Chapter 39: Battle against the Goblin Lords

Chapter 39: Battle against the Goblin Lords

Zane dodged the first blow from the goblin lord by leaning to the side and swung the greatsword into the creature's side, throwing it into a tent and falling to the ground himself. When Zane hit the ground he began rolling away and jumped up. But he began feeling his tiredness catching up to him, clouding his mind and making his movements duller. The goblin lord had also recovered from falling down and was approaching Zane again, blood dripping out of the wound on its side. Zane smiled again and began moving towards it, becoming faster and faster, the goblin lord did the same. Eventually, they nearly collided. Zane swung down the greatsword from above and the goblin lord was aiming its fist at his throat. Just before the goblin lords fist hit his throat he could feel the resistance of its head against the sword and hear the sound of the greatsword quickly sinking into its head. The goblin lord fell to the ground, the large blade stuck in its split open head.

Zane had no time to rest, the six goblin sorcerers had already surrounded him, their staffs with sand dark brown crystals lifted high and earth forming from nothingness in the air above them. Six large earth bullets were shot at Zane who jumped up last second to dodge. His foot was hit by one of them and his body was shifted on its side, making him fall onto his back. The six goblin sorcerers approached him, looking down on him with their cat-like eyes filled with lust.

Fucking great.

Zane grabbed the foot of one of them and began swinging him like a morning star. With a loud cracking sound the bones of the goblin broke and the resistance became weaker and weaker as the goblin sorcerer screamed in pain, crashing into his comrades, throwing them to the ground. Zane got up and smashed the goblin he was using as a weapon into the ground, shattering its head. He then picked up one of their staffs which had a sharp end and rammed it into the head of the closest goblin sorcerer.

Two down . . .

He moved on to the next and killed each of the goblin sorcerers by stabbing them through the head with a wooden staff, painting its end red. Zane noticed the red crystal embedded at its top.

Fire eh? Perfect.

He lifted up the staff and began channelling some Aura into it, activating the crystal and forming a fire sphere above his head that became larger and larger. The red crystal slowly began cracking as it became overcharged with Aura and Zane fired the large fireball into the horde of goblins that had stormed back down into the camp. He only managed to burn about half of them and threw away the staff, picked up the next and began channelling Aura into it. But when he was about to fire the next fireball at the goblin horde he felt his body getting weaker and his eyelids getting heavier.

I really fucked up, didn't I?

Zane threw the fireball into the wall and fell to the ground. In his sleep, he could hear screaming and yelling, as if someone was trying to call out to him. He could also feel someone or something drag him somewhere but couldn't bring himself to wake up. After a short while, he could hear crying, which stopped after a while. When he could finally open his eyes again he was shocked for a few seconds.

He found himself hanging head down from a tall wooden beam, in front of him was a table, blood running down it. And on that table were a few goblins and the lifeless body of the village chief's son, being devoured by the goblins to satisfy their hunger.

How do I get out of this?

Zane's arms were bound as well as his feet. He began to move his hands apart, slowly breaking the rope that had been used to tie his hands. Once he had freed his hands he drew his katana and quickly cut through the rope around his feet, making him fall to the ground. As soon as the goblins, which were currently devouring the young man's body to satisfy their hunger, heard him fall to the ground they jumped up and drew their weapons.

Zane, still slightly tired, quickly cut up the four goblins in front of him. He looked around and saw that he was in one of the tents in the camp. The ground beneath him suddenly started shaking and he could hear heavy footsteps. Another goblin lord entered the tent, holding a large greatsword just like the one Zane had used to kill the other goblin lord. Zane sheathed his katana, picked up one of the swords that had belonged to the goblins he had just killed and charged at the goblin lord. He ducked down to avoid the greatsword and drove the sword deep into the belly of the goblin lord, pushing him to the ground. Then he jumped back picked up another sword and ran towards the goblin lord again, piercing its throat with the sword and leaving it there. The numbness in his right arm had left but it was still hurting pretty badly.

Really hope it isn't broken.

Zane opened his satchel, took out a healing potion and drank it. It tasted horrible. He could feel the pain in his arm slowly fade and picked up the greatsword before he left the tent. As soon as he exited the tent he could feel the stares of many goblins on him. There was one more goblin lord and about thirty more goblins.

Let's get this party going then.

Zane began to swing around the large greatsword, killing multiple goblins with a single swing. Blood splattered all over the ground. The other goblin lord in the camp grunted loudly which made the other goblins stand back. This one seemed larger than the others, had more muscles and wielded two greatswords. It grinned at Zane, showing him its large sharp teeth.

Zane swung his greatsword at the goblin lord, taking it by surprise. The goblin lord blocked Zane's attack with one of the large greatswords it had and brought down the other one. He leaned his head to the side and caught the blow with his shoulder. The blade wasn't sharp enough to go through the hard leather his armour was made of and the still-lingering effects of the potion reduced the pain he felt. The goblin lord looked at him in confusion which quickly turned into a look of pain when it noticed Zane burying his foot in its stomach and kicking the creature back a good few meters, making it lose one of its greatswords. With a loud clank sound, the greatsword fell from Zane's shoulder and to the ground. With a loud grunt, the goblin lord recovered and got off the ground. It immediately began charging at Zane who spun around, let go of the greatsword and let it fly towards the goblin lord. The creature deflected the thrown weapon with a quick swing. Zane, who had picked up the other greatsword, used that moment to swing at its throat, cutting it open and letting blood gush out like water out of a fountain.

Zane looked at the remaining goblins who were looking at him, then the dead goblin lord, back at him then back at the dead goblin lord. A sense of fear crept across their faces, along with rage at the death of one of their leaders. Two fireballs flew past Zane's head, setting the tent behind him on fire. Standing behind all the other goblins were two that wore robes with blood splattered over them and staffs in their hand.

Stealing from your dead comrades eh?

Zane charged at the cluster of goblins, swinging his greatsword. Heads and other limbs went flying, blood splattered all over the place, on the ground, on the weapons, on his cloak and armour and on other goblins. A sense of freedom began creeping up in Zane as he massacred the helpless goblins who could do nothing but try and get through to him. They tried with daggers, swords, spears, axes, shields, hammers, even with bows and arrows. The only thing Zane had to look out for were the fireballs sent flying to him by the two goblins in the back. But their Aura was meagre, barely enough to produce a fireball the size of Zane's head.

Another fireball nearly hit Zane's head, flying just past his face, making him feel the heat. A goblin used that moment to jump on his back, putting a dagger to his throat. Before it could cut his throat open Zane quickly smashed his back against the rough wall, crushing the goblin. He then grabbed it by the back of its neck with his free hand and rammed it against a spear one of the other goblins was holding, and then broke off the speartip with some of the shaft. He used that to kill another goblin by driving through a goblins eye, into its head and out the other side.

Annoying little fucks, I need to take care of the sorcerers in the back.

Zane began cutting his way through the goblins, towards the sorcerers. Once he reached them they looked at him for a moment, with fear in their eyes as they saw the blade quickly approach them. Their heads went flying up into the air and then fell to the ground, creating a puddle of blood.

He took a look at the blade he had been using, it was beginning to chip, and it was completely covered in goblin blood. Zane threw it at the goblins, just like he had thrown it at the goblin lord before, cutting into the now much smaller horde. Then he picked up one of the staffs laying on the ground, lifted it up in the air and created a fireball. The crystal began cracking almost immediately from Aura overload and Zane had to fire the rather small fireball into the horde, killing only a minuscule amount of goblins.

Well, this isn't very helpful.

Zane flipped the staff in his hand and used the pointy end to stab the closest goblin through the chest and took its sword. Two goblins, both equipped with spears, began charging at him. He stepped on one of the spears, breaking it in half and caught the other one, twisted it which made the goblin let go, flipped it in his hand and hurled it at the goblin, pinning him to the ground by the throat and cut the throat of the other one using the sword.

A goblin flung its axe at his head. Zane leaned to the side, letting the axe fly past his head and land in the nearest wall. He then charged at the cluster of goblins, stabbed the closest and crushed the head of another beneath his foot, grabbed one with his free hand and strangled it, then used its body as a weapon to beat another goblin. Blood splattered everywhere as Zane continued to massacre the goblins. A small group of goblins began fleeing as they saw how all their comrades were beheaded or otherwise mutilated by the human towering above them like a mountain.

As soon as Zane was done with the goblins attacking him he turned to the ones trying to flee. He took an axe from the ground and flung it at the one in front, splitting its head. Then he charged at them, swung his sword and cut off the head of another one, stabbed the third through the chest and kicked the fourth into the wall where he then split its head with the sword. The last one had sunk to the ground and stared at him with fearful eyes as it watched him approach. Zane picked up the creature and twisted its neck.

He took a moment to look over the battlefield. There were more goblin corpses than he could count, many weapons, either broken or abandoned, laid under, on top of and between them. The tents were still burning from being hit by the fireballs, the fire spreading all around the cave chamber, slowly filling it with smoke. When he concentrated he could still feel the presences of four goblins, three notable and one strong.

One king, three lords . . .

Zane smiled as he walked over to where he had killed the two goblin sorcerers and picked up the one intact fire staff, there was no sign of the staffs that had belonged to the six sorcerers he had killed before falling asleep. With this one staff in hand, he walked towards a tent that had been set up directly against the wall of the chamber, went inside and saw another gate, blocking his way. He kicked it, but the gate was too sturdy. Zane looked at the fire staff in his hand.

Well then, seems like I'll have to use you sooner than I wanted.

He began creating a fireball and when the crystal began to crack he fired it at the wooden gate, setting it on fire. Before the whole tent could catch fire as well he kicked the gate again breaking it and opening a path further into the cave. Grunting came to his ears as he walked down the tunnel. At its end he found another chamber, in it, three goblin lords wearing rudimentary armour, and sitting on a throne made of bones, wood, stone, and weapons, sat a goblin as tall as Zane was, wearing finer armour than any goblin he had ever seen, holding in one hand a longsword far too well made for a goblin, he had long, black hair that hung down to his neck in a long braid and a braided black beard, short horns grew out of its skull in the form of a crown that was overshadowed by the four large horns growing out of its forehead. The large goblin was flapping its large ears as it stared at Zane with the two blue cat-like eyes. It began laughing.

Never seen a goblin king this large.

"Well done, well done indeed, human," the goblin king said. "But now perish!"

It pointed at him with its longsword. The three goblin lords all turned to Zane, pointing their spears at him.

This might take a while.
