A raging beast came running through the bushes, uprooting trees and trampling anything that stood within its path. It was chasing something. Something small and nimble.
“Faster! Fly faster!” one of them shouted.
“I can't! This is as fast as I can go!” the other one yelled back.
The enormous bear-like creature was chomping at the air in front of it, trying desperately to reach the two small figures. Closer and closer it came and they could feel its warm breath puffing out on every exhale, the razor sharp teeth clasping together just behind their heels. One of them fell behind more than the other. One more step. One more bite.
“Trix!” he yelled out, grabbing her hand. He knew. A searing pain shot through his body as the beast caught his left leg and squeezed, the bones cracking under the strength of its jaws.
“Pix!!” she turned around just in time to meet his eyes, before his hand got torn away from hers as the beast pulled him back and started swinging its head left and right violently, flailing the prey it caught around.
“PIX!! NO!!” Trix yelled and drew a small blade that rested on her belt. “LET HIM GO!!”
“Run away!!” Pix shouted back at her. He felt his leg twist and turn in directions it never should have as he was tossed around. The pain was so great his body shut it out for the time being, otherwise he would have fallen unconscious immediately. “Save yourself, Trix!!”
“NOT A CHANCE!!” she screamed, lunging forward at the beast without so much as a second thought. She wasn't letting her partner die. She wasn't letting her husband die. She wasn't letting her love die. Not like this. Not today!
Her shortsword sparked with a purple current, a strange magic enveloping it. The same happened to the arm that held it.
“I'm sorry, Pix…” Mumbling this, she flew right by the beast’s mouth and slashed away, grabbing the tiny man a second later. He opened his eyes and saw her determined face as she was flying away, holding him in his arms while the beast swallowed what remained in its mouth. He looked down, only to see his leg was cleanly cut off right at his thigh. Everything below was missing.
“I'm sorry,” Trix said with tears in her eyes, not slowing down. “There was no other way…”
“You saved my life,” he smiled, wincing as the pain started kicking in. “What more could I possibly want of you?”
The beast wasn't done pursuing them, though. It quickly realized that what it had just eaten wasn't the entire thing. Letting out a furious roar, it started running after them once more, continuing its path of destruction. Because one of them now carried the other, their flight was slowed and it was rapidly gaining on them.
The winged girl landed next to a large tree and gently placed her injured counterpart down unto the moss-covered ground, leaning his back against the tree trunk. She turned around towards the approaching beast and drew her shortsword once more.
“What…are you doing?!” he hissed between clenched teeth. “Get…away from here!”
“Not a chance, sweetheart,” she smiled and took off her visor hat, throwing it away. Her entire body got enveloped in the same strange magic current from before.
“Now come to mommy, baby bear!” a crazy grin painted itself across her face. “And DIE!”
“Don't…” he winced, trying to push himself up on his one leg. “It's going…to kill you…”
“I don't care if this is this end…so I will use everything!!” she shouted, glaring at the beast that had just come to a stop and was ready to strike down at them. “Prepare to…”
“Light Bombardment!!” a voice yelled and several orbs of light struck the creature in rapid succession, making it groan and stumble. A strong burst of air hit it right afterwards, succeeding in toppling it over to the side.
As soon as it did, another monstrous creature came running at it, albeit much smaller, ramming its spear into the beast's exposed stomach while letting out a ferocious battle cry. “We've got it where we want it now, kid!! BLAST IT!!”
A couple more light and air spells hit the toppled over ursa major and a girl with a pointy hat came running out from the bushes. “WOOOOOO!!! LET'S FUCKING GOOOOO!!!”
The magic current enveloping Trix powered down and she lowered her sword as she watched the daring pair attack the beast that growled and flailed on the ground, throwing the man away and trying to bite at the girl who literally disappeared after shouting “Light Veil!”
“Who are these goddamn maniacs?” Trix spoke under her breath, before turning towards her bleeding, half-conscious partner. “Let's get out of here! This is our chance!”
Once again, she hoisted him up and flew off, finding shelter beneath the leaf of an enormous fern while the ferocious man and crazy girl took on the beast.
“Are you…are you alright?” she spoke, brushing the pitch-black hair out of the injured man's face. This was a rhetorical question really. He was missing a leg and was bleeding heavily.
“It's…been worse,” he chuckled, lifting his head up and wincing immediately after.
“You're an idiot…” the girl with dirty-blonde hair stared down at him, her wings glistening in the sunlight that was seeping through the branches above them. Her bright blue eyes were filled with tears that rebounded the comforting rays of the sun. She kissed him.
“Leave me…” he spoke quietly after their lips parted, earning a scornful glare from her.
“Fucking dumbass…you're not dying today! Not on my watch! As your superior, I forbid it!”
With that, she took out a tiny flask from the pocket of her black shorts and poured a liquid onto the spot where she had cut off his leg to save him from the beast's iron bite. He winced.
“Stay still. It's not going to heal it completely…but it will stop the bleeding at least a bit.”
She took off her belt and tied it around the upper half of his thigh, squeezing it tightly to further stop the blood from gushing out. Coupled with the liquid she had poured onto his wound, this stopped the bleeding almost entirely.
“There,” she said, observing her work. “Now you're not going to bleed out on me.”
“Thanks,” he huffed, the pain still very much present. He saw her smiling face in a blur and forced himself to smile back. “Trix…I love you. More than anything.”
“I love you too, Pix,” she replied, kissing him again. “But don't act like this is goodbye! Because it's not! I will get you back home safe and sound, you'll see!”
“We're so far away,” he shook his head. “You can't carry me that far…it's weeks away…”
“ARGHH!” a painful grunt was heard from afar and she turned in that direction.
“UNCLE GROGAR!!” the girl's voice yelled. “WATCH OUT!!”
“Maybe I should go help them…” Trix mumbled. “They did save us, after all.”

“You can't…” her partner shook his head, holding his pulsating leg with both arms. “Remember…the code! We can't be seen…by outsiders…”
She didn't listen to him, however, standing up and flapping her wings. “Screw the code…”
“Trix!! That counts as treason! Don't…do this! Please!”
But Trix was already on her way and didn't hear his calls. She found her visor hat lying in the dirt not far away from their previous position. The growls, grunts, and shouts fell silent. She flew up and saw the crazy girl from before kneeling next to the large man's body as he lay flat on his back, drawing heavy breath.
“Uncle Grogar!” Velvet held his enormous hand in both of hers. She was crying. “Get up!”
“I'm not as young…as I used to be,” he coughed, blood pooling beneath him. “You did well, little one. It was me who messed it up. And I got the claws for it…that's just how it is here…”
There was a large open wound on his chest, four gigantic cuts going across it. The beast had left its mark before running off to mend its wounds.
“I don't want to lose you.” The girl's tears trickled down on his tired and scarred face. “You still have to teach me so many things! We still have to go on so many adventures!”
Grogar lifted his arm, cupping not only her cheek, but her entire head in the palm of it, and smiled. “This last year…has been the best year of my life…and it's all because of you, my dear. Thank you, Velvet. For making this old man's final days such a delight.”
He turned his head to the right and saw Trix standing not far away, holding her hat in front of her in both hands as she observed them with a sad look on her face.
“Look…” Grogar chuckled, “…a fairy. I told you…they do exist…”
Saying this, he closed his eyes and drifted off into a deep, cold sleep.
“Uncle Grogar!” Velvet cried, shaking his hand. “UNCLE GROGAR!!”
It took a minute or two for her to calm down and realize what just transpired. She slowly placed his large hand down on his chest and collapsed back onto a rock behind her, sitting in silence and staring at the unmoving man before her.
“I'm sorry…” she heard a soft voice say from behind and turned around, seeing the strange creature walking closer to her. “I wanted to help you two…but it looks like I'm too late…”
“Wh-who are you?” the girl sniffled. “Are you r-really…a fairy?”I'm
“Yes,” the tiny girl nodded. “I am.” She came closer, sat on the rock beside Velvet, and put her visor hat back on. They sat in silence, mourning the loss of the girl's beloved uncle together. After a while, the fairy spoke.
“I can see he meant a lot to you, this man. One does not cry tears like that for just anyone.”
“He taught me everything I know about hunting,” Velvet replied and wiped her eyes. “Really, he was like a second father to me. I know all the paths in this forest because of him. All the creatures that dwell in here and where to find them. How to cure every poison. Everything.”
“And he had a good heart, it seems,” Trix added. “Even though he doesn't look like it.”
Velvet smiled through her tears. “He really was a good man. Just misunderstood. Other hunters thought he was crazy. Heck, even I started thinking that when he was telling me about how he's seen fairies around these parts! But now,” she looked at the sprite sitting next to her, “I see that he was no fool after all. So he was right about you still existing?”
“He was,” the fairy smiled up at her. A smile that quickly faded when she saw fresh tears streaking down the human’s face as she was staring at the dead man before them. “I guess now is not the best time for introductions,” the sprite gathered. “We should give him a proper burial. He deserves it.”
Velvet nodded in agreement, wiping her tears with her sleeve. “The forest was his home,” she spoke with a trembling voice. “He would have wanted to rest here.”
“I’ll help you,” Trix offered without hesitation. “It’s the least I can do for you after you and your uncle basically saved us.”
“Us?” the human asked in confusion. “There’s more of you?”
Suddenly, the fairy recoiled back so fiercely that it even startled the crying girl. “PIX!!”
“Hm?” Velvet lifted her head up, revealing her tear-stained eyes. “W-who's Pix?”
“Pix is my husband and companion!” the fairy yelled out while flying off. “He's hurt badly!”
The young witch took another glance at her deceased uncle and forced herself back to her feet, following the fairy. “I'm going to give you a proper burial,” she told him before walking away. Not far from there, she saw Trix descend into the undergrowth and found her shaking an unconscious fairy that was missing one of its legs. “Pix! Pix wake up!” she shouted.
“How did he lose a leg?” Velvet asked after staring at her frantically trying to slap him back to his senses. “The ursa took it! He's lucky to be alive!” the distressed fairy yelled.
“Oh. So that's what those screams were…” Velvet quickly deduced. “I thought I was just imagining it, because there was nobody else here when we attacked it. But it did seem like it was going after something. So it was you guys.”
Trix nodded, her eyes filled with tears as she finally stopped shaking Pix after checking his heartbeat. “Ah, thank goodness, he’s still alive!” she exhaled in relief and turned towards Velvet. “You saved us, actually. If you two didn't attack it when you did, both of us would probably wind up dead!”
The human smiled, but only slightly. “Grogar would have been glad to hear that. All his life he's been trying to catch a fairy. Now he ended up saving the lives of two of them.”
“Thank you,” Trix said. “Pix may have lost his leg, but he will live. I stopped the bleeding more or less with a healing potion and this.” She moved away a bit to reveal her belt squeezing his thigh tightly. “He's just unconscious due to the pain most likely.”
“I'm glad,” Velvet replied and held out her hand, leaning forward so the fairy could reach it. “I’m Velvet,” she said quietly.
Thank you for reading this part of the story! As always, you rock!

Did you know? The reason fairy wings glisten is because they are made of very thin crystals. Similar to dracon horns, they keep growing throughout a fairy's life. That's why old fairies have large and beautiful wings, while younger ones have wings that resemble a dragonfly.
