Chapter 3: Into the Depths

Chapter 3: Into the Depths

The streets of Siheung were a patchwork of shadows under the moonlight, broken only by remnants of the town’s once-bustling life. As dawn approached, the first hints of light crept over the horizon, a gentle reminder that chaos could not last forever. Yet, for Lee Jun-seo, each moment felt like a new opportunity, a chance for discovery.

With his recent surge in strength, he felt different. The whispers of the Shadow System coursed through him, guiding him toward a more profound understanding of his potential. He understood that this was not merely a tool but a partnership. The shadows had become a part of him, offering both strength and a darker allure.

After completing his initial quest, he decided it was time to take the next step: venturing into an actual dungeon. The thought sent a thrill down his spine. Dungeons were places of danger, but they also promised immense rewards—treasures, and experience that could elevate him to new ranks.

He made his way to the outskirts of Siheung, where rumors spoke of an entry point to a local dungeon: The Crypt of Shadows. It lay hidden beneath a storm-worn hill, an ancient burial ground once thought to be sacred.

As he approached the entrance, a massive stone slab loomed before him, covered in vines and debris. The air was heavy with an eerie chill that seemed to seep into his bones, both unsettling and exciting. He placed his hand on the cool surface, feeling the pulsing rhythm of energy beneath his fingertips.

“Here we go,” he murmured, gathering his courage.

With a deep breath, he pushed against the stone, and it creaked open with a low rumble, revealing a dark cavern that beckoned him into its depths. The shadows enveloped him as he stepped inside, excitement coursing through him. He was ready to embrace whatever lurked within.

Torches flickered to life along the walls as he descended, the flickering flames casting ominous shapes in the stone corridors. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decay, remnants of old battles fought long ago. Irregular whispers echoed in the background, and for a moment, he felt a twinge of doubt.

Then he remembered the shadows were now his allies. He pressed forward, feeling the energy inside him resonate with the darkness.

Deeper and deeper he went until the passage opened into a grand chamber. Massive stone pillars held the ceiling aloft, their surfaces adorned with intricate carvings of long-forgotten battles. In the center lay a stone altar, surrounded by a circle of bones entangled with weeds—clear signs of past sacrifices.

Just as he started to absorb his surroundings, a low hiss broke the silence. Shadows pooled in the corners of the chamber, forming into grotesque shapes. They were back—the same low-tier Shadows he had faced before, but larger, more malevolent, more aware.

“Showtime,” Jun-seo said, squaring his shoulders.

He summoned the energy within him, focusing on the shadows swirling around. The same exhilarating rush flooded his veins. He felt a connection to the shadows, an understanding that woven itself deeper than simple fear—it was a power he could unleash.

With a fierce battle cry, he launched himself forward. The first Shadow lunged at him, its claws slashing through the air. Jun-seo ducked under its attack, executing a spinning kick that sent it tumbling backward. He followed immediately, channeling energy into another strike.

“Shadow Burst!” he shouted. A wave of dark energy erupted from his palm, engulfing the Shadow in a vortex. It dissipated into mist, leaving behind a faint glow—experience points gained.

But there was no time to celebrate. More Shadows emerged, their snarls echoing like a chorus of torment. They charged as a group, and instead of panicking, Jun-seo embraced the challenge, letting instinct guide him.

He remembered the training—the fundamentals of combat he had practiced for years, the rhythm of punches and kicks, the precision of his movements. With each attack, he channeled more energy, feeling stronger, wilder.

“Come on!” he yelled, a grin breaking across his face as he battered through them. He was gaining momentum, savoring the thrill of adrenaline as shadows fell around him one after the other.

“Your skills are improving,” the voice of the Shadow System chimed within him. “Only through risk will you transcend.”

As he fought, a fluctuating energy pulsed in his chest, beckoning to be unleashed. He glanced back at the altar, feeling an inexplicable pull toward it. With a final flurry of attacks, he dispatched the last of the Shadows and paused, breathless before the altar.

“Why do I feel drawn to this place?” he wondered aloud, taking a tentative step forward.

The altar was etched with symbols that seemed to dance beneath the flickering torchlight. Reaching out, he traced his fingers along the stone, feeling the energy pulse in response.

Suddenly, a resonant voice spoke, echoing from the depths of the chamber. “You seek power. You seek purpose. Sacrifice is required.”

Jun-seo’s heart raced as the ground beneath him trembled. The symbols on the altar radiated light, swirling around him before settling into a blinding orb that levitated above the stone.

“Sacrifice?” he breathed. What did that mean? He hesitated, heart pounding in his chest. Would he have to give up something precious?

“Only by surrendering a part of yourself can you forge a new path,” the voice intoned, growing louder. “Choose wisely, for your decision will shape your future.”

He had a choice to make. He thought of everything he had: his family, his past, his identity as a lesser Hunter.

“Would I have to give up parts of who I am?” he grappled with the thought, uncertain.

But as he stood there, surrounded by the remnants of the battle and the energy of the shadows, he felt a deeper understanding blossom within him. Growth required sacrifice. Fear could breed strength.

“I choose to let go of my fear!” he shouted, voice ringing through the chamber as the orb flared. “I choose to embrace this path, no matter how dark it may seem!”

The orb expanded, engulfing him in a surge of light and energy. Pain lanced through him, but it was a cathartic pain, purging the remnants of his timid self. Memories of doubt, memories of failure, they all melted away, leaving behind only the fire of determination.

As the light faded, he opened his eyes, feeling transformed.
