in her chest. The unspoken tension between them hung in the air, though neither was quite ready to acknowledge it.

Draco nodded, his cheeks still tinged with a hint of red. "Right. Well, let's get to the safe chamber. Time is of the essence."

As they hurried through the corridors, Draco couldn't shake the feeling that the world had shifted. The urgency of the situation lingered, but there was a new layer, a fluttering uncertainty that left him surprisingly off balance.

Evelyn, seemingly attuned to the shift in dynamics, couldn't resist a teasing remark. "You seem a bit flustered, Draco. Not used to a girl in pyjamas or injured cats?"

Draco rolled his eyes, a smirk playing on his lips. "I'm used to far more pressing matters, believe me."

Observing her attire and the only warm thing she held, which was a blanket around the cat, Draco removed his Slytherin robe and wrapped it around Evelyn.

As they reached the entrance to the chamber just in time for the nightly headcount, Draco nodded at Professor Thorne, subtly mouthing, "She was sick," while gesturing to Evelyn. The professor gave a brief nod in acknowledgment, allowing them to slip into their respective places without further scrutiny.

As they reached the safe chamber, the gravity of the situation pulled them back into focus. The headcount commenced, and Draco's concerns returned to the mysteries.

The safe chamber buzzed with quiet tension as students settled into their spots. Draco stood beside Evelyn, his Slytherin robe still draped protectively around her shoulders. A few students cast curious glances in their direction, but no one dared comment, too wrapped up in their own anxieties. Evelyn scanned the room, her eyes darting over the sea of faces, searching for something familiar, some sense of reassurance among the worried expressions. Despite the heavy air of uncertainty, Draco's presence beside her brought a subtle, unspoken comfort.

Rosie, their roommates, Ginny, Hermione, and a few other girls were huddled together in a corner. Rosie's eyes widened with relief as she spotted Evelyn, and she rushed over, gratitude and concern etched on her face.

"Thank Merlin, Draco, you found her!" Rosie exclaimed, her eyes flitting between Draco and Evelyn. She reached out, patting Draco on the back. "You're a lifesaver."

Draco, not entirely comfortable with the gratitude, nodded curtly. "Just making sure everyone gets to the safe spot."

Rosie turned her attention to Evelyn and the cat in her arms. "Are you okay? Both of you?"

Evelyn managed a small smile. "We're fine, thanks to Draco. What's happening, Rosie? Why are we in the safe chamber?"

Rosie's expression grew serious. "There's been a breach. The professors are checking everyone to ensure safety."

Evelyn's eyes darkened with concern, but she was still distracted, her gaze scanning the room. Rosie noticed and gave her a gentle chastising look. "Evie, be more careful. You're safe now. We're all safe," Rosie insisted.

Evelyn's mind, however, seemed elsewhere. "I'm looking for someone," she muttered, her voice distant.

Rosie sighed, exchanging a concerned glance with Draco. "Evie, this is serious stop being distracted. Who are you looking for?"

Ignoring Draco's persistent gaze, Evelyn spoke, "Harry. I need to find Harry."

Draco, his eyes narrowing, asked bluntly, "Why? What's so important about finding Potter right now?"

Evelyn turned to face him, her eyes revealing a mix of frustration and urgency. "Because he knows about the breach, I think he knew what was about to happen. He found something in the Headmistress's office, something related to the missing students."

Draco's jaw clenched as he processed Evelyn's words, trying to suppress the frustration rising within him. "Potter is involved in this?" he asked, his voice sharp. "Why didn't you mention it earlier?"

Evelyn's eyes flashed with irritation, her tone turning icy. "Maybe I would have if you actually listened to me instead of ignoring me for the past few days."

Draco felt the sting of her words but said nothing, guilt gnawing at him.

Draco's eyes darkened as he absorbed the information. The room seemed to close in around them, the tension palpable. As Evelyn resumed her frantic search, Draco couldn't shake the feeling that the mysteries surrounding Hogwarts were becoming more entangled, and the lines between ally and adversary were growing increasingly blurred.

Draco, feeling an unexpected surge of emotion, blurted out a lie without fully comprehending why. "Don't bother waiting for Potter. He's not coming."

Evelyn's eyes snapped to Draco, confusion and frustration clouding her gaze. "What do you mean he's not coming? What happened?"

Draco hesitated, his mind scrambling for a plausible explanation that would conceal the truth about the secret passage and the imminent danger. "Before I found you, I saw Potter with Weasley. They looked... together."

Evelyn's eyebrows furrowed, her mind processing the information. "Together? What does that even mean?"

Draco, determined to keep his actual discoveries hidden, continued with the fabricated story. "They were holding hands, like a couple. Happy as can be."

Evelyn's features shifted from confusion to disbelief. "Harry and Ginny? That doesn't make sense. They broke up ages ago, and Ginny is here so why wouldn't Harry be."

Draco, defending the lie, shrugged nonchalantly. "Well, that's what I saw. Just thought you should know."

Evelyn, unconvinced, shot him a scrutinizing look. "Why are you telling me this? What does it matter to you?"

Draco's eyes betrayed a flicker of something deeper, a sentiment he couldn't quite grasp. "It doesn't matter to me. Just thought you should be aware of what's going on. In case you were waiting for Potter to come to your rescue or something."

Evelyn's gaze held a mixture of confusion and concern. "I don't need Harry to rescue me, and I certainly wasn't waiting for him. What's gotten into you?"

Draco, grappling with the inexplicable lie that had escaped him, deflected with a dismissive tone. "Nothing. Let's focus on what's happening here. Potter and Weasley can sort out their own mess."

As they shifted their attention back to the ongoing situation, Draco couldn't shake the irrational sting of jealousy that lingered within him. His growing feelings for Evelyn had intensified in that moment, and the realization that he cared more than he wanted to admit gnawed at him. Yet, he masked it behind a façade of indifference, determined to keep his emotions buried beneath the surface. The mysteries around Hogwarts weren't the only enigmas he was grappling with.

The atmosphere in the safe chamber grew increasingly tense as students were organized into separate groups based on their gender. A sense of uncertainty hung in the air, and whispers of concern passed through the divided clusters of students.

As the groups formed, Rosie pulled at Evelyn with a reassuring smile. "Come on, Evie. Let's stick together in this chaos."

Evelyn nodded, her mind still preoccupied with the fabricated image Draco had planted. The confusion lingered, but she pushed it aside, focusing on the immediate situation. As they began to move towards the designated area for the girls, Evelyn instinctively reached for her robe, intending to return it to Draco.

However, just as she started to hand it over, Draco's hand gently closed around hers, preventing her from completing the gesture. His silver eyes met hers, a subtle intensity behind the cool exterior.

"Keep it for tonight," he said in a low voice, a hint of sincerity breaking through his unusual attitude he just displayed. His gaze flickered towards her pyjamas, a silent acknowledgment of the chilly atmosphere in the safe chamber.

Evelyn hesitated, caught off guard by Draco's kind gesture. She glanced at the Slytherin robe clasped in her hand and then back at Draco. "Are you sure? You might need it too."

Draco shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips. "I've been through worse. You need it more than I do."

As he gestured towards her attire, Evelyn couldn't help but feel a mixture of gratitude and confusion. She nodded appreciatively, silently accepting the borrowed warmth. With one last lingering look, Draco released her hand, allowing her to join Rosie and the other girls.

As Evelyn moved to her designated spot, her thoughts swirled with the events of the night. The enigma surrounding Draco's recent behaviour added another layer of complexity. Unbeknownst to her, Draco watched her retreating figure with a mix of concern and something more profound, the lines between ally and adversary becoming increasingly blurred in the intricate dance of emotions.
