March 24th 2014

Vanesa had just gotten out of school, and her first thought was to go to Johnny and her’s usual meeting spot; on the cliff by the ocean. They were not dating, nor did Vanesa want to be, she happily had a crush on Johnny’s best friend Herold. But she had been friends with johnny for so long that it was easy to talk to him, so that is why they hung out of the time. They would meet at the cliff every day after school. “So why isn’t he here today?” Vanesa thought to herself waiting at the bottom of the cliff, phone in hand still open to the last four messages sent to johnny. She lifted up to send another one ‘you are always here by now, how come you aren’t here.’ When she put the phone down, she saw someone walking out of the forest, it wasn’t johnny, because he had a very distinct walk about him, this man had a limp. As she watched him he stumbled and fell over. She ran to help this man, but when she got close he looked up at her with terrified eyes. “Is there something wrong sir?” Vanesa asked gently. “Where am I?” The mysterious man looked crazy when he said this. “Um, you are on the coast, close to New York.” Vanesa said pointing to the mess of houses off in the distance. “I...don’t understand.” Said the limping man as he tried to get up off the ground to no avail. Vanesa shook her head and helped the man up, at which point they started to walk back to town, the man’s arm wrapped around Vanesa’s neck for support. It was at this point that Vanesa got a good look at the man and what he was wearing. All his clothes were pretty torn, however she thought she could make out some old fashion boots, and felt a shirt made out of a weird coarse material. Deciding that she could evaluate what he was doing here after she got him to the town clinic she picked up the pace.

Everyone stared at her when she walked through the town with him on her arm, he couldn’t have been much older than her, 18, and he was visibly in a lot of pain. Blood dripped steadily down his leg as he looked around in pain and amazement. As they arrived at the clinic and Vanesa took him inside she prepared to leave, but was stopped by the man who said “Can you please stay, I don’t know where I am and you seem to be a good person.” “I should really get home to my mom, She will be worrying about me.” Vanesa responded pulling her arm away from where he grabbed her. “Well, will you be back tomorrow?” He asked. “I have school tomorrow, so no I will not be back, besides you can go home once your legs is fixed.”

“I don’t know where home is, I don’t even know where home is, everything seems like it is different, what is the date?”

“March 24th, why?”

“March 24th and what year?” He said wincing as the nurse started to stitch up the large gash on his leg.

“2014?” Vanesa said as almost a question, wondering how a person wouldn’t be able to know the year.

“Well that can’t be, it was just 1945 last year wasn’t it?” He looked a little broken and confused.

There was a long pause before Vanesa got up went to leave, but then turned around to ask a final question, “What’s your name?”

Pleased that he finally knew something for certain, the man said “Hilford Berry II!” He then beamed at her as she walked apprehensively out the door.
