Hello, I am a book.
As you can tell, you are reading me right now.
And as a book, it is my duty to deliver something for you to read.
...
Wait, what's that?
The title of the book says, "Sample Book for testing purposes”?
Hmm, that doesn’t sound like a title a book would usually carry.
A book title is supposed to give the reader an idea of what the book is about.
"Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain for example is a title to show the reader that the book contains various short stories about the adventures of a boy called Huckleberry Finn.
"The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R Tolkien uses its title to set the fantasy setting of the story, which revolves around a ring and some short and humble Hobbits.
"Les Misérables" by Victor Hugo is French in title, which indicates that the story takes place in France.
But this title?
"Sample Book for testing purposes?"
What sort of idea about the book that is me is this title trying to Convery about me?
Hold on, let's deconstruct this title and the whole book cover to see what's so wrong about it.
Firstly, "Sample Book".
Is this referring to me as a book, or is it some story about a book?
If it's a story about a book, I would read it.
Since there aren't a lot of books about books with stories intertwined with them.
I would gladly read "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak if it's about a book that is trying to not get itself burned by an oppressive regime.
Would be an interesting story.
Maybe "Sample Book" could be about a book trying to be something special.
But if "Sample Book" is about me, then I am quite upset yet puzzled as to why I am called a "Sample Book".
Every book is unique, each one of them has a story to tell.
How could a book be called a "Sample Book" when the word 'Sample' means a small part of something to show what the whole looks like?
How can a book be used as a representation of a whole of something?
...
Maybe I am what they call a "control sample".
Maybe I am a barebone book with only the essentials.
A book cover, some pages, a title, credits to the author and some words for the body.
Maybe I am a representation of the bare minimum of what makes a book a book.
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
A book cover, some pages, a title, credits to the author and some words for the body.
Maybe I am a representation of what all books have in common.
A book cover, some pages, a title, credits to the author and some words for the body.
...
Come to think of it, I don't even know why I am even upset over having "Sample book" as my title.
Maybe it's unexpected and surprising to have a title with the words "Sample book" in it.
It is okay to feel all kinds of emotions to something unexpected.
Like a surprise birthday party.
Or an unexpected reunion with a lost friend.
Either ways, by the end of the day, we all collect ourselves and consolidate the right emotion to that very unexpected thing that messed up our feelings in the first place.
Right now, I feel intrigued to read myself just as you are also engaged to read, so let's read this book, together shall we?
Next, "for testing purposes".
I wonder what a book like me would be useful for what kind of "testing purposes".
I could be used literally as a test subject or apparatus.
The MythBusters used two phone books to test out a myth about friction by alternating the book pages on top of one another.
They tried to pull it apart themselves, but the books held on.
They even tried two trucks to do the pulling, the books still refuse to give in.
They ended up using a tank and an infantry transport vehicle to successfully pull the phone books apart!
Can you believe that?!
Or maybe I am a book containing a draft.
That is an unfinalized version of a book or story.
An author usually would read through a draft
To iron out any unnecessary details and mould it into the final product.
As a book containing a draft, I may be used to test out a concept
Before it is turned into a book.
The first draft for “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl had fifteen children at first.
But Roald’s nephew complained that he didn’t like the draft
So, Roald Dahl went back to his writing hut
And rewrote until the story became what it is today.
To be honest I don’t even know what testing purpose I am to serve as a book.
Maybe the author included that into the title for some other purposes that I am unaware of.
Or maybe the author ran out of ideas for a book title and used that title instead.
Speaking of authors, let’s talk about the person who wrote me.
The author of this book is called “TurkeyHat”.
Could this be a pen name?
A pen name is a pseudonym used by the real author for their works.
Mark Twain for example is the famous pen name used by Samuel Langhorne Clemens for many of his books.
He got the name from the riverboat leadsmen’s cry for measuring the river depth, and the name struck.
I wonder what “TurkeyHat” means.
It could be a metaphor for something hat related.
Or it could be an online nickname that the author used on the internet.
Either ways, seeing a pen name that could be based on online usernames
Is both unusual yet interesting.
Unusual as pen names are usually proper names such as John Smith and Jane Hopper
And interesting as this book is published online.
There is one last thing to deconstruct, and that aspect of the book cover could be the most logical yet insightful.
Said thing is the background illustration.
The background illustration depicts some books in the air.
One of the books is open, while the others are closed.
There’s also a bookshelf with some books in it.
Maybe the books are flying out of the bookshelf, which must have toppled over by some unforeseen force.
Now, background illustrations are not uncommon amongst books.
The illustrations like the title and the book summary are used to give readers an idea of what the book is about.
A kids’ book for example has colourful illustrations to depict innocent stories.
A cooking book would have pictures of food to show that it is a cooking book.
Or an art book has sample illustrations on its cover to show that it is an artbook showcasing art.
Also, the illustration is crudely drawn, maybe it’s drawn in a hurry, or the author has little to no art skills or experience.
Either ways, the illustration too also didn’t bring about a clue to what purpose I as a book should serve for testing.
Maybe the illustration once again would be more suitable for a book about books.
Or maybe the author should have hired someone else to design an illustration to go with the book cover.
Who knows, it’s up to you to figure that out.
…
You know, I am getting a bit tired now.
I am quite bored dissecting my own book cover to you the reader.
But hey, at least I managed to deliver something worthwhile for you to read.
I as a book may not be perfect, and there is so much more about me that I can share about myself.
But alas, in a time where people are reading less books and reading more stuff on the internet,
It would be a good idea to keep some books short, so that people don’t have to fuss around with time to read a lengthy book that they want to read.
For instance, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry” is a short book cloaking in at 224 pages for busy people who wish to learn about Astrophysics on the go.
Welp, you’ve reached the end of this book.
I wish you a wonderful day ahead.
Maybe you can go and read some of the stuff that I’ve mentioned here.
Either ways, I wish you farewell reader.
For there’s a whole world of knowledge waiting to be read out there!
End
