Hello, friends, hunters, and Planeswalkers. MatrixNova here and welcome to my newest crossover fiction and one of my pet projects I've had in my head for a few years now: Rwby: The Gathering.
Now, I know Magic: The Gathering has more than a TON of lore behind it, including lore on specific named cards and some novella. I'll try to do my absolute best with it, but understand that since this is a crossover with RWBY, I'll have to take some… liberties.
I love Magic: The Gathering to this day and that will not change. It's one of my favorite card games ever and always will be. What's your favorite deck or theme that's appeared in the game? Please let me know.
Now, let's dive right into the action!

*Unknown Location. Unknown Time*
It was a dark and stormy night in Remnant. Lightning flashed and thunder boomed as rain fell on the open meadow which was essentially a battlefield. Flashes of white kept illuminating the night and large patches of grass were charred black from lightning strikes as Grimm were being cut down as they came close to the combatants. Beowolves, Ursa Majors, Boarbatusks, and Nevermores were being killed, one after the other. One said combatant fighting the Grimm was a middle-aged man with tousled gray hair and thin brown eyes with a pair of small round black glasses on the bridge of his nose. He was 6 feet 6 inches tall. He was wearing a dark green scarf with a small purple cross on it. The man's outfit mainly consisted of an unzipped black suit over a buttoned vest and green undershirt, black trouser shoes and long, dark-green pants. "They just keep coming!" He sliced a Beowolf that was just about to bite into his shoulder.
"Oh, come on, Ozpin!" Shouted another voice. The source was an elderly woman with long steel-gray hair, eyes that were covered by her goggles wearing a red cloak adding to a brown and tuscan red outfit with black and light brown shoulder pauldrons, a short-sleeve shirt underneath the red cloak, brown armbands, slightly torn brown pants, and brown combat boots. She wielded a wooden staff that had a burning fire at the top. "We can get through this!" She swung her staff in a sideways motion which created a wave of fire that engulfed a bunch of Boarbatusks that were charging towards the two.
"And here I thought age tempered your hot-headedness, Jaya!" Ozpin managed a small smile on his face as the two kept taking down Grimm left and right. "How long before the others get here?" He panted lightly after taking down an Ursa.
"Hopefully, soon. Even I'm burning out here." Jaya joked as she whacked a Boarbatusk aside with relative ease.
Suddenly, a purple aura surrounded several Nevermores and brought them down on charging Beowolves and Ursa. Ozpin and Jaya turned to see a woman with blond hair tied into a bun, a lone curl hanging off the right side of her face, vibrant green eyes, a pair of oval glasses and teal colored earrings. This woman wore a white business shirt style top that was actually opened a little at the chest which showed off her bust, a black business skirt, black stockings, long black, high heeled boots, and a black cape with tattered ends, the inside being purple. "Could you two not have gotten into trouble?"
"Not possible, Glynda." Ozpin retorted in a fighting position. "Considering how many Grimm there are charging us right now, I'm surprised Jaya and I have lasted this long without assistance."
Jaya gained a serious expression on her face looking at the two, taking off her goggles. "You two be thankful it's not worse than Grimm." Quickly turning around, she unleashed a small torrent of fire into the sky, burning the feathers off at least three Nevermores.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed throughout the battlefield. Glynda looked forward and her expression turned a bit grim. "There's something bigger coming…" She muttered. Ozpin and Jaya looked to see what she was talking about. A large green beast with sharp, dark yellow spines going all the down it's back, sharp claws on its feet, sharp teeth complete with two larger fangs outwardly jutting from the bottom, a red head with parts reaching the sides of it's head with the top part forming into a larger spine and other parts jutting from the bottom, four nose holes instead of the standard two, and glowing yellow eyes walked into view, growling as it did so.
Beside this creature were two slightly smaller creatures of the same build, but no sign of red whatsoever, smaller yellow spines on their backs, no larger teeth in their mouths, and their claws also weren't as long or as sharp as the center creature. Said center creature let out a deep, guttural roar.
"Rampaging Baloths…" Jaya growled in frustration as she put her goggles back on. "This will be trouble for sure…" The two flanking creatures roared to the darkened sky and charged the trio of humans, claws and teeth bared and ready to rip them to shreds. "Get ready! Here they come!"
The first creature was headed towards Glynda who was as ready as she could be. The Baloth roared as it swiped at her with its claws, but she dodged the attack seconds before it happened. This only proceeded to anger the creature further as it jumped forward, now attempting to bite her. Glynda saw this coming as well and evaded, but the Baloth was proving to be faster than it looked. All of a sudden, a purple aura surrounded the creature as Glynda lifted it up into the air. The creature was confused for a second before returning to snarling at the blonde woman. Merely shaking her head, Glynda flung the Baloth far from her. A slight thud was heard when the Baloth landed. "Phew." She sighed to herself. "Now, to help Ozpin and Jaya." She made her way to her comrades.

As Glynda fought the first Baloth, the second Baloth was fighting Ozpin who, like Glynda, was holding it off. It roared and performed a sideways strike with its left claws, but the elderly man fended off the attack with his cane. "What a fearsome creature you are and you aren't even a Grimm." He commented. The creature obviously didn't care as it growled at the man. It ran around trying to get into Ozpin's blind spot, but Ozpin was watching it very carefully as it was circling him.
Ozpin ran backwards to the creature, hitting it in the head with his cane which disoriented it for a few seconds, giving the man the advantage he needed as a sharp blade suddenly popped up from the bottom. "I don't have to use that little trinket often." He muttered to himself as he slashed the Baloth's right eye in one swift motion, causing blood to spurt out. The creature roared in pain as it stumbled back from the shock of the attack. However, this didn't last long as it reoriented itself and snarled, though Ozpin had a small smirk gracing his face.
Just as the beast was about to charge again, the same purple aura surrounded it. Ozpin turned his head to see Glynda a couple feet behind him, "Honestly, Ozpin. Can you get anything done without?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Good to have your assistance, Glynda." Ozpin retained his grin as he looked back toward the Baloth. "What is your opinion of this Baloth, anyway?" He asked his long-time comrade and friend. "I'm curious about your opinion."
"A snarling beast with serious anger issues." Glynda deadpanned bluntly seconds before like with the first Baloth, she flung the creature away from them. "Now, we should go assist Jaya if we need to."
"Yes. Let's." Ozpin gestured as the two moved to help out.
While this was going on, the leading Baloth was charging Jaya who was at the ready, at least as much as she could've been given that the lead Baloth was no doubt stronger than the other two. Jaya jumped to the side as she knew she wouldn't really be able to fend off the charge. The beast roared in anger at not having hit its intended target. "Sorry, but you'll have to do better than that." Jaya twirled her staff around for a minute before readying it, flames crackling at the top despite the rain still falling. "Come and get some, then." She taunted with a serious face.
The lead Baloth roared loudly, almost as loud as the thunder that boomed as it jumped into the air for a few seconds before slamming both of its front claws into the ground, sending a small shockwave which sent debris flying through the sky. Jaya saw this and twirled her staff, creating small fireballs that destroyed the debris. She may have been older, but she was still sharp enough to evade the charge from the lead Baloth.
Jaya managed to whack the beast on the right side of it's face with her staff, leaving a burn on said side close to the eye thanks to the fire burning. The lead Baloth roared in pain, but that wasn't enough to deter it. If anything, that just made it angrier as it glared at the elderly woman. She caught something in her peripheral vision and it was Ozpin and Glynda moving towards her. This caused her to smirk at the lead Baloth. "You know, you really should've come with more backup."
The beast was confused until the purple aura covered it. It was then lifted into the air and Ozpin proceeded to slash the creature in the underbelly. The creature roared as Jaya covered it in fire from her staff which burned it. Lightning flashed again as the trio continuously attacked the lead Baloth until it was dropped to the wet ground, barely alive. Groaning in pain, the creature managed to look up at the trio before Jaya blasted it with another torrent of fire which ultimately put it down for good.
As the new corpse burned amidst the rain, the three humans looked at each other. "Rampaging Baloths… A strong creature, but not strong enough for the three of us working together." Jaya commented.
"I was not expecting to see a creature like that in a peaceful field like this." Ozpin replied.
Jaya looked around at the charred grass and claw marks on the ground. "Formerly peaceful." She sighed.
"That seems to be the way of things now." Glynda voiced. "That's why it's the duty of people like us to defend the innocent and ensure peace for all."
"Not to mention teach the next generation." Jaya added. "We won't be around forever, so the ones younger than us must be ready." The expression on her face turned serious again. "There are worse things than the Rampaging Baloths out here." Ozpin and Glynda looked at each other, taking in Jaya's words. She was right saying that they wouldn't be around forever to help Remnant or anywhere else for that matter. They had to be prepared for what came next, be it Grimm or otherwise.
"We understand what you're saying, Jaya." Ozpin nodded. "We must always remain vigilant with our enemies possibly all around us. We all must become united if we can truly fight back."
"We should start heading back." Glynda said. The trio began trekking back to their encampment, all the while Ozpin and Glynda were still considering the words of their comrade.

Hello, everyone. I hope you all liked the prologue of Rwby: The Gathering. Now, this is only the beginning of this grand adventure. Now, like I said, I know there is a ton of lore with Magic: The Gathering, but I will be taking liberties as this is a crossover with RWBY. Now, This prologue had Ozpin, Glynda Goodwitch, and the Planeswalker Jaya Ballard fighting off not only Grimm, but Rampaging Baloths as well. They managed to fend all of them off without much damage.
They also have a conversation about the next generation, remaining vigilant and the importance of being united.
Now, keep in mind that this is the older Jaya Ballard. There will probably be a flashback chapter showing Jaya in her younger years, but that's much later down the line.
