Prologue - The Runemaster wakes up

"GO!"

I shouted in desperation.

"Leave me alone and go!"

"B-but!"

"No buts! You are... you're not... I don't need you here."

She stared at me in shock. Tears already started to swell out from her eyes.

"NO! We're supposed to be together in this! But why!?"

She was still not fleeing away. She still being stubborn on being my side. Why? Why!? Why!? Why!? Why!? Why!? Why!? Why!? Why!? Why!? Why!?

"I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE! LISTEN TO ME YOU STUPID, TROUBLESOME CAT! Y-YOU! WHY WON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME!?"

She looks like she was surprised by my voice. Suddenly hearing someone raising their voice at you would surely get anyone be surprised in shock. She took some steps back. Probably because she can't believed that I was raised my voice against her. It's not that I don't raise my voice at her every time. In fact, I would always yell at her for the stupid things she did in the past.

But this time was different. The reason why I'm raising my voice was entirely different from the past. The way I'm saying my words right now was a voice with the sound of hatred. The reason for that... was something that looks unreasonable to some people and yet was something that affected me greatly. It did.... affect me greatly. It completely shattered my reason of living. That was the reason that made me realize that I was living in a false hope.

Fwoosh~! Fwoosh~!

Flames behind my back became more aggressive. The ground continued to collapse. The surrounding atmosphere continued to distort.

----Shit! I must do something quick!

Currently, she and I were standing on a floating platform that was connected to some sort of port. It totally looked like a wide hoverboard but right now, it's shaking. The whole area is slowly meeting its destruction.

----Shit! Shit! Shit! Something! Must do something!

There, the floating platform started to separate away from the port-like edge. That was it! I instantly thought of an idea to make her go away. I grabbed her arm and pulled her towards me. She looked surprised but then she lose her consciousness. The reason for that is I hit her in the solar plexus. Robbing away of her consciousness, she felt asleep.

Looking down below, I saw some people. I know all of them. Their faces were those of terrified powerless villager in front of the invading demon monsters. True, since this situation right now is no different than a fantasy story where the protagonist fights against the demon monsters. And you could say that that protagonist is me. At least that's how I want it to be.

I could see him down below. My bestfriend who looks so worried and terrified, tried to come here. But I stopped him. How? I threw the unconscious girl that I'm holding in my arms. I threw her down and made them more terrified. Him, my bestfriend steeled himself and ran towards her. Without that much effort, he caught her as soon as she reached his range.

Splendid. As expected of my bestfriend. You can count on him when the time comes. He was gently caressing her face and certainly looks worried. He looked up back to me and glared at me with hatred.

"Take care of her. Promise me that."

"WHY!? WHY DO YOU HAVE TO DO THIS!? WE DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN! TELL US! WHY!?"

He, my bestfriend asked me. Hearing him saying those words made me gritted my teeth in anger.

"WHY YOU SAY!? HOW ABOUT YOU SHUT UP AND THINK FOR A SECOND!!! WHY AM I LIKE THIS!? THINK WHAT YOU PEOPLE HAVE DONE TO ME!!! WHY DIDN'T I TALK ABOUT IT!? LOOK AT THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU!!!"

I did not expect those words from him and he did not expect those words from me.

He simply stared at me. His face was a mixture of guilt and confusion.

"This is it. I'm done. I... I don't want any of this anymore. I'm so tired of this. Any more of this and it would surely break me faster than I could think of. I'd rather end everything this way. This is the best solution for everyone. That's why... I'm saying my goodbyes right here. Please take care of her. I'm sure I could trust you on that can't I? You're my bestfriend so I'm sure you can."

"N-no... I... I don't want this kind of ending. N-no....--!"

Boom~!

It was the sound of an explosion. That made him to be on his guard while the rest seems to be running towards him.

"Goodbye."

I said that with my weak voice. Probably tired from all those shoutings. I held the things that aided me from the very start of the change in my life. In my hand, were the things that accompanied me in my hardships.

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!"

With a loud roar, I ran. I ran towards the interior of the place I'm currently at. I dashed with all my might. Running non-stop. Jumping and evading every obstacle that gets on my way. There I found myself inside the very center of this place. There, my enemy stood as if waiting for me.

"You bastard human. You have finally arrived! Let's end this once and for all!"

"OUROBOROS!!!"

I howled with all my might. Charging against an enemy that has the power to make the whole world kneel down. Power that can enslave the whole mankind. An evil that must be defeated. That was what Ouroboros was. My sworn enemy.

Our greatest clash started. It continued for quite a while and the ending came in early.

Pale white light devoured everything. Everything disappeared in an instant.

I saw nothing but darkness with my eyes.

It was the end. The ending that I want to happen. I'm sure the world was saved. But..... It feels lonely.

Regrets came to haunt my mind. And soon.... and soon.... and soon...

"Guh....."

I'm..... alive?

My eyes opened slowly. My body feels heavy. It felt like it was heavier than a boulder. Everything was dark and the vision is very limited.

But why am I in this position? Why am I hugging my knees? And also, is this a tree's root? What in the world is going on? It feels like I'm the seed inside of a fruit. Yuck... that's disgusting.

I tried to stood up but I instantly fell down. It seems that my body is not accustomed to it yet. Then that means, that I was sleeping? I presumed myself to be dead after that cla-...

What? I died? From what? Why can't I remember?

I tried to support myself and forcibly stood up. There was a tree root that goes vertically up. I clung to it and tried to support myself to stand. My vision is kind of already accustomed to the darkness then suddenly-

"Guh....!"

Fwoosh! Fwoosh!

The whole place suddenly brightened. I was caught off guard and almost fell down. I strengthened my grip towards the tree root and tried to stand up again.

"Congratulations on waking up master. We are glad of your awakening."

----!

What the!? My eyes widen in shock upon seeing the person who greeted me. Such childish voice can't be owned by a mature person.

My eyes adjusting to the surrounding soon clearly saw the figure of the person talking to me.

Just like what I thought. The owner of that childish voice was really a child. And of top of that, she's a little girl too. Probably around eight to ten years old. She had pretty long white hair, white eyelashes and eyebrows too. She wore something like those of Japanese kimonos. They were white. Everything on her is white.

She was holding something like a wooden torch. Illuminating the whole dark room carved with different strange letters. I can see that there's something hanging from her pinky finger. Taking a little bit of time analyzing on what it was led me to the conclusion that it was a bat. Unlike other bats, this one looks like a mechanical robot with all the shining skin it has. Kind of like a car's metallic painting.

"Y-you are..."

"Yes. It is I, Yuki. I'm glad that once again, we could talk to each other master."

A sudden pain in my head made me lose my strength and fell directly to the ground. I held my head in pain. Thinking that something bad is going to happen was only half true.

I remember everything. About Yuki, and the bat hanging from her pinky finger. Both of them were my trusted companion that didn't abandon me and fought together with till the end. I also remember about them. Just by remembering them made me frown. Ah... how I wish I didn't remember them. Then, there were also information that came to my head from that pain. I remembered more things. Important or not, I remembered them all. The reason why am I still alive and currently existing right now, I remembered it.

The pain have subsided and now I'm feeling fine. I tried to stand up and there was no problem at all. My strength suddenly returned as if my body received a full healing potion. I tried to throw some jabs. It seems fine. I also tried to do some kicks. It also seems fine.

"Master. Suddenly doing things like that. I can see it you know."

"Ah... I'm not wearing anything at all. Is there any clothes for me to wear Yuki?"

"Sadly, I don't have one except for this shabby looking robe. If master ordered it, I could procure clothes for you."

"Hmm... I'll take this robe then. I can't afford you going somewhere alone. By the way, where is this place?"

I took the robe and covered my body with it. Man... I looked like a pervert with this. Seeing that I already covered my body with the robe, Yuki started to answer my question.

"I only woke up four days ago since your awakening master. From this place, I tried to go outside and what I saw was something unbelievable."

"Unbelievable?"

"Please follow me. You need to see it by yourself."

I slowly started to follow Yuki. She maybe look like a small child but her walking pace is kind of fast. Soon enough we came to a staircase going up.

"Is this some kind of a place for rituals?"

I asked and she replied.

"I don't know myself but this is what I and this child first saw after waking up."

Keek~! Keek~!

The bat clinging to Yuki's finger started to fly away. I'm sure he was leading us to the outside. Me and Yuki followed him and soon after I can see the light at the end of the staircase.

I feel anxious about it but I must keep going on. Maybe she felt that I was anxious, Yuki held my hand.

"Master. Me and Hibiki are here for you. We will not abandon you. We will not let the same thing happen to you again."

I feel reassured by her words. For someone like her who looks like a child, she's acting like a mature woman.

"Is that so. I'm glad Yuki."

She smiled at me continued to walk with me in this staircase. Soon after that, we finally exited that unknown place. It was on a side of a mountain. I don't know where this is but when I turned my head. I was surprised.

What greeted me was something unbelievable. It was something that would appear in a fantasy story. You could say that it looks like a scenery came out from a science fiction story.

My eyes widen in surprise. What the hell is this? Where are we? Is this the world that I saved?

Countless questions started to appear in my hear. In the midst of confusion Yuki spoke to me.

"It seems that we are in a futuristic world my confused master. This isn't the world we know. Maybe we are transported to another world? Or maybe, we slept too much and just woke up centuries later from our time. Either could be the answer."

Her face was serious and then she lifted her lips in a smile.

"What will you do master?"

She's serious. I am serious. There was only one answer to that question.

"It seems that we're in a foreign land. I don't know if this is the same country or not. Even if we really end up in another world, there's only one thing that we could do."

"And that is?" She asked.

"That is.... to investigate this place."

Yuki smiled as if she's relieved to hear my answer. She then drew something from her kimono.

"Master. I think you need this."

"Ah... this is."

Yuki gave me something like a small, weird looking box. Inside it was a stack of cards. It was the same size as a credit card. Of course I knew what it was. I used those cards as a way to defeat my enemies back then. They were my power.

I drew one of the cards and then--

Tap~! Tap~!

"Come! Fubuki! Hibiki!"

"As you wish."

"Keek~!"

Yuki slowly disappears as if she became transparent and so does the bat named Hibiki. Lights coming from them gathered to the cards' box. Faint light covered that side of the mountain. After that, an unknown silhouette traversed the night. Traveling towards the mysterious scenery he saw from the moment he woke up.
