Prologue

Katlynn was having trouble sleeping. It could've been the rain outside, or maybe the swaying of the trees against the house but something was keeping her up.

She hopped out of bed her small 10-year-old self walking past her desk, with pictures from her last birthday party of her family and friends, as she continued on she got to her door turning the handle in the dark house that almost felt alive in the silence.

She looked down the hallway from her room feeling almost like she was looking into the void with how dark it was, the sound of scratching and the whistling of the wind from outside the house causing an eerie feeling to crawl up her spine. Crossing the hall in a rush she sprinted to her parent's room and quietly pushed open the door, seeing the sleeping shapes of her parents in the bed. She moved over to her father Jim after closing the door and softly shook him to wake him up.

Speaking quietly she called out to him. “Daddy wake up… hey Daddy can you please wake up!” Hearing a soft groan from her father she knew he was starting to wake, pushing at him again and repeating her call till finally he spoke to her in a muffled voice into his pillow. “Kat, It's midnight, why are you up?”

Letting out a breath of relief at hearing his voice she answered back. “I’m scared and can’t sleep Daddy the noises are freaking me out and it’s making me scared to close my eyes. What if there’s a monster!”

Groaning Jim started speaking. “There are no mons…” when a loud crash was heard that sounded like glass shattering and wood breaking. Jim jumped to his feet immediately and pushed his daughter behind him as he started moving to the closet to grab his handgun calling out to his wife as he did.

“Janet, wake up! Something just broke a window in the house and I need to go check it out!” Janet, startled awake started to move.

Jim finally came back from the closet with a revolver in hand. Katlynn had seen him cleaning it in the house before after going to the range with his friends. Being taught at a young age about gun safety she watched, following along as he  swung the cylinder out from the catch and quickly loaded it before swinging it back into place and pulling back the hammer.

Janet came around the bed after grabbing her phone and started pushing Katlynn towards their bathroom, not going inside just yet, but waiting by the door just in case. She watched as her husband moved to the door, opening it and moving out of the room to go down the hall to the stairs.

The room was deathly quiet as both mother and daughter listened to the sound of Jim’s footsteps, first going down the hall, then making it stairs. Finally the sound stopped, and eerie silence took its place. The world then came alive with an explosion of noise at the sound of the revolver firing, followed closely behind three more shots  and the running footstep back up the stairs. Keeping pace with Jim's run back up was what sounded like claws on hardwood chasing after him.

As Jim skidded to a stop in front of the door he quickly swung his revolver back up and fired another shot into whatever was chasing after him. Then a creature that had to be 8 feet tall slammed into Jim grabbing him by the shirt with sharp claws and throwing him into the bedroom as Janet started to scream. “Jim!” He slammed into the side wall with the gun flying out of his hand disappearing from sight.

Janet pushed Katlynn into the bathroom as quickly as possible before slamming the door behind her. Locking the door and using her body to hold it closed, while her hands trembling pulled out her phone to call 9-1-1. The sound of tearing and splintering wood could be heard even inside the bathroom, leaving them to believe the monster had forced its way through the frame of the door. The sound of the call dialing was music to their ears as a heavy panting could be heard behind the door that slowly grew closer to the bathroom they were in. A growling chuckle came behind it before a dark rasping voice spoke words that would give them nightmares for years to come.

“Come out, come out wherever you are! I know you're here, I know not far!”

Katlynn shivered as moving deeper into the bathroom as the phone finally stopped its ring for them to hear. “9-1-1 what’s your emergency?” Janet brought the phone quickly to her ear, speaking in a rush as she tried to hold it together. “Please help us! There’s some monster in our home! I think it… I think it may have killed my husband!”

Katlynn seeing her mother start to sob brought back to life as if a spark shot through her. She hurriedly looked around the room blocking out everything else as she looked for something to defend them.

Searching the room she found the normal unhelpful stuff like a scrub brush and toilet plunger, the only thing that seemed somewhat useful was a candle stick holder on the counter. Not finding anything else that could help she grabbed it, pulling it close to her while holding it like a baseball bat. As she turned around only to see her deathly pale mother as a scratching started at the door.

“I hear you in there! Come out, I only want to eat you!” The monster laughed out in its deep gravelly voice before all sound seemed to stop their breaths, the only sound they could hear. Then a massive slam into the door caused it to almost completely fly off its hinges. Janet getting pushed to the floor from the force of the violence. Another slam following quickly behind the first broke  the door off the frame and fell on top of her making her let out an anguished cry from the pain.

Katlynn watched as the monster stepped through the doorway, walking on top of the door, its weight and the doors crushing her pushing her mother into the floor. Screaming out, she ran up to the monster and slammed the candle stick into it as hard as her 10-year-old arms could manage which sadly wasn’t much. The monster looking down at her from where it was hit let out an evil chuckle before grabbing the stick from her and pulling it out of her hand causing her to fall on her butt as it looked at the improvised weapon and let out a dark laugh.

“ Did you think this would hurt me, girl? Sadly for you, that will be your first and last mistake!” It started to growling something deep and menacing, and she could feel in her bones that this was it, as it stalked towards her like a wolf hunting its prey.

Backing up as much as she could she brushed something with her fingers as she did so. Reaching out she grabbed it, hoping and praying that it was anything that could save her life. Only to pull it close and find it was her father's revolver that must have flown in after he was thrown into the bedroom.

She quickly aimed the revolver at the beast trying to remember all her father taught her about shooting. The creature looking down at her gave a predator grin as if to mock her, taking another step on the door a loud snapping sound came from where her mother lay. Looking down the sights she breathed out slowly and squeezed the trigger, the loud boom of the round leaving the chamber, along with the recoil of the gun made her drop the revolver.

But her prayers must have been answered, because even as she was jumping from the noise of it she watched the bullet slam into the monster hitting it in the throat and leaving a gaping wound. Stumbling back it clutched its throat and gurgled, spitting up blood out of its maw before tripping, falling off the door and back into the bedroom falling on the floor as it bled out from the bullet wound.

Katlynn seeing she hit it was still in shock, shaking herself she moved to her mother pushing the door off of her as best she could. Barely making it move at first she was at least able to uncover her mother’s head from beneath it, she then tried to shake her mom awake crying out to her. “Mom! Mom, please! Wake up! Please!” Tears she had been too shocked to release before came down in twin rivers as she did everything she could to get her mom to move.

Janet coughed and spit up a small amount of blood as she started to come to, her head hurt and her foot was in excruciating pain but looking up she could see her daughter and let out a breath of relief before asking the pertinent question. “ Is it gone? what happened?”  “I... I shot it!” her daughter replied, looking up from Janet to the monster behind her. “Thank god you're okay honey!” Janet said, as she crawled up to her knees ignoring the pain in her foot as she hugged her daughter, letting her cry into her chest. Neither of them saw the monster's skin stitching itself back together nor hearing the rasping breath it took as it started to roll over.

They started to notice something was wrong when they heard a deep and powerful bass growl that shook them to their very cores. Janet pulled her daughter close to her chest and slowly turned her head, only to see the beast fully for the first time. As it was getting back on its pawed feet she noticed the clawed hands and feet, along with the dark brown fur that covered its body, with a muzzled face and eyes that were a sickly yellow she finally had an idea of what it was, a werewolf. “That hurt you bitch!” It growled out as it started to stalk towards them, its claws flexing thru the floor. Janet knowing this was the end she held her daughter close moving her out of the werewolf’s sight hoping to keep her safe with her body until the end as she heard it getting closer she closed her eyes.

And waited. And waited. When the blow she was waiting for never struck Janet slowly turned her head back around, seeing it standing tall but motionless confused her then she watched as a thin line of red appeared around its throat. The red grew and started to drip down its fur as a large man that radiated danger in dark military fatigues walked into her sight from the werewolves' side. He had a dark cloth mask covering his mouth with a hood over his head that covered the rest of his face with only his eyes; a dark ocean blue that could only be seen from the barely reflected light the room gave off.

The man walked up to the frozen beast, pulling a knife out of his tactical vest with one hand he brought his other up showing a silver like thread connected from his hand to the beast. Pulling, the man dragged the beast to the side, toppling before driving his knife home into the werewolf's head then twisting the knife and pulling it off him. The cloaked figure cleaned his blade on the creature's fur before standing, Janet finally letting the breath out she had been holding called out. “Is it dead..?”

Turning and looking at them Janet could see hard blue eyes that looked to be inspecting every inch of her body as the man looked them over. Going from the mother to the daughter he spoke while pulling out a dark suppressed handgun pointing it at the werewolf. “It’s dead.” Then firing twice into its chest and then a third in its head, he then started walking towards her husband on the side. Janet let out a shuddering breath at the pronouncement, watching as the man walked out the doorway to her husband and kneeled down beside him. “Is my husband okay? The monster hit him but we haven't been able to check and see if he's alright.” Janet asked.

Janet let go of her daughter, slowly stumbling her way up to her feet with her daughter's help. She limped out the door to see the covered man beside Jim, looking over every inch of him scrutinizing his wound from where the beast hit him. Pulling up his shirt then looking around his neck before checking under the shorts of her husband then he finally stood up to say. “He’ll live.”

“Help me get to your father please Kat.” Janet asked Katlynn as she held onto her daughter, starting to limp towards him. “Yes ma’am.” Katylnn replied, holding her mother close to her. “What was that thing? I know what it looked like but that can't be possible can it?” Janet asked as she finally made it to her husband, the man backing away from them as he touched his ear, seeming to listen to something before starting to speak into what must be a microphone.

“ Copy, Wraith here Rogue has been eliminated. Upstairs there are two injured civilians one will require a litter there is also a child with them Over.” The man then turned back to Janet finally seeming to reply to her question with a nonanswer. “What it is is dead ma'am. I know this is hard to understand but some people will come up soon and help.”

Not happy with the answer but feeling that it was the best she would get Janet accepted it for now. Holding on to her husband and feeling his heart beating she let out a breath of relief thankful that her husband should be okay, before turning to the man as he started  walking out the door going into the hallway. Unsure what to do from now she was surprised when she felt a rustling beside her, as her daughter let go of her and chased after the man before she could reach out and stop her, calling out her name as she disappeared after him.

As Katlynn caught up to the man that had saved them she called out to him. “Sir! Sir Please! I need to say thank you! Thank you for stopping that monster! Thank you for saving us!” The man stopped and turned back to look at her, his hard blue eyes softening ever so slightly as he looked down at her to reply. “I’m just happy I made it in time to help and I'm sorry you had to go through all this. Some nice people should be here soon that will help your mom and dad, why don’t you go back upstairs to wait for them okay?”

She watched as he turned back around and walked out the front door where an array of bright red and blue lights and large dark trucks waited for the man.
