🎅 Chapter 24

Santa hunkered down behind a sizable mound of snow, his focus fixed on the mini-map in the corner of his vision. There, he watched as friendly dots disappeared momentarily, only to reappear atop enemy markers, signalling yet another stealthy elimination. [+ 1300 EXP] The blizzard, initially intended to disorient and trap outsiders, had ironically turned into an advantageous hunting ground for the deer.

Santa let out a hearty chuckle, "Ho, ho, ho..."

At first, Santa tried to count how many dark elves his deer took down, but they defeated them so fast that he couldn't keep up with the count.

A red blip on the map moved closer to his position. Santa sighed. It was yet another foolish elf attempting to sneak up on him. Next to him lay the lifeless bodies of two other would-be assassins, concealed by a blanket of snow.

It seemed their failures didn't deter others from trying.

“Persistent little nutmegs,” Santa grumbled.

The stealthy elves might have had the upper hand if it weren't for Twixy's system and Santa’s numerous upgrades. Both their locations on the map and approach were blatantly obvious.

[MistleMaim the Moody, Level 47]

It’s hard to miss the giant, flashing red text on display.

Santa, opting for a strategic approach, pretended to be oblivious. He feigned distraction, appearing lost in thought while discreetly holding his weapon under his coat, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.

Suddenly the Elf pounced screaming, “Eat this fat man!”

Santa tore around, his trusty fire poker carving a path in the cold air as the tip of the thick iron point smacked the elf in the side, sending him tumbling like a baseball. Then as the elf crashed to the ground he hopped over and with a second swift strike to the head, finished off the dark elf with a thwack.

[+ 2500 EXP]

"Looks like the naughty list is longer than ever this year," Santa remarked, astonished at the sheer number of them. Just a few days ago, the idea of evil elves seemed unbelievable to him, but now, he found himself inundated.

A roar echoed from above.

Santa looked up at the powerful spell dome Krampus had conjured, covering the town centre with a fierce blizzard. This spell trapped them all in the middle of the storm, cut off from the world. From within, Santa could hear Aurora outside, roaring in frustration as she tried to break through the magical storm. But the strong barrier, made even more powerful by the intense winds and relentless snow, stopped her at every attempt, keeping her from getting any closer.

“Bauble shards!”

Santa needed to get past the closely-packed Nutcracker army. They stood in rows, four nutcrackers thick with imposing black armour, completely surrounding the town centre. If he could manage that, he could then break Krampus's concentration and stop his spell, then Aurora could join the fight.

Yet there was another massive problem: a huge Nutcracker loomed just behind Krampus, ready to fight anyone who tried to get close to his master.

[Nutcracker Behemoth, Level 64]

Santa stared at the root of all the chaos. Krampus, wearing a smirk of cruel delight, surveyed the scene around him with evident pleasure. He seemed to thrive on the despair of the villagers as they desperately struggled against being shoved into a dark sack, their cries of panic and pain echoing through the air.

While focusing his magic to sustain the blizzard, Krampus turned towards the villagers. He shouted a few incantations, and as he did, darkness enveloped the entire scene, obscuring Santa’s view.

"Damn, I need to get closer," Santa muttered to himself and moved beyond the mound. Ahead was a better vantage point. He made his way to a sturdy fence bordering a nearby house, careful to stick as close to the ground as possible. As he settled into this new position, he felt a peculiar and dense wave of cold air wash over him.

[Santa has been affected by: Shadow of Despair]

Santa looked at the notification in surprise and then opened the info box.

Kneeling behind cover, Santa felt an unexpected force touch his mind.

Santa was swept into a memory, taking him back to an era when he was just a mortal man. He found himself in a land lost in time, bearing an ancient name, where the people spoke in a tongue long since faded from modern memory.

"How long had it been?" Santa wondered, feeling the immense weight of the centuries. Back then, he was a humble man journeying across the vast empire, carrying sacks filled with food and medicine to bring relief to those in dire need.

His brothers had entrusted him with an important mission: to investigate and bring much-needed supplies to a town, now lost to history. Situated in the far northern borderlands of the empire, the town was shrouded in ominous rumours about a beast that wreaked havoc on its residents each winter. Brimming with determination to safeguard the townsfolk and their children, he made his way into the town, escorted by armed guards.

They walked into a nightmare. The ensuing battle was harrowing. Every moment was not just a struggle for survival but also a battle against despair itself. The pain, the suffering, the loss—it was almost too much to bear. But he and his companions stood firm, driven by a determination to protect the young and repel the encroaching darkness.

All the sacrifices had been worth it. For when the final battle was over and the dust settled, the beast lay defeated, its heart pierced with its own dark weapon.

For many centuries, Santa believed they had defeated it.

This memory, replaying in his mind, marked the beginning of his legend. It was more than a fight against a mere monster; it was a crusade to preserve the joy and innocence of world. This was the moment when he began to evolve into something greater than just a man.

After defeating Krampus, Santa's renown grew, transforming him into a cherished figure of the yuletide season. A protector of children and harbinger of the winter solstice. Over the years, he spread joy to more and more children. Whenever whispers of the beast resurfaced, he investigated, often revealing only pretenders.

To stop further attacks and imposters, Santa and his allies had worked hard to remove all signs of the 'winter devil' from history. This seemed to bring peace for a while, but then, four hundred years ago, rumours began to spread about Krampus's return. Santa, confident in his earlier victory, thought these were just myths at first. But now, he realized he had been so wrong.

He'd become too relaxed and careless in his later years. Now, he saw the cost of his negligence in the chaos that was tearing apart his beloved town. Santa felt the burden of his past mistakes weighing heavily on him, made worse by Krampus's dark spell.

Suddenly, this dark aura disappeared, pulling Santa back to the harsh reality.

[Santa is no longer affected by: Shadow of Despair]

As the darkness at the town centre faded, the villagers became visible once again. It was evident that Krampus had cast this spell not just to confine them but to revel in their torment.

Santa's attention was drawn to the ominous black sack beside Krampus. He observed with growing unease how Krampus seemed to quiver faintly each time a village child was thrust into the sack. It was as if he was siphoning energy from the innocent captives. This chilling realization sent a wave of cold dread through him. “He’s getting stronger…”

A surge of righteous anger welled up inside of him. With firm resolve, he declared, "I will stop this madness!" He knew, deep down, that he would use every ounce of his strength, regardless of what it might cost him, to put an end to Krampus's reign of terror.

[Santa has gained: Inner Fire]

Santa pondered a chilling possibility: What if Krampus extended his reach beyond the village to target every child in the world? How much time would pass before he engulfed the entire globe in darkness?

“Hang on,” Santa whispered to himself. “Where’s the magic hem that Mya was after?” The magical rope that secured the black bag was missing. He quickly surmised that it must have been completely engulfed by the debris of the collapsed tower, now lost forever.

Santa felt a soft nudge at his side, drawing him from his thoughts. It was Rudolph. Santa sighed with relief. The deer had silently come up to him after ensuring the area was secure.

"Hey, buddy," Santa said. A wave of calm enveloped him as he spoke to his reindeer. Only then did he recognize how near he had been to losing his composure, pondering if this sudden wave of anxiety might be an aftermath of Krampus's formidable spell.

It seemed, the mere presence of the young deer brought a soothing comfort to him.

"What are you doing there?" Santa asked concern as he watched Rudolph drop a dead elf at his feet. "Are they all... Sleeping?"

Rudolph nodded then sat on his haunches, mimicking a well-trained dog, and looked up at Santa, waiting for his next instruction.

"You're a good deer, you know that?" Santa said affectionately.

If it were possible for a reindeer to grin, then Rudolph certainly did. His pride shone through, unmistakable even in his undead state.

Santa's smile faded as he turned to face the looming threat, his expression growing serious. "Well, it's now or never. Go gather the others. I have a task for them.”

Rudolph dashed off into the snowstorm without a second thought. Santa didn’t have to wait long as, two minutes later, he returned with the Nine, who now appeared even more formidable than before, having levelled up a few more times. They stood at attention before Santa, awaiting Rudolph’s command.

“The cooldowns over, so we might as well get ready for the final push.”

Santa moved in front of Rudolph and handed him a second pill, which the reindeer swallowed without hesitation.

Once more, Santa methodically handed out a pill to each of the reindeer in turn, ensuring that every one of them had received one. As Santa distributed the pills, the reindeer eagerly gobbled them up and immediately levelled up. "Thirteen left," Santa counted.

The deer's transformation, already remarkable, had become downright terrifying. Now standing as tall as a full-grown moose, their muscles were now visibly corded, covered by mottled fur. Their horns had hardened, becoming like stone with razor-sharp tips. What used to be dull, slow-reacting eyes had evolved into acute, intelligent ones, keenly observing and analysing every tiny aspect of their environment.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"Okay, everyone! Listen up," Santa commanded, his voice clear. "We're about to confront an army. Even with your shiny new levels, we're still outnumbered by..." He paused, attempting a mental tally of their foes, but the sheer numbers only muddled his focus.

"Ah, never mind the exact count," he continued, shaking off the distraction. "Just be ready for a tough fight ahead." His eyes swept over his team. “Bring all the dead elves here.”

After Rudolph relayed Santa's orders, the Nine Reindeer sprang into action, moving in perfect unison and scattering in all directions. The idea to gather all the fallen had come from the peculiar gift Rudolph had previously placed at Santa's feet. Within moments, the Zombiedeer had skilfully collected several more bodies, forming a small pile before Santa.

Every few moments, another lifeless body was added to the growing pile. The Zombiedeer, vanished into unseen corners only to reemerge with another dark elf's corpse, sometimes even two. The pile of dead quickly mounted, their faces frozen in snarls and sneers, indistinguishable in the growing heap.

Santa watched as the bodies were stacked into a tall mound. When it grew taller than him, he stepped back carefully, worried that the pile might fall on top of him.

Just before the pile was about to tumble the Zombiedeer completed their grim task and stood at attention, their mission evidently complete, waiting for Santa's review.

“My goodness.” Santa studied the heap of bodies, trying to estimate their number. He recalled the figures provided by S.E.R.G., but he was certain those numbers fell short.

"Good job, guys… It's now time.”

Santa extended his arms towards the pile and concentrated intently. He then spoke in a clear, melodic voice, "O Come, All Ye Undead!"

As Santa's incantation echoed through the frosty air, the mound of fallen elves began to stir. Each body in the pile shifted, commencing the haunting dance of resurrection. The dark elves, once cloaked in the garb of chaos and destruction, were now touched by a unique blend of Christmas and Necrotic magic. As they rose, their black attire gradually shifted to a deep, blood-red hue, complete with Santa hats topped with fluffy white pompoms.

Before him, the red text labels of all the zombies blended together into one.

[Reanimated Zombie x 134, Level 34-48]

“Woah… That's going to be one heck of a cooldown!”

The mindless zombies, moved in unison. Their eyes, formerly gleaming with wicked intent, now shone eerily, their once expressive faces now blank and hollow, driven only by an insatiable hunger. Santa observed them closely, the once formidable elves now standing obediently before him, like puppets awaiting his command.

"Alright," Santa said, his voice firm yet tinged with regret, "it's time to set things right. Follow me, and let's undo the harm that's been done."

The moment had arrived.

"Everyone, follow me." In response, his deer instantly disappeared from view, activating their frosty stealth abilities to blend seamlessly into the snowy surroundings.

Santa boldly emerged from his hiding spot, striding towards the formidable line of Nutcracker soldiers. Stealth was pointless against their tightly packed ranks, shoulder to shoulder in disciplined formation. As he came into view with his bright red uniform seemingly alone, the Nutcrackers, almost as if acting as one, shifted their weapons from a resting stance to battle-ready, preparing to face an incoming army.

"Looks like they're ready for a fight," Santa murmured while glancing at his stat window. “Then let’s give them one.”

Minions: 147

Reawakened Allies: 6/44

Santa burst from his cover and sprinted towards the line of soldiers. As he ran alone, his solitary charge made the Nutcrackers who noticed him question his sanity. "Is he crazy?" one Nutcracker murmured to another, watching Santa's daring approach with a mix of confusion and disbelief.

Unbeknownst to them, a real threat was approaching. A myriad of small shapes were quickly advancing towards their defensive line. Under the densely packed snow, they moved, creating hundreds of trails, their presence betrayed only by the occasional glimpse of white pompoms and flashes of red from their hats.

As Santa charged forward, he glimpsed his minion elves from the corner of his eye, matching their pace as they all neared the enemy lines together.

"Let's show them what we're made of," Santa thought.

As he got closer, the Nutcracker soldiers started to mock his lone attack with insults and sneers.

Santa remained calm and even more confident as he got closer. At thirty yards away, he felt a sense of excitement growing. Holding his fire poker tightly, he paid attention to the sounds around him, muffled by the snow. At twenty yards, the soft thuds of hooves and the quiet jingle of bells were barely heard over the Nutcrackers' mocking jeers.

At ten yards, Santa's grin turned wicked. He stretched out his arm and, with a powerful voice, bellowed, "Dragon fire!"

The spell, empowered by Santa's many of magic passives and stats, raced towards the Nutcracker soldiers lighting up the world in a blinding light. As it reached them, their wooden faces showed nothing but shock and fear.

BOOM!

The spell hit its mark, erupting into a mesmerizing inferno of dragon fire. Vivid hues of red, and green intertwined with the flames, dancing like festive lights against the snowy backdrop. The force of the spell obliterated any it touched and sent many others flying.

The explosion caused a powerful shockwave that travelled far, knocking down hundreds of Nutcracker soldiers and sweeping away many more. The remaining evil elves, still alive, screamed in panic, and even Krampus was caught off guard.

The blizzard briefly faltered, disturbed by the force of the explosion. Seizing the opportunity, a massive creature of bones, claws, and wings swooped down. It broke through the weakening storm with a powerful dive, its anger palpable in the air.

[Aurora, the ‘awakened’ Dragon. Level 75]

Aurora roared as she dived down and slammed into the colossal Nutcracker.

Boom! Another shockwave ripped through the town.

Seizing this critical moment, Santa knew he had to maintain the momentum. He turned to his minions within sight and, focused only on the evil elves and with a powerful voice, chanted, “by Yuletide's shadow and commanding breath, Ghouls, Gremlins, and Ghosts, unleash Christmas death!"

[Santa has activated: 🪄 Ghoulish Command]

The Nutcracker soldiers, struggling to get up from Santa’s spell, cried for revenge. However, they were soon forced to shift their focus when more than a hundred small figures, each donning a bright red Santa hat, started rising from the snow. Growing taller rapidly, these figures transformed into lumbering nightmares with long, sharp claws and piranha like teeth.

“Charge!” Santa shouted.

Suddenly, the ghoulish army was upon the scattered ranks of the Nutcrackers.

But Santa wasn’t done. He seamlessly tapped into the raw energies surrounding him, drawing upon the lessons of Polaris. With a deep concentration, he melded the power of arctic winds and the very spirit of Christmas into one formidable force. Then, with a mighty effort, he unleashed a thunderous roar.

[Santa has activated: 🪄Roar of the Northern Winds]

The sound that came from Santa was both terrifying and awe-inspiring. It sounded like a fierce winter storm mixed with the joyful laughter of a thousand Christmases. This powerful sound wave swept across the battlefield, filled with magical energy and sheer force. It boosted the speed and morale of his zombie army and struck fear into the hearts of his enemies.

The sudden burst of experience points was overwhelming.

Santa, fire poker in hand, charged with determination. He noticed that even as his forces gained the upper hand against the Nutcracker soldiers, a group of evil elves was still doggedly pushing the remaining villagers into the black sack.

"Keep pushing forward!" Santa shouted to his undead troops, his eyes fixed on the chaos ahead.

Dark storm clouds swirled in the sky above the village. Aurora spread her huge wings wide, soaring through the sky as she prepared for another attack on the giant Nutcracker. Below them, small, frenzied zombie elves were busy tearing apart the smaller nutcrackers at the giant's feet.

With a thunderous roar, Aurora dove towards the Nutcracker, her jaws wide open, revealing her sharp teeth. The Behemoth, armed with a huge wooden sword, swung at Aurora, targeting her neck. Their clash sent splinters scattering through the air.

[Level Up! You are now Level 64]

Aurora, acting on instinct, tried to breathe fire, but her skeletal form failed her. The Nutcracker, noticing her failure, grinned wickedly.

Amidst the clamour of battle Santa shouted, “she needs help!" Knowing that he was the only one who could aid her in this crucial moment, he sprinted closer to her position.

[Level Up! You are now Level 65]

Furious, Aurora swung her massive tail and hit the Nutcracker on its side. The force of the blow made the giant Nutcracker stumble backward, crushing a line of houses under its huge weight.

The Nutcracker quickly got back on its feet and lunged at Aurora, sword aimed at her neck. Aurora dodged just in time, and the sword whooshed past her, barely missing.

Immediately countering, Aurora bit down on the Nutcracker's arm. Her teeth sank deep into the wood, and with a powerful twist of her head, she ripped the arm off and flung it across the village. She then soared upwards into the sky ready for her next attack.

But then, Krampus unleashed a blast of dark energy that struck Aurora mid-air.

Wounded, she fell from the sky, crashing into the giant Christmas tree and knocking it down. She continued her fall, slamming into the skating rink, breaking through the ice.

"Aurora!" Santa yelled, rushing to her side. In his haste, he forcefully pushed a Nutcracker warrior out of the way with his poker, even bending the steel of his weapon in his frantic effort to reach her.

[Level Up! You are now Level 66]

Santa sprinted past both allies and enemies, skilfully weaving through the chaos. The sound of heavy thuds resonated around him as the giant Nutcracker, intent on destroying Aurora, followed closely behind, ready to strike her with its remaining arm.

Without hesitation, Santa activated his candy cane leap ability. He launched himself into the air, moving at an incredible speed that outpaced everyone around him. As he soared, he felt a rush of experience points accumulating from the ongoing battle.

"Are you going to be alright?" he asked, his voice panicked, his eyes darting to the swiftly approaching colossal Nutcracker.

Aurora chuckled weakly. "I would be, if I could breathe fire!"

Understanding dawned on Santa, his jaw set firmly. "Then have this!”

She roared.

[Aurora has gained: Inner Fire]

Aurora's mouth opened wide, and a blaze of festive fire engulfed her, lighting up her entire being. Steam billowed around Santa, who quickly jumped back just as the ice beneath them cracked. With a powerful leap, Aurora soared into the sky, transforming her entire body into a formidable weapon.

[Level Up! You are now Level 69]

She dove, striking the Nutcracker with all her might and pinning it to the ground. The impact caused the ground to shake violently, sending a cloud of snow and debris spiralling into the sky. In a fierce display, the bone dragon unleashed her fury, biting, burning, and clawing at the colossal Nutcracker with relentless force.

"We can't let her down," Santa thought to himself, bolstered by the sight of Aurora's relentless onslaught, as he continued his determined advance towards the heart of the enemy lines.

Without missing a beat, he broke into a sprint, heading straight for the epicentre of the battle. Scattered around, the bodies of both enemies and minions lay strewn about, defeated and broken.

"Time to end this," Santa muttered to himself, his resolve unwavering.

As he got closer to Krampus, who was busily commanding the evil elves franticly, Santa's gaze zeroed in on an unwelcome sight.

[Malgrim the Malevolent, Level 19]

The elf was struggling with Santa’s nearly full sack that was darkening before his eyes. Santa picked up his pace, ready to confront the naughty elf and thwart whatever dark plan was in motion.

"Ha, the Fat man's out of his depth, wait till the boss deals with you!" Malgrim sneered, taunting Santa as he turned to sprint away.

Without a moment's delay, Santa reach for the elf. “No, you don’t!”

A ghostly, dark spirit hand emerged from Santa's grasp, moving quickly to encircle Malgrim's waist and lift him off the ground. Simultaneously, Santa reached out with his real hand to grab the increasingly dark sack from the struggling elf.

"Hey, let go! Give that back!" Malgrim yelled, trying to break free from the spectral hand's hold. "No!!!" he screamed in desperation.

Caught in the ghostly hand's clutches, Malgrim coughed and gasped for air. Santa felt an intense surge of energy flow through him, almost overwhelming in its power. Moments later, Malgrim fell to the ground, lifeless, as the spectral hand disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

As Santa secured the sack, the encroaching darkness started to dissipate, revealing the sack's original vibrant red colour. He quickly tore it open, and almost immediately, a head popped out.

Santa quickly apologized with a, “ho, ho, ho,” but before he could extend a hand to help her, Mya burst out of the sack and began to float. She was now wearing a long red wizard's robe that fit her perfectly.
