[Ch. 1] Rude Awakening

[Ch. 1] Rude Awakening

Emptiness. Peaceful nothingness. A boy experiences nothing but these things. He drifts in a dreamlike state, unaware of his own existence. It is a blissful experience. If he were conscious, he would never want it to end.

"Wake up."

His mind stirs for a moment. Who was that? Oh well, nothing important probably.

"James! Wake up!"

The boy's mind is aware again for a moment. James? I know someone named James. Oh well, I'm sure James is  alright.

"You want to play that game? Fine. But you won't like this."

'Wait, what? What won't I like?' The boy thinks. Suddenly, he is overridden with agony. The boy sits up in with a start. A dull feeling of pain pulls at his stomach. He groans. Wires are attached loosely to his temples. Several tubes stick out from his arms, feeding him mysterious substances from bags hanging from a pole. He looks down at the thin paper gown he is wearing, then around at his surroundings. A hospital?

"Was I in a coma?" the boy thinks. He remembers suddenly the blissful nothingness he had just been torn from. Eager to return to it, he begins to lay back down. Suddenly, he feels a blast of cool air rush through his body.

"Aah!" he gasps, immediately more alert. He sits up once more, this time with such force that the tubes rip from his arms and hang meekly from the poles. Where had that blast of air come from?

He looks around and finds no air vents or AC machines pointed his way.

"What the..." he mutters to himself. After a few moments of sitting quietly, he decides that he won't be able to go back to sleep, and swings his legs over the side of the bed.
