Wright was a seasoned veteran of the city's criminal underworld and knew better than anyone how to stay alive. He had built a network of allies and contacts over the years and was well known for his cunning and intelligence. He had seen the rise and fall of many gangs, and he had always managed to stay one step ahead of the law.
But Wright was also a man with a conscience. He knew that the life he was leading was dangerous and violent, and he often wondered if there was a better way. He had thought about leaving the city, and starting a new life somewhere far away, but he always found himself drawn back to the excitement and danger of the criminal world.
One day, Wright received a message from one of his contacts. The message was simple but cryptic: "Meet me at the usual place. I have something you need to see." Wright was intrigued. He had learned over the years never to ignore these messages, and he knew that his contact wouldn't have sent it unless it was necessary.
Wright made his way to the rendezvous point, a small alleyway near the heart of the city. He was greeted by a figure he didn't recognize, a young man with an air of confidence about him.
"Wright, I've been looking for you," the young man said, a smile spreading across his face.
Wright frowned. He was always cautious when dealing with new people, especially in the criminal underworld. "Who are you?" he asked. "And what do you want?"
The man chuckled. "I'm Danny, Danny took a deep breath. "I need to find a way to enhance my abilities," he said. "But I don't have the knowledge or resources to do it on my own. I need someone who knows the city and who can help me."
Wright was intrigued. He had been looking to build his scavenger team. His niece Jenny was out looking for more people as well.
Wright nodded. "Okay," he said, a slow smile spreading across his face. "I'll help you."
Danny let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you," he said a genuine smile on his face. "I knew I could count on you."
Wright shrugged. "I'm not doing this for you," he said. "I'm doing it for myself. But we can help each other, and together, we can accomplish anything."
Danny and Wright were making their way back to their camp when they heard footsteps closing in on them. Danny quickly unsheathed his knife, while Wright was ready to draw his gun.
Suddenly, a group of scavengers emerged from the shadows, brandishing weapons. They were the same group that Danny had stolen supplies from, and they were here to reclaim what was rightfully theirs.
"Friends of yours kid?" Wright said with a razed eyebrow.
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
"Uh no, not quite," Danny said with a frown.
"Hand over the goods, kid," one of the scavengers growled. "You have no right to take what doesn't belong to you."
Danny stood his ground, a defiant look in his eyes. "I did what I had to do to survive. You would have done the same in my position."
The scavengers didn't seem to care about Danny's justification, and they advanced on the two men, weapons at the ready. Wright stepped in front of Danny, prepared to shoot if necessary.
As the two sides squared off, a tense silence fell over the area. Neither side wanted to make the first move, as they both knew that once the fighting started, there would be no turning back.
Suddenly, a shot echoed through the air, and one of the scavengers crumpled to the ground, a bullet hole in his chest. The remaining scavengers looked around in confusion, trying to figure out where the shot had come from.
Danny and Wright took the chance to make a run for it, they were greeted by the sound of automatic gunfire. Danny immediately hit the ground, but Wright cautiously peered around the corner to see who was firing. To his surprise, he saw a young girl, no older than Danny, standing amidst a group of scavengers with a large gun in her hand.
Wright quickly ran towards the girl, shouting for Danny to follow. As they approached, the girl turned to face them, a smirk on her face.
Wright's eyes widened in recognition. "Jenny!
Danny looked back and forth between the two of them, completely bewildered.
Jenny rolled her eyes and handed Wright one of the scavengers' guns. "Come on, Uncle Wright. We've got to get out of here."
Wright smiled gratefully at his niece and then turned to Danny. "Danny, I'd like you to meet Jenny. Jenny, this is Danny."
Danny hesitantly took Jenny's offered hand, still in shock. "Nice to meet you," he said softly.
"Likewise," Jenny replied, before turning to lead the way out of the alley.
As they made their way through the city, Wright filled Danny in on Jenny's background. She was the daughter of his stepbrother Dave a back alley arms dealer and had grown up around guns and violence. But despite her rough exterior, Wright was proud of the young woman she had become.
As they walked, Danny couldn't help but be impressed by Jenny's skills. She moved with a confidence and grace that belied her age, and her aim with a gun was nothing short of amazing.
As they reached the city outskirts, Wright turned to Jenny with a smile. "Thanks for coming to our rescue, Jenny. I don't know what we would have done without you."
Jenny just shrugged, a small smile on her face. "That's what family is for, Uncle Wright."
"Good job back there, Jenny," he said, a hint of pride in his voice. "But we need to be more careful. We don't want to attract too much attention."
Jenny nodded, a serious expression on her face. "I know, Uncle Wright. I was just trying to protect us."
Danny watched the two of them, fascinated by their dynamic. He couldn't believe how lucky he was to have found them. They were the first people in a long time who had shown him kindness and generosity, and he was determined to repay them for their help.
As they approached the camp, Danny couldn't help but feel nervous. He had never been a part of a scavenger team before, and he wasn't sure how he would fit in. But as they entered the camp, he was greeted by friendly faces, and he could tell that he was welcome there.
Wright, Jenny, and Danny spent the next few days planning their next scavenging mission. They decided to hit a nearby military base, where they were sure to find valuable supplies. As they worked, Danny couldn't help but feel grateful for his new companions. He knew that with their help, he could make it in this harsh new world.
And so, the three of them set out on their next adventure, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Together, they were a force to be reckoned with, and they were determined to survive no matter what.
