Myth 4: Weaver of Myths

Myth 4: Weaver of Myths

As he entered the library he could not see Joshua at all. As he walked towards his own private reading room he could hear rustling of papers from within. Deciding to play a little prank on the older man he quietly snuck into the room.

There he saw the older man trying to organize a group of papers and scrolls on the desk. So focused at what he was doing, it was so easy for Akaro to sneak up on him.

“Good morning Joshua.”  Akaro simply said already beside the librarian.

Joshua looked as if he had a heart attack as various papers flew out of his hand. Akaro put up his hands in apology after inwardly laughing a bit. He then started to pick up the fallen papers.

“Akaro-nim. Why did you sneak up on me like that?!”

Holding his heart he sighed deeply.

“Surprises aside, quickly come here. Put that bag on the table and open it. Then take out what's in it.”

Akaro found the bag and placed it on the table. He then unbuckled the latches keeping the flap closed and pulled out a large black tablet with writing he did not recognize at all on it.

“That is an ancient artifact inscribed by one of world’s greatest scholar and historians. It was even said he was one of the hero gods that overthrew the Darkness Goddess Calypso. ”

Joshua who caught his breath explained.

“Akaro-nim, I have spent all my life trying to solve this tablet but I’m unable to surpass the wall that is in front of me on my own. Would you please help me in translating it?”

A message popped up.

Hero God Tablet

The old scholar Joshua has brought to you an ancient artifact he spent his whole life trying to unlock its secrets. As he was getting older he did not have much family and did not want all his research to be squandered. Due to your relationship with him he has deemed you worthy to continue his life goal.

Difficulty: B

Quest requirement:

Failed if you decline

“I have already agreed to help you yesterday.”

Joshua with a smile on his face continued. “I will leave you to it. Use all my research and if you manage to figure this out I’ll be sure to reward you greatly for this. I would have asked the other person that frequents this location but he has been rather cold to me and doesn’t seem to be the type that would help others.”

Akaro heard the last comment whispered to him. He remembered the other male and also remembered the feeling that he was someone strong. Nodding at Joshua he looked at the quest window for the first time.

'I can accept ten of these quests at a time.'

As he was still learning he didn't really understand that quests usually lead to experience and awards. The only game he can use for reference was an RPG that was just shy of being released twenty years ago. So he just took it as a request from an elderly man too old to continue his work.

'I'll be sure to complete his work.'

Akaro first started going through the work of the old man and what he has done so far. Although it only took him an hour to read through it he needed to spend time trying to understand it. The stone tablet had many cracks and some of the lines looked like they eroded through time. In order for him not to damage the tablet he decided to make a copy. Grabbing a piece of parchment he started to trace the outline of the stone. Due to his memory he can pretty much replicate the image while drawing it with ease. After drawing it he set the tablet aside in a safe place before he began his work.

He first wanted to find out what was the proper direction to translate the image. As he was not familiar with the writing itself he started sifting through the pages in Joshua's research.

Three hours passed by and he was able to determine the proper way to start working on the lines of text. According to the notes, he found certain issues with how Joshua was trying to decipher the stone originally. The tablet was rectangular but it was was not written in regular format. It was written similar to Japanese novels from top to bottom. Also the text was meant to be read from furthest right and towards the left. Akaro only found this out when he was able to translate the word "the" which should be the most common three letter words in sentences according to his experience.

Akaro's stomach growled. It was time to eat and as if on queue Joshua came in.

"Ah you have been working hard. I have made some tea for us to drink. Let us go to the front and eat there. I would hate to spill on your progress."

Joshua and Akaro sat at the front desk. He had a tea set waiting while Akaro took out his bento. This time Joshua placed a plate and a set of cutlery in front of him. As the food was being divided between the two Joshua poured tea for the both of them.

"It is always good to relax the mind with a good cup of tea."

Akaro tasting the bitter taste of the tea drank it slowly. This time in his bento they gave a seafood deluxe set.

"How is it going?" Joshua inquired.

"I was able to find the proper layout to begin translating. Thanks to your work I was able to decipher the proper way to read the artifact."

Smiling Joshua responded, "Already made this much progress, how long do you estimate before you will have the full translation."

Thinking of all the information he has already and now that he can figure out how to read the tablet Akaro answered honestly.

"Six to seven hours should be enough to do it."

Joshua paled. 'Over fifty years of work and it only took him a day...'

"It is all thanks to your dedication, if you had figured out the layout you would have not needed me."

Akaro tried to encourage the man. It must have been effective as the man smirked.

"Of course. I am too old to continue this work and so I asked you to finish it Akaro-nim."

Akaro then felt a cold glare from across the room. His senses picking up a bit of killing intent. He quickly looked at the direction of the glare and found the one male already standing up and leaving towards the door.

The redhead did not understand the animosity that was directed at him. He did not understand the amount of weeks that player waited and read through books to find a hidden quest. He did not understand that because Joshua requested for Akaro’s help in a span of one day that the one player was now holding a grudge against Akaro. He will soon come to butt heads with this player in the future but not yet.

As Akaro watched the player leave he shook his head and started eating again. As the meals disappeared and he sat quietly. He ignored the message of what stat boost he received after eating as it would not matter. He would have to not train today to finish deciphering this artifact.

'Well there is lots of time with the way this world works.'

***

“Where is my rival?!” Chul-Moo was agitated as he was looking for Akaro to spar with.

***

Akaro sneezed as he started heading back to the room to continue his work. He then started using the word he had already translated and started matching the letters to the same symbol found on the tablet. After marking each symbol with either 't', 'h', or 'e' he looked at it. It still was quite a lot of letters to figure out.

He then opened the ancient scrolls he was going to read the other day and tried to see if he can find any written patterns in relation to what he translated. He noticed the scroll used old English so there were a lot of words like thou, and Ye. Using the likelihood of this replicating in the tablet he started doing guess work. Sometimes he would get the right ones and other times he would have to scratch an hour's worth of work as the letters did not match. He made notes on which letters did not match the corresponding symbol.

Although the work Akaro was performing a task that regular players would avoid, he enjoyed it. He was playing a game and he got to do what he loved while in it. He enjoyed it even more as the time reading in the game gave the opportunity to acquire vast amount of information and stories that he has never heard before and all within a small amount of time in real life. This excited him even more as he really wanted to read what this tablet had to say.

More and more symbols had matching letters attached to them and Akaro was getting faster. As more letter were found the ability to structure the sentences and finding the missing words became easier. Even the symbols that look faded or were damaged by cracks was getting translated. Once he put in the last letter he saw the tablet at the corner of the table started glowing. Picking it up a pop up message appeared.

You have completed the quest Secrets of the Arpen tablet.

Take the tablet and your translation to Joshua to finish the quest.

Walking towards Joshua, he brought both items to him.

It had been just over seven hours since they ate lunch and Joshua was astonished at this young man’s achievement. Taking the translation and the tablet he began to read.

"To whomever deciphered this stone I commend thee. Thou art a fellow with a kindred spirit. To thee I offer no gold, nor weapon as those will disappear through the ravages of time. I bequeath unto thee my immortal soul. Thou may be wondering how can I give thee anything as I no longer have live in this world. Are thee not reading this stone? My knowledge and my art is what I leave to thee. I have witnessed the rise and fall of my brethren Hero Gods. My written works have been tampered with and the world thy knows may be false. This stone was thine first stepping stone to uncover the truth. Thine life will now be blessed and cursed with the destiny of translating my words. Search this world for more pieces of my soul, and more truths will be revealed to thee.. Create thine own legends, write thine own myths, continue my life, my one and only disciple. Do not trust the words of others and seek the truth thyself. The Gods are not as innocent as they seem. " - Myth Weaver Belthazar of the six Hero Gods. There was a faded out symbol on the tablet that also redrew in the translation.

As Joshua finished reading the translation he had to sit back as Akaro started to glow in a golden light.

A pop up message came up.

“Akaro-nim, what happened? Are you okay? That seemed to be a class change but it was the first time I saw anyone glow golden like that.”

The older gentleman recovered from being surprised and asked the youth in concern for the young man’s health.

This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.

“I think I’m alright. I have a class called Legendary Myth Weaver and my race is now Ancient Human.”

Joshua’s eyes almost bulged out. “Legendary Myth Weaver and also became a new race… I’ve heard of people changing into a different type of human but not one to the original type. The class itself is already amazing as that is the same class as Belthazar. You must be blessed by the Gods.”

‘Actually quite the opposite…’

Akaro thought as he was considered faithless but did not say it aloud. Instead his face contorted in confusion as he wasn’t really interested in this type of class but as he was given no choice to decline it, he decided to just deal with it and get the ninja class as one of his three sub classes. The race type change still surprised him and decided to ask Joshua as the elder seemed familiar with it.

“What’s the difference between ancient human and the other types?” Akaro started.

“Think of it this way, over the years the types emerged between humans as aptitude to certain vocations were very apparent. Ancient humans are what would be considered the origin of our species before newer generations later the evolution of man split into three different types. I’m not too sure what changes have occurred but you would have a better understanding of that than I. You are the first case that I have come across anyway.” Joshua explained.

“I do see that all of attributes have increased quite a bit but I lost the adaptability passive and any classes I’ve chosen are permanent.” Akaro sighed at the end.

“Hmm I could see that could be a problem later down the road when you find more things to do. You’ll have to be careful on what you choose for your other class. Regardless of the restrictions, you will probably benefit more with a class that a Hero God used.” Joshua began before continuing with a more serious face, “I’ve decided. I need to report our findings to the Central City’s Scholar’s guild. They will give us both quite a bit of recognition for this achievement.”

The older man grinned as he said the last line and started to gather items that was on the table and placing it in his bag.

Another message popped up just as Joshua finished.

With the translation of the secret stone tablet of the Hero God Belthazar, your name will be announced to the world once Joshua has given his report to the Scholar Guild in Central City. With this your name  will be well known throughout the continents.

Reputation will increase up 2000

You will also get a title.

Will you accept this achievement?

Most players will be elated when a message like this would pop up but Akaro truly felt that he didn’t deserve it. He may have helped Joshua in uncovering this secret but a lot of the research was done before hand. He decided to tell Joshua how he felt about it.

“Joshua I can’t accept my name on your work. Just let them know that you translated this on your own. You deserve all the credit as all I did is help rearrange it.” Akaro tried to persuade using his new skill.

You have declined.

“Do not be so humble. Even with all the research and time I have put into this, I would have never found the truth without your skills of deduction. You’ll gain fame and be allowed to get access to many other ancient artifacts throughout this country and even in other countries. You can become a scholar of the guild and enjoy life just reading and finding new discoveries in ancient texts. Why would you want to decline this type of opportunity?”

Joshua was astonished that this young man would not take such a prestigious opportunity.

“Then how about you sign a contract with me? You will place this achievement under your name and you will grant me access to these libraries when I need to as your apprentice. I do not need the extra attention as I want to travel this world and I do not have the power to refuse certain kingdoms if they try to acquire me by force.”

The last comment was not a lie. Being a measly level ten and obtaining this much reputation will cause problems for Akaro. He wanted to enjoy himself and felt that having the extra attention would put him in troublesome situations.

This time he used the contract skill and a piece of parchment appeared before him when he decided to use the skill. The only problem now was he didn’t have a pen to write out the conditions.

Joshua pondered and smiled before saying, “I can accept that condition. But I’m going to give you something of equal worth. It’s a very important item and since I do not have children of my own, it’s only proper to give it to my apprentice.”

Joshua took out a black box from his pocket. He then handed it over to Akaro with a look full of sincerity.

Akaro opened the box to find a very ornate pen. With the same symbol of Belthazar on it like what he also saw on the tablet. It was a scroll with a sword pierced through it, engraved in gold at the base of the pen. The color of the pen seemed to go from black to silver depending on where the light hit it. The tip was not metal but a red crystal that gave a dim light.

“This pen is no ordinary pen. Using mana instead of ink it can write on just about everything. This has been an heirloom of my family for years. You see one of the reasons I have this stone tablet is that it was passed down to me from my family. I was the only one who has tried to solve it and now because of you I am the first one to be able to read it. I have no other family and I am getting old. Please accept this and the key to this library. I hand over the ownership to you.”

A pop up opened up once more.

Belthazar's pen

This pen was the heirloom of Joshua's family. A special red crystal was used as the tip and the pen casing was crafted with a mixture of orichalchum and mithril and enchanted to be indestructible. This pen does not use ink but uses mana to write. The color of the ink will be determined by the users thoughts.

Does not lose any durability

Inscribe level will affect the abilities of the pen.

Uses 10 mana per second when in use.

This cannot be dropped or taken.

Myth Weaver skills will improve 10% faster.

Can be equipped under the special equipment slot that is unlocked at level 50.

When equipped:

Mana increase by 2000

All stats added by 10 points

Art increased extra 200 points

Speech increased extra 200 points

Restriction need to have Inscribe at intermediate level to equip

Reading the effects of the pen, Akaro decided that he needed to work on increasing his proficiency up with these skills as much as he can. The special equipment slots can be unlocked after every fiftieth level according to what Akaro has viewed. At max players can equip up to five special equipment.

He started with inscribe and started writing with the pen the words needed. He needed to write quickly as he watched his mana get drained. Twenty mana per second for the inscribe skill and the pens effects as well. Finishing the contract with just enough mana to spare he handed it over to Joshua.

Once Joshua signed the contract more pop up messages displayed.

Level Up: Inscribe (Beginner Level 2 25%)

Success rate increased to 7.5%

Speech +10

Level Up: Contract ( Beginner level 3 20%)

Speech + 10

Thanks to the pen it made it easier for him to level up his skills and because Joshua agreed the first time he tried to persuade it seemed to have cancel the cost to use the skill. Contract and inscribe actually increased his speech some more.

‘So succeeding is very important. I can’t keep using the persuade skill if I run out of stats in the speech section. But it’s not a system point but actual stats that get used up. I wonder if there are any other classes like this where stats get affected.’

As Akaro was still trying to understand the new skills, Joshua took out a key and another piece of parchment.

“Akaro this is the deed for the library. You will be part owners with me as you are now my apprentice. Your job is to maintain this place as I’ll be heading out to Central City. You cannot deny this as you are my apprentice.” Joshua handed over the other two items.

Akaro understood the importance of how his skills increase in experience. For most of his skills was verbal which meant he needed to be a lot more vocal than he’s used to. This was a challenge he was willing to accept. The contract level though surprised him. It leveled up twice even with the help of the pen.

'It must mean that depending on the conditions that are in place the proficiency will increase. Probably also depending on what is agreed upon. The more advantage to me the more I get out of proficiency. '

The young man made a mental note on how he can exploit this skill in the future. Then his face contorted to an amused expression as a memory popped into his head.

'Funny how I am now the one giving contracts instead of just signing them.'

“Now I must go to central and it will be a long carriage ride. Please take care and if you need any help please contact me in the Central continent. I’ll leave this device which will give you a way to contact me.” Joshua took out a purple gem like stone that he placed on top of the desks.

“You just need to write a message and place it on this stone. It will then transport the message out to me. This is how I’ll send you messages as well.  I am probably going to be staying at the famous Freedom of Heaven Research Institute and compare notes with other colleagues in the same field. Once again I thank you Akaro-nim.”

Seeing the older man off Akaro changed the time the Library opens to early morning and closes at lunch. He wasn't sure if anyone will come to this library as most NPC’s and players alike go to the more popular First Four Swords Library. Nonetheless he felt he had a responsibility to the books and he will start reading through them as he passes the time.

As it was evening Akaro decided to sneak into the training grounds once more. This time the instructor seemed to a bit more vigilant. Akaro knew he could not do the same things so this time he decided to go from the rooftops. He climbed a tree and jumped to a building about four buildings away. From the roof he started to jump between buildings nimbly and with such quickness no sound could be heard with each transition. Landing on the last building he waited until the instructor greeted or talked to another player before jumping onto one of the scarecrows and then flipping in a fashionable way and landing in a crouch.

“Did he jump from the building?”

“It as if he think he's some sort of ninja.”

“He's just a show off.”

The players who noticed him made comments but Akaro ignored them. The one person he wanted to avoid was the instructor.

After a few minutes Ezekiel clicked his tongue after seeing the redhead had once again stealthily avoided him.

Akaro had already got up from his previous position and picked up two wooden swords and continued his training. This time he wanted to practice another sword form his sword master of a teacher has taught him.

The stance he took was quite strange. Akaro put the two blades behind him and stood there focusing on where to strike. This was important as it was a skilled based on Iai. It was a quick draw technique that required a lot of focus and skill to utilize.

As the swords stayed behind his back he pictured the scarecrow in his mind and aimed for the section between the head and the body. In a move quicker than the eye can see he struck the scarecrow and put his swords back into the same position. Due to the speed the only markings on the wooden swords were the scratches from the straw it had just sliced. As the scarecrow head fell it went grey before another flash occurred and a new scarecrow replaced it.

'Another high casting skill...'

Akaro saw that the sword techniques that his grandfather taught him since he was young will be very helpful once he can start hunting and gaining more experience.

He also noticed that learning these new skills increased his proficiency quite a bit but noticed it was less than the last time. Akaro opened up his skill window and reread his skills.

'All unrelated class skills get 75% less experience until I pick up some sort of warrior or fighting class.Thankfully the swordsman title helps decrease that a bit.'

Akaro sighed as he did not want a warrior class. He wanted something along the lines of assassin or if there was a class called ninja he would make it in one of his subclasses in a heartbeat. He decided to just wait on getting a combat class for now and continue his training even if it would mean it would take him much longer now that he’s in charge of a library as well.

Although the real world time showed one in the morning, he didn’t need to sleep thanks to the machine he was in. He got to enjoy the game a lot more and continued to train his game body until it was time for him to wake up in real life.

During his training, Chul-Moo actually showed up and sparred with him a little. Again Akaro did not lose in any of their fights but Chul-Moo was always getting closer. Akaro didn’t want to admit it but he was gaining more comfortable with the game thanks to the hangul user. His grandfather would be glad that he found himself a worthy rival to help push him toward perfecting his art.

***

Waking up at five in the morning Myung-Ki was greeted by his grandfather as he was about to leave for his morning jog.

“Honourable grandfather I apologize for yesterday. I got caught up in my amazement of the game to properly thank you.”

Smacked in the head again. Myung-Ki squinted in slight pain.

“If you continue calling me that I will not hesitate to hit you.”

Believing in using discipline for the strangest of reasons Myung-Dae finished scolding Myung-Ki.

“Playing the game is fine. I feel more comfortable that you are enjoying yourself. I even saw you smile, so that is all the thanks I need.”

Myung-Ki smiled again for his grandfather.

“Gramps, you are a writer right?”

“Oh ho... we must speak in hushed voices now. If your mother found out you are interested in writing she would blame me for corrupting you.”

Looking at his grandfather with a perplex looked he continued to enquire.

“In the game I obtained a class called Legendary Myth Weaver. Myth is another word for story right?” Myung-Ki asked.

“My oh my. Do not show your mother your class. Anything unique would make you a target for her occupation. Myths were one of the first form of storytelling like in the stories of ancient Greek gods and heroes.” With an amused smile Myung-Dae explained.

“I know you do not play the game gramps but is it okay for me to ask your opinion from time to time as it seems to be a class that requires a lot of knowledge in literary work.” Myung-Ki continued.

Myung-Ki practically said the magic words as huge smile was plastered on his grandfather's face.

“Hufufu. Of course my beloved child. I will do my best to support you. Remember we have to keep this secret from Juhee. IF she ever found out about you writing. Well she won't be able to stop you but my ears would fall off from her complaining.”

Nodding in agreement Myung-Ki left to start his morning routine.

As if her ears were burning Juhee woke up and just missed the exchange between grandson and grandfather.

“Abeoji. You stayed up again writing didn't you!”

“I sleep during the day so it is fine. This old man has a young heart.”

“You are setting a bad example for Myung-Ki. If he picks up your behaviour you will not hear the end of it!”

Myung-Dae gave an infuriating smirk before he replied to his daughter.

“I'm well prepared.”

Juhee glared at her father before going to the kitchen to start their breakfast.
