Meet Sev

Darkness enveloped her. She thought she could hear a voice calling out, but it was muffled. Her head throbbed as she started to try and move, but her body wouldn't cooperate.

"Seven? Seven, can you hear me? Wake up."

Seven? Who was Seven?

Her eyes opened slowly. There was a blob in front of her that might be a person. She blinked her eyes to focus, and the blob slowly turned into a person that sighed in relief.

"Hey, glad you are with us. How are you feeling?"

Her voice croaked out. "Sore... Headache..."

"That will all fade." The man spoke as he held her upright. She finally was able to make out his features. He had tan skin, brown eyes, and scruffy brown hair with a long beard to match. There seemed to be a sadness in his eyes that she noticed.

The man put on a fake smile as he continued to speak. "Now, here is a question that might prove difficult. What is your name?"

She thought for a moment, but nothing came to her. Her eyes widened in panic. She didn't know her name. She didn't know who she was, where she came from, or anything before she woke up. Her breathing turned into hyperventilation.

The man turned her face to look him in the eyes. "Hey, don't panic. You aren't alone. We will help you figure things out. My name is Matty, welcome to the Family."

Sev woke up inside her little house made from an abandoned, metal, shipping container. She didn't dream often, yet whenever she dreamed it was the same one over and over again. A dream of the day she was found by Matty.

She stretched as she forced herself to actually wake up and get out of bed. She changed her clothes and walked outside.

Her home was one of a collection of abandoned shipping containers at this old port. In the middle sat a small fire pit where Matty sat cooking breakfast. She walked to one of the small piers and reached her hands into the water to wash her face.

She sat down next to the fire as Matty handed her a small plate of eggs and sausage for breakfast.

"Good morning, Sev. How did you sleep?" He said happily. He acted like the dad of the small group of people who lived in this long, forgotten port, and that was what made Sev feel so comfortable here.

She sighed as she stared at her food. "Same dream again."

Matty looked at her with worry. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'll be fine. I just can't believe it's been a year since that day."

Matty chuckled. "No kidding, but you are a full member of our family now. Just don't forget us when you finally move away from here."

Sev laughed as Matty's comment caused the memory of her dream to flee for now. "I don't know when that will be, but I'll try my best."

Sev took a bite of her breakfast, and smiled up at Matty. The food was delicious, as usual. Which was uncommon for a group that lived on the streets, but Matty always made sure they ate well.

The group had ways of earning money. So, even though they were all homeless, they were able to survive quite well. There were homes set aside for them to live in, but Matty preferred to stay away from the free housing. Sev wasn't sure why, but she trusted him enough to know he had his reasons. The rest of the group that lived with them had all been saved in one way or another by Matty, so they stayed with him until they saved up enough to buy their own place.
