Chapter 9: Bad news

As the second week at Elara Academy came to a close, Lily found herself increasingly disheartened by her inability to awaken her magical spark. While she was surrounded by students from all backgrounds who had unlocked their abilities, Lily was left feeling like an outsider in this world of magic. Despite her best efforts, she could not help but compare herself to others, causing her self-doubt to grow.

Walking through the academy's corridors, she caught snippets of conversations between students, boasting about their latest magical achievements or discussing their newfound abilities. Even the mundane-born students, who had initially struggled as much as she had, now seemed to be flourishing. It was clear that Lily was falling behind, and the realization was beginning to weigh heavily on her.

One evening, after yet another frustrating attempt to awaken her spark, Lily found herself venting her worries to Ivy in their shared dormitory.

"I just don't understand," Lily sighed, her voice tinged with disappointment. "It's been two weeks, and I still can't do it. What if I never manage to awaken my spark?"

Ivy offered her a reassuring smile, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Lily, you can't give up. Remember, everyone learns at their own pace. And who knows? Maybe you have a hidden talent that's just waiting for the right moment to reveal itself."

Lily managed a weak smile in response, grateful for Ivy's unwavering support. But deep down, she couldn't shake the gnawing fear that perhaps she wasn't cut out for the magical world after all.

The following day, after another unsuccessful attempt to ignite her spark during a practical magic class, Lily found herself walking alone in the academy's courtyard. The air was crisp and cool, the autumn leaves creating a colorful tapestry on the ground. It was a perfect place for quiet reflection, and Lily needed to clear her mind.

As she wandered, she noticed Adrian leaning against one of the ancient trees, his eyes closed in concentration. His brow furrowed, and a small flame flickered to life in the palm of his hand. Just as quickly, the flame vanished, and Adrian opened his eyes, a satisfied expression on his face.

He glanced over and spotted Lily, his gaze cool and aloof. "Still struggling, I see," he commented, a hint of condescension in his tone.

Lily bristled at his remark but tried to keep her composure. "Yes," she admitted reluctantly. "I can't seem to awaken my spark, no matter how hard I try."

Adrian considered her for a moment, his eyes narrowing. "Perhaps you should speak to the faculty about your difficulties," he suggested, his voice devoid of warmth. "They might have some insights that could help you."

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

While Lily didn't particularly appreciate Adrian's unsympathetic demeanor, she had to admit that he might be right. Perhaps seeking guidance from the faculty could offer her some much-needed assistance in overcoming her struggles. With a resigned nod, she thanked Adrian for his advice and decided to follow his suggestion.

With newfound determination, Lily made her way to Professor Ainsworth's office. As the magical theory professor, he was renowned for his vast knowledge and understanding of the intricate workings of magic. If anyone could help her, it would be him.

Upon entering the office, Lily found Professor Ainsworth hunched over a large tome, his eyes scanning the pages with a focused intensity. He looked up at her approach and offered a warm, inviting smile.

"Ah, Miss Lily," he greeted her. "What brings you here today?"

Taking a deep breath, Lily explained her struggles with awakening her magical spark and asked if he had any insights that could help her. The professor's expression turned thoughtful, and he gestured for her to take a seat.

"There are several reasons one might struggle with awakening their spark," he began, his voice measured and calm. "The first reason might be a mental block. Magic is deeply tied to our emotions and thoughts. If a person is plagued by self-doubt or fear, it can prevent them from accessing their magical potential. To overcome this, one must learn to confront and release these negative emotions."

Lily pondered his words, considering whether her own self-doubt might be the cause of her struggles. It was certainly a possibility, but she felt a nagging sense that there might be more to it.

"The second reason," Professor Ainsworth continued, "is that the individual may possess a latent magical ability that requires a unique trigger or circumstance to awaken. In such cases, traditional methods of awakening one's spark may prove ineffective. Discovering this unique trigger often requires a great deal of introspection and exploration of one's magical heritage."

This possibility intrigued Lily, and she couldn't help but wonder if there was some hidden aspect of her magical lineage that she had yet to uncover.

Finally, the professor leaned back in his chair, his expression turning somber. "The third explanation, though rarer, is that a person may have an inherently limited access to magic. Their connection to the magical energies that permeate our world might be so faint that forming a sphere of energy proves impossible."

As he spoke these words, Lily felt her heart sink. The prospect of having such a limited magical potential was a difficult truth to face. But she knew that, regardless of the cause of her struggles, she had to find a way to overcome them.

"I understand, Professor," she said quietly, determination shining in her eyes. "Thank you for your help. I'll do my best to explore these possibilities and find the answer."

As Lily stood to leave, Professor Ainsworth's eyes seemed to glimmer with a sudden inspiration. "Wait, Miss Lily," he said, holding up a hand to halt her departure. "I might have an idea that could help you. Please, come back tomorrow morning, and we can discuss it further."

Lily's face brightened with a mixture of hope and curiosity. "Of course, Professor. I'll be here. Thank you." With that, she left his office, her heart filled with renewed determination and the promise of a possible solution to her struggles.
