Chapter 2 – Nightmares

Chapter 2 – Nightmares

The first night in the forest house was restless. Lily tossed and turned, haunted by the scratching sound outside her window. Each time she closed her eyes, the shadow returned, lurking just beyond her sight. She could almost hear its breath, slow and heavy.

Finally, she drifted into a fitful sleep, only to be awakened by the suffocating darkness pressing against her. In her dreams, the forest was alive, twisted figures crawling on the walls, whispering secrets in voices that echoed from deep within the trees.

“Help us…” they murmured, and each time, she reached out, desperate to grasp something solid, but her hands closed around nothing.

When the morning light finally pierced the gloom, Lily sat up, heart racing. The events of the night clung to her like cobwebs, and she could still hear the whispers in her mind. She stumbled out of bed and padded down the hall, drawn by the scent of coffee and the sound of her parents’ voices.

“Did you sleep okay?” Emily asked, glancing over her shoulder as Lily shuffled into the kitchen.

“Not really,” Lily admitted, pouring herself a glass of water. She noticed James and Olivia already at the table, their heads bent together, sharing a hushed conversation.

“What are you two up to?” Lily asked, trying to sound casual.

“Nothing,” Olivia snapped, but there was an edge to her tone, and Lily could see the glint of something in her sister's eyes—fear, maybe.

As they sat around the table, John attempted to lighten the mood. “Today, we’ll hike the trails! Fresh air will do us all good.” He flashed a smile, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

Lily forced a smile in return, but the thought of the forest made her stomach churn. “Can’t we just stay here?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Don’t be a chicken, Lil,” James teased, ruffling her hair. “We’re going on an adventure!”

Against her better judgment, Lily agreed. The thought of being outside in the sunlight felt better than being cooped up in the house.

They set off along a narrow path, the trees closing in around them. As they walked deeper into the woods, the air grew heavy, and a chill settled over the group. The sunlight barely pierced the canopy, creating a patchwork of light and shadow on the forest floor.

“Look at these!” Olivia called, kneeling beside a tree. Lily stepped closer, her curiosity piqued. There, carved into the bark, were strange symbols—twisted shapes that looked almost like faces. “What do you think they mean?”

“Probably just some kids messing around,” James said, though he looked uneasy.

Lily felt a shiver run down her spine. “I don’t like it,” she whispered, but no one seemed to hear her.

As they continued their hike, the atmosphere grew more oppressive. The sounds of the forest faded, replaced by an eerie silence. Suddenly, Lily realized James was no longer walking beside her.

“James?” she called, panic rising in her chest.

“Where’d he go?” Emily asked, her voice strained.

“I don’t know!” Lily replied, scanning the trees, her heart pounding. “He was just here!”

They called for him, their voices echoing through the woods, but there was no answer. Lily’s chest tightened as shadows shifted between the trees.

After what felt like an eternity, they stumbled upon James. He stood still, staring blankly at the ground, his hands tucked deep into his pockets.

“James!” Olivia rushed to him, her voice laced with relief. “What were you doing?”

“I… I don’t know,” he replied slowly, his eyes glassy. “I just wanted to see… something.”

Lily shivered. He looked different, almost hollow, as if he had seen something she couldn’t understand.

“Let’s head back,” John said, his voice firm. “This isn’t right.”

As they retraced their steps, Lily glanced back at the symbols on the trees, feeling a sense of dread settle over her. The whispers from her nightmares began to creep back into her mind, mingling with the sounds of the forest.

That night, as the family settled into their rooms, Lily lay awake, the scratching noise returning to haunt her. She wanted to call out, to tell her parents what she felt, but fear held her tongue.

Then, just as she was about to drift off again, the scratching intensified, followed by a low whisper that sent chills down her spine. “Help us…”

The dark figure reappeared outside her window, its shape shifting, almost human. Lily pressed her back against the wall, heart racing. “Mom! Dad!” she screamed, her voice trembling.

The door swung open, and John rushed in, looking frazzled. “What is it, Lily?”

“There’s something outside!” she gasped, pointing toward the window.

He peered out, but the darkness held only shadows. “It’s just the trees, sweetheart. You’re imagining things.”

As he left, the whispering grew louder, wrapping around her like a cold blanket. The last thing she heard before surrendering to sleep was a sinister laugh, echoing through the night, as if the forest itself were alive.
