The List.
My name’s Jay Brogan and I was fifteen years old when I got hit by a car and send flying into the air.
It hurt pretty bad.
The worst part about it was, I wasn’t even jaywalking, or even distracted by a phone or something. The red sports car just whipped around a UPS truck parked at the corner and nailed me while I was walking across the crosswalk.
The driver of the red car looked pretty surprised, I imagine I looked pretty terrified.
I ended up in my own body, unbroken, in a fantasy world that had gone through a war between the Hero and the Demon Lord a few years back which ended up wreaking the whole world with the magical equivalent of a nuclear winter that poisoned the world with something called Miasma.
Neither one of them survived by the way.
After that if the magic poison didn’t kill you, or the creatures mutated and driven to mindless rages by it didn’t either, then the lack of sunlight to grow crops did you in by starvation.
Or by someone who was starving.
Which is where I came in as I began to wander through a half dead forest full of sickly plants until I found the remains of an old farm and something jumped me.
Or rather someone.
Iethliopy was a red skinned devil girl with black horns, wings, and claws. She was too young at the time to have her third eye yet, and since she was half starved to the point of being desperate enough to attack a human for food it was likely she wasn’t that far from starving the rest of the way.
Of course, she didn't jump me because she was planning on comping down on Brogan sushi, but because I had been on the way home from the grocery store when I got brought to this world, along with all of my groceries.
I had arrived near the ruins of an old farm she had taken shelter in. At first, she had huddled in terror at the burst of Divine magic that brought me here straight from my accident, then she smelled the oranges that had burst open when the car caught the bag they were in along with my left side.
Once I realized she was just after the food, I ended up feeding her the first of three baloney sandwiches, making her eat them slowly by miming that eating too fast would make her sick. After that, I had the most devoted follower, later girlfriend, later wife, that you could ask for.
Since I didn’t understand a word she was saying, I just nodded my head when she knelt before me, crying and swearing her eternal devotion.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
Which was a pretty good deal for some smooshed up oranges she ate whole, along with the sandwiches made with the bargain store brand of bread and the cheap mostly chicken brand of baloney.
We camped out in the ruins and she must have gotten up during the night to take care of some personal business because the next day there was a cluster of orange trees straining to all grow in the same spot and I had a computer prompt floating in the air in front of me asking if I wanted to spread the trees out evenly in the field.
It seemed that I was in an RPG world and had been given the Farmer class.
I had been summoned to save that world, not by fighting evil or anything like that, in fact, it hadn't been me that had been targeted to be summoned at all.
It was my groceries, I had just been brought along since I was handy and they needed someone to plant things.
The oranges, apples, bananas, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and potatoes all grew super fast on the farm without any need for fertilizer, at least not in the now holy soil around where I had arrived at. And the seeds, bulbs, and eyes were not only protected from the Miasma that was poisoning all the other plant life on that world, but they also cleaned the soil and the air all around them where they grew.
Even though I was living in a fantasy world, I never planned on gathering a Harem, but things happened between me Iethliopy, and our child was born much more healthy than any other kid had been since the war, and with unlimited potential in how high she could advance in whatever class she ended up with. Soruss, a priest who wandered through every now and then said it wasn't only the seeds of the plants I had brought that had limitless potential but my own “Seed”.
Which I thought sounded gross, but a lot of other girls wanted healthy children with good futures as well. Getting close to me by swearing themselves into my service was seen as a good way of getting in on a good thing.
And it wasn't just women swearing to me, a lot of people wandered in just because they were hungry and I had food. Some tried to take my place from me, in fact, new bad guys kept showing up over and over again to try to take what I had, while others swore to become my followers and protected the place under Iethliopy’s command.
Turns out she was one of the Demon Lord's many daughters and had a pretty broad education before things fell apart.
A lot of the people who showed up early on turned out to be young women, girls had become less valued in those troubled times and ended up kicked out to fend for themselves at a young age. Only a few of them outright threw themselves at me, most of them were so young I ended up treating them more like little sisters, or even daughters.
Of course, as they got old, it turned out that some of them never thought of themselves that way.
The Nobility of the Demon race considered the number of wives they had a sign of their power, and Iethliopy considered it her duty to pick out the best and most useful for me. I think she also missed being surrounded by her sisters.
So after the first five wives, I stopped objecting and just got out of their way. Every now and then I was told that I would be getting married that afternoon to a new woman the wives had found that they considered worthy of me, and them, so I would just agree and kept spending my days leveling up my class and the nights trying to be kind and caring to whoever showed up at my bedroom door.
After nine years someone higher up in the powers that be caught up with me and explained that Iethliopy was supposed to find my groceries and get an offer to take the Farmer class. The angelic being looked slyly off to the side and cleared their throat. “You were supposed to just die in that accident, not come here. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience.”
Then they explained I had to be sent back.
“Alive of course. And we would never split up a family. Anyone that wants to go with you can if they want to."
I was surprised how many came, and so were all the people on the street corner I had gotten hit at.
Fortunately, my family hadn't moved out of my old house while I had been gone.
“And that’s where I’ve been that last nine years Ma, and who all these weird looking women and children are. Namely your daughters in law and your grandchildren, at least most of them. The wives who stayed behind kept the kids I had with them.”
“We only need to stay here until I can convert some of the gold coins I brought with me into cash and then I'm hoping we can buy some land upstate. I was told all my class abilities will work here, and I brought a lot of plants no one on this world has ever seen, as well as some things I developed like temperate growing oranges and bananas."
I offered Ma some filled sacks I had brought with me. "I tried to get everything or substitutes for all the stuff you had on the shopping list, or as best as I can remember."
“Sorry if I forgot something.”
“Anyways, how have things been with you.”
