29 - Drawing a line in the sand

I'm in a very large room. I'm standing behind a few people. We're lined up for something. The room is filled with gray walls as far as I can see. I can barely make out the back wall of the room.

Hmm, I'm a catgirl again. Curious. I've seen a room like this before. When was it?

Someone in the front of the line walks off into the maze of walls. The line moves up. I'm holding something. A piece of paper with writing.

Number 161.

I vaguely remember that I was doing something else just a short while ago.

What was I doing? It sure seemed important.

The line moves up. Three people are ahead of me. They're staring at their papers. And their numbers. I don't have papers. Now I can see a white line on the floor. The first person in line is standing right behind it. Past the line is a person sitting behind a desk. I'm not sure what it's made of. Painted metal?

I feel strange. Disconnected. I can feel the paper with the number in my hand/paw. My body doesn't quite feel like Zach's did in RWO. Where's Zach? Wasn't he here a minute ago?

The line moves up. Two more in front of me. The man behind the desk is wearing a black suit. I've seen someone like that before. Do I know him?

One more person in front of me. The person before her walked up to the desk and talked to the man in the black suit. The man in the black suit is wearing reflective glasses. I'm scared.

The lady walks up to the desk and then heads off into the gray maze.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"161."

I'm standing behind the line. There's something I should be doing. I wonder what.

The person behind me pushes me a little and says, "That's you. Go on."

Oh. It's my turn. I walk up to the desk, and I see a small sign on it. It says 'Immigration'.

I'm standing in front of the desk now. The man behind the desk has a stack of paper folders. How'd I know that?

The man looks up at me and says, "Mister Grindswell." I know that voice! He's a-

"Hashi!"

"Huh?"

Zach is in front of me. He asks, "Are you ok?"

"I don't know. I was somewhere else." I'm in the library now with Zach and Kithera.

I say "I don't know what happened."

"That looked a lot one of Zach's microsleeps," Kithera added.

My game body doesn't have feelings. "I'm feeling strange."

Zach and Kithera have moved over to me. I see both the library and the room with the desk at the same time. I'm falling.

"Mister Grindswell!" the agent says. I can see his ear piece with the white spiraled cord.

"Mister Grindswell, pay attention. This is important."

I'm here now. The library is gone. I answer him, "Yes, I'm Hashi Grindswell."

The agent looks a little less severe now. He reaches over and taps my numbered paper. I see a golden line on the floor appear that runs left of the desk and into the maze of cubicles. I'm feeling less afraid now.

He pulls off his reflective glasses and looks at me. I can see myself reflected in his eyes. A tiny me. Not a catgirl.

"Your case worker is ready to see you now. Follow the line and you will find her office." He sounds kind and softer somehow. I just noticed that his suit is really a grayish green. I don't know why it looked black before.

I follow the golden line into the sea of cubes. As I take my third step, the line starts to sparkle. I hear behind me a clock chime the hour. I hear it ticking now. I turn to look and there's nothing at all behind me. Where did the cubes go? I turn back and there in front of me, I see a pleasant looking woman sitting on a couch. She pats the seat beside her.

"Welcome, Hashi. Forgive the abduction. But we need to talk." Something about how she speaks reminds me of David.

I sit down beside her. She was wearing some sort of suit when I first saw her. Now she's wearing a golden flowing gown with many layers. She's so beautiful. I wonder what she wants to talk about.

I guess I'll see Zach and Kithera later.
