Chapter 3: Testing

Chapter 3: Testing

The hologram fades to nothingness as the message finishes.

"Each of my appendages has a specific tool meant for construction or repair work. Each tool may be used for combat but only if you are in immediate danger." The drone says in a robotic, monotone voice.

"Where did you come from and why are you helping him?" Ted asks the drone

"I have been sent to assist Jacob in survival. My sudden change in alliance was a curious anomaly." The drone says in a robotic voice.

"We need a name for you. We cant just call you drone!" I said determined to make up a name.

Me and Ted spend hours sitting down brainstorming names.

"Lets call him..... Meka!" I exclaim to ted

"Eh, ok. Not like I had a better name so, Meka it is!" ted says

"Ok drone! Your name is now Meka!" I said standing up.

"Registering name: Meka" the drone says

"Unit designation Meka accepted." Meka says.

"Thank god. It felt weird having to call you "Drone" for the time I have known you." I said to Meka.

"Hey Ted, Should we go scavenge for materials? I know this is a giant scrapyard but thats about all i know about this place. There has to be some broken drones/robots in this place." I ask

"But first, Can you tell me about the machine factions in this place?" I inquire

"Yeah sure, sit. I will teach you about the local machine factions that pose an immediate threat." Ted replies.

Ted pulls out two metal stools and puts them around a table in the corner of the room.

Me and Ted sit down on the metal stools and begin to talk about the machine factions.

"First of all, Each faction has its own "Mother" which is a giant mechanical construct which creates more machines. These are EXTREMELY dangerous!" Ted says.

"In order for us to get machines, Meka here has to repair, and rewire broken robots that are littered around this scrapyard." Ted says

This novel is published on a different platform. Support the original author by finding the official source.

"The first faction, The insectoids. Their machines take on the shape of an ant or insect.

The second faction, The critters. These are not dangerous and are useful to harvest for scrap and parts. And finally, the beasts. The beasts are the most dangerous faction out of all of them. Their machines are big, bulky, and dumb. To beat them, you have to either overpower them or oversmart them. The second option is extremely easy if they are in small numbers. each faction has a sort of "hivemind" which connects all their thoughts and experiences." Ted finishes explaining out of breath.

"We should find out more about what Meka can do!" I exclaim to Ted.

"Yeah, we need to know what he can do before we do anything else." Ted replies.

"Actually, How do you get food? I havent seen any plants OR animals anywhere!" I ask curiously.

"You dont see any of those because the machines hunt the animals and destroy all the plants in the main area. Plants and animals are prevalent in the alleys of the scrapyard and rodents and alike actually thrive here." Ted replies

"Hey Meka, what can you do?" I ask inquisitively

"I have the capability to repair most damaged machines except for ones that are too complicated. As I repair more machines, I will gain knowledge on how to repair those machines.

I also have a chance to develop a personality the more I work for you. I also have the ability to make more copies of myself, which takes up more materials than repairing a broken machine." Meka replies in his usual cold, lifeless voice.

"Great! Lets go look for broken machines to repair so we can begin our empire!" I say enthusiastically

Me and Ted get up from our stools and walk up to the metal door. The hinges creak as the door opens. 'Must be because it's from a scrapyard's metal.' I think to myself.

As we open the door, the sun shines so bright it puts even the brightest star to shame.

"Ugh, whats with this bright sun?" I ask confused and slightly in pain

"Don't worry, it's only because you have been inside for 4 days!" Ted exclaims.

"Meka, come with us." I command

I hear the repeated noise of hydraulics extending and retracting as Meka begins to follow us.

We walk out of the door and we see mountains of giant piles of scrap, with half working machines littering the scrap piles. The sound of gears scraping and hydraulics moving fill the air as the half working machines try to escape from the scrap piles.

"Meka, search for the most functional machine you can find and bring it back to base. But make sure to disable it so it doesn't attemt to kill us." I command

"Command recieved. Retrieving specified machine" Meka says with a slightly less lifeless voice.

Meka scuttles off and climbs up one of the scrap piles flawlessly. Moments after Meka climbed the scrap pile, Meka climbs back down with a two legged construct.

"Machine retrieved. Machine identified as Redhorn" Meka said

"Hm, a Redhorn. Those arent seen much as they have little use besides carrying small weight and scouting. Though another machine will help us." Ted says
