Chapter 1 Act 2 : Mace and Racket Wielder

Chapter 1 Act 2 : Mace and Racket Wielder

Dragavar West Gate, September 28 2012.

This time only one dragon appeared that roared in front of the fallen Dracos. But the dragon was clearly larger than the previous four small dragons. The girl read the name as Great Draco. This dragon was stronger with a greater amount of HP of 2000 points.

"Water Ball!!!" Vestalia used the magic over and over again, but the damage was not too great at only 100 points. The dragon's HP only decreased a little. There was a problem with this monster. From the tutorial explanation, Water Ball Magic used Mana Points—abbreviated as MP— which limited the use of its magic. When her MP reached zero or less than MP cost then she couldn't use skills anymore and could only use transparent magic balls with weaker damage until her MP regenerated every few seconds.

The dragon counterattacked with its fire blast with 120 points of damage. If this continued to happen, the result would be obvious. Vestalia's HP would hit zero and her character would be in a collapsed state or knocked out.

"Pendragon, what should I do?" She cried desperately. There was no reply from Pendragon with his flat expression. Although the tutorial mentioned Item usage, there were no items that she could eat or drink from the inventory.

"Pendragon!!!" she kept calling out but there was no answer. Vestalia's tone sounded panicked even though her real voice was not. What should she do? She had to call for help. Her HP was already getting low at 17. One last attack would make her knocked out.

Great Draco's body was suddenly attacked from behind and made it turn around while stepping over the fallen Dracos. There was another creature now fighting against the dragon. This time a light blue-skinned Dragonic figure appeared, who looked much younger than Pendragon. His posture even looked like a teenager. His clothes were also similar to the white Magician uniform accompanied by a blue vest similar to his vest, with blue pants. Vestalia tried to read the name written on the blue dragon's figure.

His name was Velocity. The blue dragon was holding a large hammer with both hands. The girl realized that it was a type of Mace weapon that she hadn't chosen before. Unlike Vestalia who fought with magic balls, Velocity fought with the Melee or martial arts style. The blue dragon continued to deal 100 points of damage for every hit on his hammer. Vestalia asked herself about his name, which meant the unit of speed.

There was something different about Velocity's combat, his HP was reduced less even when hit by Great Draco's attacks but his HP also increased periodically. The girl observed her skill chart and realized the difference in magic used. The blue dragon used the Heal skill, which could increase his or his ally's HP. “Are you okay?" asked Velocity, while turning to Vestalia and shouting the keyword Heal in his voice. "I've healed you, let's go defeat this monster."

Vestalia observed that her HP had been restored and her MP had been regenerated after seconds passed, so she could use Water Ball several more times. Both of them attacked Great Draco with their respective fighting styles, and after a few minutes, Great Draco finally fell.

"Good job!!!" exclaimed Pendragon. "The arrival of this second student is just in time. At least according to the plan."

"Plan?" snapped Velocity in a defiant tone. "I was just following a tutorial at the academy and a few minutes later after teleporting, a girl, I mean a cat in distress appeared!"

"Oh, that was arranged. Great Draco is not designed to be fought alone for your level," Pendragon said loudly. "Well, the warm-up is over. Velocity, Vestalia, we're going to get into our field study. You will become my assistants on the Nightmare Extermination Quest."

The latest instructions from the tutorial appeared on Vestalia's monitor. The girl had to read thoroughly what was written on the monitor, from the GPS of their next destination, an explanation of the level-up of the character being played, and a further explanation of the features of Mobius.

"I've sent the GPS and other tutorials through Mobius," said the still-loud Pendragon. "Now you must walk to the destination and arrive before six in the evening."

"Six o'clock?" asked Vestalia, observing that it was still three pm from the digital clock on her desk.

"More precisely one hour from now. You should look at the time displayed on Mobius." Velocity added.

He's right, the time on Mobius, or rather the monitor was at 5 pm. Vestalia had to get used to the time difference between the virtual world and the real world.

Pendragon began to explain again. "The place called Deep Inferno is not too far from here. But the important point is that you should take advantage of the next one hour to practice with combat and learn the tutorial."

The author's content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

"Er, you're not accompanying us for the next one hour?" asked Velocity.

"No, there are times when field studies need to be accompanied by an instructor or not," replied Pendragon. "From the beginning, you will be trained to be independent. I will provide tutorials if needed. If not, then it's my job to keep an eye on you and only intervene if you run into trouble."

"Hmm...." Velocity only mumbled. He seemed to have given up on asking.

"Well, now I will return to Dragavar city. Both of you better practice well." Pendragon began to take Mobius out of his pocket. "If you slack off, your field study grade will be low. Mobius can record your activity history during the time I leave."

"Then what about Nightmare Extermination Quest you mentioned?" asked Velocity.

"You'll be fighting a Nightmare with me, which is a slightly harder monster at six," Pendragon replied. Velocity simply nodded in reply. "Make sure you level up and allocate your stats and skills after I return."

Vestalia just gawked at Pendragon's explanation and orders. She flinched as it seemed that Velocity could understand the context of what Pendragon was talking about.

"Take care of yourself. See you in an hour. Activate Mobius, Respawn!" exclaimed Pendragon who disappeared from view on the monitor in an instant. A few seconds later, Velocity mimicked Pendragon's words. At the same time, the weapons held by the two of them also disappeared.

"It’s not working. Makes sense, we haven't unlocked the feature yet," said Velocity in a disappointed tone.

"What are you just saying?" asked Vestalia, curious about Velocity's actions.

"One of the keywords that can be used for Mobius. It pays 200 Sepilith to teleport back to the place we saved the checkpoint," Velocity replied, sounding clear about what that answer meant to her. However, she had to remember that Sepilith was the currency in this virtual world.

"So, we'll be able to respawn like Pendragon?" asked Vestalia, though the answer was predictable.

"That's right, but we have to do a job called Quest, which is typically a commission. For this context, it's called a field study."

"Oh, okay. Errr...." Vestalia was confused for a moment to ask further." Then what happened to our weapons?"

"Stored or uploaded back into Mobius. All the equipment we use to fight, items, and skills will be downloaded on battle. That's one of the functions of Mobius."

Vestalia thought about the dragon boy's answer as if he had memorized the terms in this virtual world and had graduated as a Savior. She then asked again, "You are... a player like me, I mean human right?"

"Of course I'm human, am I reincarnated as a dragon or something?" growled an annoyed Velocity. The dragon boy asked him back, "You know how to log out from the game, right?"

"Hoeeeeee!!! I-it's...." Vestalia sounded panicked. "Err, from what I read in the tutorial, use the ESC key. Ah! There is!!!"

Velocity laughed. "Why are you panicking like that? We don't switch bodies and gonna die with zero HP like in an anime."

"Geez, you're satirizing the anime about that game, aren't you?" Vestalia's voice sounded annoyed.

"So, you know that anime. Okay, okay, it was just a joke." Velocity waved a hand.

Velocity began to change the topic. "By the way, are you a newbie player?"

"It's not like the game has only been released for a few days, so everyone is new to playing this game?"

"It's not like that. Newbie means you're a complete amateur and new to playing this kind of game. But I should have already deduced that from your words and actions."

"Oh, if you say so, indeed I'm still a Newbie," Vestalia confirmed.

"Veteran players or those who are used to playing games like this should be able to take optimal strategies. For example, learn the Heal skill for at least one point for the Magician Class even though the tutorial tells you to take Water Ball or other elemental magic. So, you won't fall quickly in the battle against Great Draco earlier because you can heal your HP."

"Hoeee, really?" exclaimed Vestalia in amazement. It was true what Velocity said, she shouldn't just follow what she was told in the tutorial.

"Now, we don't want to run out of time with questions and answers, so let's continue the tutorial!" said Velocity. The dragon boy seemed to be taking over the leadership role for the two of them. "We should get acquainted and create a party or group."

"Get acquainted?" said Vestalia in surprise. She was suddenly nervous.

"Yes. Acquainted," Velocity repeated. "My name is Velocity, usually called Velo. I'm named after one kind of quantity in Physics. The subject with my favourite teacher in middle school. I'm currently a second-year high school student, 17 years old. Nice to meet you."

Vestalia was relieved to be able to follow the format of the introduction. "Errr... my name is Vestalia, I took this name from what I found on the internet, if I'm not mistaken... from the ancient mythology of Rome. I'm a third-year junior high school student, 15 years old. Nice to meet you, too."

Velocity pulled out a handshake icon above his character's head, and his hand tried to reach hers, she responded by pressing it, and they shook hands. He looked at Velocity's character who crouched down to balance Vestalia's much dwarfed character's body. She looked at the icons called emoticons on the bottom left screen of her monitor.

"You may have more questions about the real-world background and the basics of the game," Velocity said. "But we don't have much time, I'll explain the next tutorial because there's a lot I already know. Let's get going."

Velocity began walking westward, followed closely by Vestalia. The girl thought to herself, she was playing this game to try something new in her life. She wanted to make new friends. Friends who didn't just know her name like at her school. The first thing she got was the presence of a male player who accompanied her.
