Chapter 3

“Tell us about yourself Grim.”

“What do you want to know,” He ask.

“Well how do you know commander Stone?” Constantine asks.

“I’ve known her for quite some time, well before she was commander of anything.”

“I was also well acquainted with her father, the duke of Stonewall.”

“He hired me to train her in swords and other such weapons, along with battle strategy.”

“What about you Caltrain, I know you’re no ordinary captain of the Imperial Army.”

“What do you mean by that.” I ask.

“Don’t play dumb with me boy.” He says angerly.

Constantine’s tired eyes open wide, surprised at Grimm’s tone of voice. The campfire crackles in the night as the stars shine down on us.

“Why are you not in the capital with your father,” he asks.

“I ran away.” My voice cracks as sorrow begins to well up from within.

“I was only sixteen and my father began talking about me taking on the throne, I wasn’t ready.”

“I was scared.”

“I understand,” he says in warm fatherly tone. “I’ve seen my share of trouble in life, like with my daughter.” When she was young, I missed a lot, Her first steps, Her first words, all of it.” “I was more worried about becoming a war hero, and commander,

” I was not ready to be a father, but I have learned, and I am still trying to make it up to her.” Truthfully, she does not want me around, but I still take time to stop by when I have the chance. “So are you going to be retiring soon,” I ask. “I should, but military is all I really know without it what am I.” He says somberly.

“We can figure it out Grim.” I say hearteningly.

“What about you Constantine, have anything to share with the group?” Grimm asks.

“Truthfully I’m pretty simple.” He begins to say.

“I joined when I was a young lad, mainly to escape poverty and for the ladies.”

“We all know ladies love a man in armor.”

Grimm lets out a small chuckle as do I.

“Come on Constantine there has to be more than that.” I say with a smile.

“Well, my father was in the military along with my grandfather, so it’s somewhat a family tradition.”

“My father was one of the many soldiers that didn’t make it home, either captured or killed in combat during the first war against the outlanders.”

“I never knew him.”

“My grandfather on the other hand made it home, during the early parts of the war, he was discharged from service after surviving a serious injury.”

" Otherwise, there is not much to say."

“Well, I suppose we should get some rest; I’ll take first watch.” I say.

“Alright captain” I hear Constantine say as he rubs his drowsy eyes.

“Grim says, I’ll take second watch.”

“Sounds good to me, says Constantine as he stumbles to his makeshift tent.”
