### Chapter 6: Night Fiends

These creatures were cloaked in a greasy, dark fur, with a layer of soft down. They had round heads with large ears, resembling ordinary bats but measuring over half a meter in size. Notably, their faces lacked eyes and mouths, instead featuring a strange nose and a needle-like proboscis.

Night Fiends.

These creatures were not native to this world, much like the sulfuric beetles seen earlier. They emerged from dimensional rifts and bore another name—Night Demons.

Though they resembled bats, their feeding habits were more akin to mosquitoes. They used their sharp proboscises to pierce their prey and suck their blood for nourishment.

A Night Demon can consume the blood of up to five adults a day. Greedy and grotesque, they are also social creatures, often found in groups ranging from a few to dozens.

Their hunting method is peculiar. Lacking eyes, they cannot hunt by sight. Instead, while flying, they disperse urine over a wide area. This urine carries a scent that, combined with their severely degenerated sense of smell, helps them track prey in the dark.

This eerie predation—sowing during the day, feeding at night—earned them the moniker of Night Demons.

"What’s happening?"

Chen Feng's voice was low as he watched the flickering shadows at the door. These creatures, lacking eyes and ears, shouldn’t have been able to follow him here.

When he left the arena, he was certain he hadn't encountered any Night Demons. Yet, now these Night Demons were attacking the convenience store!

"Wait…"

Chen Feng paused, slowly turning to the frightened girl beside him. She was visibly terrified, her eyes reflecting horror.

Chen Feng had confirmed that he hadn’t encountered Night Demons, but there were now two people in the store.

Initially, Chen Feng thought the marks on the girl’s neck were abrasions. However, a closer look revealed that the discoloration was more likely a dye. Chen Feng lowered his head and sniffed gently, his pupils narrowing.

"Urine stench!"

The mystery was solved. The girl had mentioned encountering flying monsters, clearly referring to the Night Demons. She had been contaminated with their urine, leading them here.

"Don’t…"

The girl screamed in terror as Chen Feng’s actions were misconstrued. He had torn her clothes and was sniffing her skin, making her feel violated. Distracted by the immediate threat, she cried out.

"Let go of me… I’ll call for help… You’ll be caught…"

"Snap!"

Chen Feng twisted his neck.

The girl's voice abruptly ceased as her nerves were damaged, and she fell unconscious. Her body crumpled to the floor, her face still frozen in panic. This sudden turn was beyond her expectations—she never imagined Chen Feng would knock her out.

Chen Feng took a few steps, grabbing a pair of scissors from a nearby shelf without hesitation. He sliced across the girl's shoulder, blood streaming down her neck.

The Night Demons' degenerated sense of smell couldn’t detect the original scent on her.

Blood!

This would mask the girl’s scent.

In such a situation, Chen Feng had two choices: First, to summon the lesser demon and fight the Night Demons, protecting the girl but risking a larger crisis and exposing his location to other predators. Second, to protect himself by cutting the girl's body to obscure her scent.

Without hesitation, Chen Feng chose the latter, quickly rendering the girl unconscious and using her blood to cover her scent.

Heartless?

The store was not secure. Even without Chen Feng, the Night Demons would have drained the girl’s blood, leading to her death. The mark left on her was a grim certainty.

Yet, now…

Her injury was minor, and her life was spared—this was fortune in misfortune!

Pity was irrelevant here. Try to show pity to the monsters outside, weep, and see if they spare you.

This world is cruel, constantly fraught with danger. Death comes from starvation, zombie attacks, conflict, or illness.

Survival of the fittest;

It’s a simple truth.

"Bang…"

The store door was struck again. The Night Demons hesitated, having sensed prey inside.

The pungent smell of blood had worked.

Chen Feng made a mark with his hand. Caution didn’t mean cowardice; if the Night Demons forced their way in, he would have to fight.

However, the Night Demons only struck a few times before ceasing. Their low intelligence and the masked scent quickly redirected them.

Once Chen Feng was sure the Night Demons had left, he sat down. He had little time to rest; he needed to regain his strength before nightfall.

The girl lay aside, pale from blood loss.

Chen Feng couldn’t take her with him. In this perilous apocalypse, while she had survived one threat, countless dangers lurked in every corner.

She might die.

But this was the apocalypse.

Such things were perfectly normal.
