When a human is born a shadow follows. From the day of their birth until the day of their passing, the shadow would always stay by the persons’ side.
But when a human dies— Does it follow the vessel’s soul to the afterlife? Or does it stay behind like the vessel that remains in the mortal plane…presume the latter if you will.

The shadow, not knowing what to do, only worsens the human's emotions; Leading them into further despair. Making them have foolish thoughts that'll lead to their eventual downfall.
When a shadow takes over a living body, one could say the human's thought process is demented and follows nothing but instinct. Afterall there's no way there could be room for two shadows on one's body.
Does the vessel follow the shadow? or the shadow follows the vessel. When the leader is weak, followers should take the lead.
