Chapter 1 Bad luck

Chapter 1 Bad luck

At the next intersection, there was yet another red light. This was the third red light that Ye Lingfei had encountered in just ten minutes of driving. He cursed silently, thinking how unlucky he was. If he had known the traffic in Wanghai City was this congested, he would have left for work earlier.

He raised his hand to look at his watch. It was already a quarter past eight. Even if he rushed to Ya Group headquarters now, he would still be late. Ye Lingfei found this amusing. Being late on his first day at work—he wondered if this might be a record for Ya Group.

He also wondered what his "boss" would think of him, a "nepotism hire" who was late on his first day. No one would guess that this refined and fair face had struck fear and gratitude into the hearts of many high-ranking officers and armed organizations on the battlefield.

The thought of living a different kind of life was quite nice. While Ye Lingfei was imagining the good life of an office worker, he suddenly heard a "bang" and his body jerked forward. Thankfully, he had fastened his seatbelt, so he wasn’t injured. His heart skipped a beat as he thought, “No way, this is a brand new Chevrolet I just bought. Could I be this unlucky to have it crashed on its first day out?”

He hurried out of the car and walked to the back. His eyebrows knitted together as he saw the rear of his white Chevrolet dented. Feeling a wave of bad luck, he thought about how he had only been in Wanghai City for less than a week after coming from London, and had just bought this Chevrolet two days ago, intending to drive it to work today. And now it was hit.

Just as he was fuming, the driver of the car that hit him, a girl about twenty-five or twenty-six, got out and immediately accused him, “Do you even know how to drive?”

Ye Lingfei looked up and saw a girl in a knee-length white dress with long hair draped over her shoulders. Her skin was fair and delicate, her face flawless but slightly angry, with almond-shaped eyes staring straight at him.

"An eighty. If her chest were bigger, she’d be a ninety," thought Ye Lingfei, who had seen many beauties. However, he was also annoyed, thinking how she could accuse him when she was the one who hit his car.

“Miss, please take a good look. My car was parked here. You hit my car. Don’t think you can accuse me just because you have long legs. I’m a very principled man and won’t be swayed by your looks.”

No man had ever spoken to Bai Qingtian like that. Hearing this, she got even angrier and snapped, “Are you calling me a ‘miss’?”

“Wrong, I was just addressing you. But if you want to accept that title, I don’t mind being your customer. Miss, how much for a night?” Ye Lingfei deliberately squinted, leering at her chest.

Bai Qingtian’s face turned red and then green, her fists clenched tightly, and her chest heaved with anger. “You pervert! Just wait, I’m calling the police on you!” She turned to get her phone from her car to call the police. At that moment, a police car approached and stopped. A beautiful female police officer got out of the car.

Seeing the female officer, Bai Qingtian’s face lit up with excitement. This officer was her good friend, Zhou Xinming. Seeing her, Bai Qingtian felt relieved and said coldly, “Pervert, just wait.”

“Wow, this female officer has a great figure too, especially those long legs,” Ye Lingfei thought as he eyed Zhou Xinming. She had loose hair and fair skin. She wore a white t-shirt that accentuated her impressive chest and tight jeans that hugged her round hips and long legs.

Zhou Xinming greeted from afar, “Qingtian, why aren’t you at work? What are you doing here?”

“I’m being harassed by a pervert,” Bai Qingtian pointed at Ye Lingfei, her arm like a scallion, and said indignantly, “It’s him. He crashed into my car and insulted me.”

Hearing this, Zhou Xinming turned to Ye Lingfei, her captivating eyes scanning him with a hint of a disdainful smile. She patted Bai Qingtian’s shoulder and said, “Leave it to me.” She then walked over to Ye Lingfei, lifted her right leg, and placed it on the hood of his car in a very suggestive manner.

“Handsome, how do you want to handle this? Will you apologize to this lady, or should I take you to the police station?”

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

Ye Lingfei laughed, his eyes wandering over Zhou Xinming’s chest. “Officer, I don’t understand what you’re saying. But if you want to date me, I can consider it. How about we get a room tonight?”

Hearing Ye Lingfei’s blatant flirtation, Zhou Xinming didn’t get angry but laughed instead. She leaned closer, her sweet breath wafting into Ye Lingfei’s nose. “Sure, no problem. But first, you need to apologize to this lady and come to the station to make a statement for sexual harassment. After that, I might consider your suggestion.”

“Sexual harassment? Officer, you’ve got it wrong. It was your friend who crashed into my car and insulted me. If a statement is needed, it should be from her. Besides, I have things to do. Today is my first day at work. How about this, if she apologizes to me and compensates me with twenty thousand, we can call it a day. As for you and me, we can discuss it later. Although you’re a beauty, I’m not interested in women who throw themselves at me.” Ye Lingfei lightly pushed Zhou Xinming’s leg off his car hood and said, “Nice figure, but your butt is a bit small. I suggest you work out more to tone it up.”

“You little punk, are you messing with me?” Even Zhou Xinming, who was confident in her looks, couldn’t take Ye Lingfei’s jabs about her figure. She prided herself on her legs and beautiful buttocks, which made her a darling among her colleagues. Many officers viewed her as their ideal partner. Using her looks often helped her in cases, where suspects would easily confess. But today, she met someone who outmatched her in this game, leaving her beauty trap ineffective and herself mocked.

Zhou Xinming sneered, “You’ve got quite the mouth on you.” She then looked at the white Chevrolet and said, “I’m investigating a car theft case. The owner reported a similar white Chevrolet being stolen. You’re highly suspicious. Even if you’re not the thief, you might be fencing stolen goods. I need to investigate you thoroughly. Zhao, Li, get out of the car and take this suspect to the station.”

“Officer, this is an abuse of power. I didn’t expect such a beautiful police officer to frame people. But I’m a good citizen and will cooperate with the police. However, I have a suggestion,” said Ye Lingfei, glancing again at Zhou Xinming’s chest, “Next time, don’t wear a black bra under a white shirt.”

“Hmph, I’ll wear what I like. What’s it to you?” Zhou Xinming retorted, but she noted to herself that her father would scold her if he found out.

“Name,” Zhou Xinming demanded, taking out a pen to make a report.

Ye Lingfei sat across from her, while Bai Qingtian sat at a nearby table, sipping coffee. Ye Lingfei didn’t have such treatment; there wasn’t even a glass of water in front of him. When Zhou Xinming asked his name, Ye Lingfei answered honestly, “Ye Lingfei.”

“Age.”

“Thirty-one.”

“Gender,” Zhou Xinming asked absentmindedly, head down.

“Different from yours.”

Hearing this, Zhou Xinming finally looked up angrily. “Answer properly, or I’ll detain you for twenty-four hours and question you later.”

Ye Lingfei leaned back, crossing his legs. “Detain me for twenty-four hours? For what? Oh, I remember now, it was your friend who crashed into my car, and you’re abusing your power.”

“Hmph, I suspect you’re a car thief. That alone justifies detaining you for twenty-four hours,” Zhou Xinming retorted.

“Evidence? You’re accusing me of being a car thief without proof. I bought my car legally, with all the proper documentation. You’re slandering me. For this, I could file a complaint against you,” Ye Lingfei raised his eyebrows provocatively, “No wonder your chest is so big.”

“You…” Zhou Xinming was rendered speechless and flushed with anger. She understood the insult that her big chest meant she had no brains. But she had no evidence to link Ye Lingfei to the car theft. Frustrated, she asked, “Zhao, have you found any records on this guy?”

“Yes, found it,” Zhao quickly responded. Normally, he never saw Zhou Xinming this worked up. Today was an eye-opener. Zhou Xinming scanned the computer screen quickly.

Ye Lingfei chuckled internally, knowing most of his records were fabricated. Even if she checked, she wouldn’t find anything.

Sure enough, Zhou Xinming soon returned to her seat, glaring at Ye Lingfei. “Ye Lingfei, why did you come back from London, and what did you do abroad for six years?”

“Returning to serve my country. Is it wrong for a ‘returning sea turtle’ to serveAs for what I did abroad for six years, do I really need to answer that? I was working and making money."

Zhou Xinming realized that continuing to ask wouldn’t get her anywhere. Initially, she just wanted to vent her frustration and catch Ye Lingfei on something to give him a hard time, but he seemed unfazed, not scared of her at all. She was left with no choice but to ask angrily, “If everything was fine in London, why come back to Wanghai City?”

“I told you, I want to come back and serve my country. No matter how well I did abroad, I should come back. After all, I’m Chinese, and I really miss my homeland.”

Hearing this, Zhou Xinming was both angry and amused. “You want to serve your country? Come on, nobody would believe that. It’s better you’re back here; at least you won’t embarrass us Chinese over there.”

Ye Lingfei waved his hand dismissively, pretending not to care. Zhou Xinming’s mood lifted a bit, but seeing his attitude reignited her anger. She slammed her hand on the table and scolded, “Sit up straight and stop slouching. I’m not done asking you yet!”

“Officer, can you please hurry up? Today’s my first day at work, and I don’t want to spend the whole day at the police station.” Ye Lingfei glanced at his watch. “It’s already 10:30; I’m two and a half hours late!”

“Work? Hmph, you’re not getting off that easy until you explain yourself.” Zhou Xinming was determined to get to the bottom of it. She picked up a teacup from the table, took a sip, and slowly asked, “Which company are you working for, and what’s your job?”

“Yah Group.” Ye Lingfei noticed Zhou Xinming’s attitude; she clearly didn’t want him to go to work. Since he didn’t care about the job anyway, he played along with her, looking relaxed. “I’m the marketing department manager, but this is my first day, and I haven’t even seen the company yet. How about you, Officer, give me a ride to work?”

Upon hearing “Yah Group,” Bai Qingtian, who had been silent, frowned. She knew Yah Group was a well-known company in Wanghai City, dealing in the production and sale of machinery, with engines as their core product. She couldn’t understand why they would hire a rogue as a marketing manager. She thought she should talk to her dad about reducing orders from Yah Group.

Just as Zhou Xinming was about to continue her questioning, her phone rang. She answered it, and soon a glimmer of excitement appeared on her face. After hanging up, she immediately stood up and called out to the others, “We’ve found the hideout of those car thieves! The captain wants us to head over immediately!”

“Wait, what about me?” Just as Zhou Xinming was about to leave, Ye Lingfei couldn’t help but ask, “You’re not planning to make me sit here all day, are you?”

“Hmph, today I’m in a good mood, so I’ll let you go. But our business isn’t over yet; be ready because I’ll come looking for you anytime.”

“Great, I’m really having the worst luck today.” Ye Lingfei stood up, rubbed his sore backside, stretched, and cheerfully said to Bai Qingtian, who was about to leave the police station, “Hey, it’s already late. How about we grab lunch and talk about life afterward?”

“Get lost!” Bai Qingtian shot him a fierce glare, turned around, and walked straight out.
