For Ray Smith, this day couldn’t possibly get any worse. It’s like the whole world is conspiring against him. What would the world have against a small-time software engineer like him?
“Haaaaaaaaa.”
It all started when his girlfriend of 2 years came to him this morning before he could even have breakfast.
“We’re finished. Don’t bother coming back to the apartment tonight.”
She tossed him and all his belongings to the curb, without even a rhyme or reason. He tried to shake off the pain, he loaded up his meager belongings into his shitty car and went into work.
After getting to work he started his daily routine, trying to withhold some degree of normalcy. He did his stretches, got his coffee, and sat down to start typing away at the neverending bugs. After a few minutes of sweet peace Ray saw his boss making a beeline towards him. Ray felt a sinking feeling in his stomach
“Ray, please come see me in my office, we need to talk.”
The sinking feeling got worse, what could his boss possibly want for him in his office. He was a good worker, he got everything done on time, he never tried to stick his neck out too much. His mind was racing as he pulled open the door to his boss's office. His boss gestured for him to take a seat in one of the expensive leather seats in front of the desk. After an awkward moment of Ray getting himself situated in the chair his boss started talking.
“Ray,it's time our company and you went on our separate paths. You have been doing just enough to keep your job now for 5 years and have never shown any desire to move your career forward. This company is for go-getters and trendsetters, we can’t have someone like you disgracing our workplace., please have your desk cleared out within the hour.”
Ray felt his mouth dry up, it was like all his worse nightmares were coming to pass. He shamefully shuffled back to his desk and started cleaning it off. Even though he worked there for 5 years there wasn’t much there so it only took him a few minutes.
He left the building with his head hung low, staring down at the box with his few work items. He slowly plodded his way to his parking spot, pondering what to do next, but as he got close he noticed one of his car windows was shattered.

“Oh no, there’s no way.”
He raced to the car and peered inside. All his belongings, they were gone. His PC, game consoles and clothes, all stolen. At this point he is completely numb inside, no GF, no home, no job and no belongings. He took out his smartphone and checked his bank account. A paltry sum of $200 greeted him. He needed to regroup and find out what to do, so he decided to go to the nearest coffee shop, grab a calming cup of coffee and decide what to do next.
The drive was cold due to the broken window, the chill was a constant reminder of how bad his day was going. He finally pulled into the coffee shop and went and got in line. Even in his distracted state he noticed that the guy in front of him was acting a bit sketchy, a hood pulled over his head and just generally moving around all shifty like. Ray tries to ignore it and tell himself that he's seeing things. The line moves ahead slowly but eventually the guy in front of him gets to the front of the line.
“Hi, welcome to The Coffee Bean, what can I get you today?”
he reaches into his waist and pulls out a pistol.
“Nobody moves! Put the money in the bag and everything will be over with quickly.”
The whole world seems to stop, the people in the store all freeze, some put their hands over their heads or get on the ground.
Ray froze on the spot and couldn’t help but think to himself.
“So here I am having the worst day of my life in the middle of an active robbery, please tell me how this could get any worse?”
The cashier was showing money into the bag, crying hysterically when suddenly Ray noticed a flash of movement out of the corner of his eyes. A big burly guy rushes over from the gunman's blindspot, tackles the gunman and starts wrestling him on the ground.
“Should I help him?”
But before he can make a decision a loud BANG fills his ears and a sharp burning sensation forms in his belly.
He looks down in horror to see blood pouring from a large hole in his stomach area..
“So this is it, this is how today gets worse, huh.”
He went to take a step forward but the blood under his feet caused him to slip and fall on his back. Ray was vaguely aware of the gunman running out the door and people surrounding him.
“Someone call an ambulance!”
“There's too much blood, is there a doctor here?”
Their faces start to get blurry, and the hot sensation in his stomach starts to become ice cold.
“So this is it?”
He didn’t know why but his final thoughts turned to his tabletop gaming group.
“I wonder whether they were going to continue playing without me. I’ll never get to play my character, Akil, ever again.”
The world started to go dark, as Ray laid there in a growing pool of his own blood.
“Today really was the worst day of my life.”
