Prologue

It’s barely been three days since the riots and Emma was back at work. Of course it wasn’t possible without the nice and mysterious guys in management who provided every office worker with a security escort. The only time Emma felt like Princess Dianna. Traveling in an armored car with a pair of blokes half the size of Greenland, carrying enough arsenal of firepower to protect an Israeli border town.

The second floor office was on Code Yellow, just a step over Code Orange. Yellow meant that anyone not living with a family household is required to be in office. Lousy government rules.

Emma flashed her Yellow ID card at the scanner and entered the stainless steel box. The Elevator was gentle unlike the personality of the two bodyguards she left in the lobby. The two were about as stoic as a statue during the apocalypse.

The familiar tune chirped from the speakers, reminding her to remain upbeat while the city recovers from tearing itself a new one. Maybe more government work would occupy my mind.

The doors opened and the office looked as empty as Chernobyl. Only two other people walked around the cubicle area, giving Emma a clear view of the two management glass offices.

Per any normal day Igor sat in his office and Roland’s briefcase lie atop his desk. Probably outside smoking another cigar. She looked back at Igor who stood and tapped on his watch. The ex-KGB agent looked half the size of Sweden compared to the muscle downstairs. Igor needed his paperwork copied, so Emma nodded her head and grabbed the paperwork from her desk. Then she walked to the small copy room.

Emma opened the top of the copy machine and found a cover letter. Addressed to one of the most secure places in the world: The Pentagon.

A phone number listed looked familiar yet she couldn’t place it. Scanning through the cover letter and found the initials of someone she calls a friend.

“What?” she whispered. A gasp startled her. Emma looked up and found the traitor. His long face and lethargic steps revealed his sleepless night. Half a decade of work erased in six hours. The two locked eyes and as his heart stopped. “I trusted you, you bastard.”
