1. Prologue

Prologue:

Uncounted millennia ago, the ancients wandered the earth, erecting their cities, and granting the gift of magic, to preyed upon species, the physically weak humans and all its cousins. However, one critical day, a war, waged between two ideologies in the race split the world apart. Humanity and its cousins barely survived the collateral damage, by the time they emerged from hiding, As records of the ancients dwindled with time, the ruins became buried under earth, were seen more and more like treasure-filled dungeons.

Third-person POV

-Crack-

The sound of thunder sent the village hounds whimpering with tails between their legs. The rain was pouring down on the valley, humble farmhouses dotted the riverside, smoke rising from the chimneys. The village tavern was packed full of patrons, travelers, mercenaries, and adventurers seeking fortune in the nearby dungeon. The sound of the rain battering the roof was barely audible over the hollers and laughter of the men, the smell of ale and roasted meats saturated the air.

“Hey! Get another us another round over here!” Some man bellowed at the barmaid, then continued to inflate his accomplishments to his comrades.

The rustic door opened, letting in the humid and chilling air, a hooded figure stepped in. Wearing a robe drenched in rain, carrying what appears to be a sword wrapped in linen.

“Bastard, close the door already, can’t a man get a warm place once in a while?.” a mercenary called out.

The new customer kicked the door shut, maneuvering the way between the crowded tables to the front desk. Laid down 20 coppers for the owner, gesturing for one of the last room keys on the wall. A single word was not exchanged; the figure simply grabbed the key and made off to the assigned room.

As the room was opened, a chair, a bed, and wardrobe with a well-used candle was all that existed. A sigh of disappointment? Or was it relief? The drenched robe was thrown on to the chair. As the figure threw itself on to the bed, already falling into the sweetness of the land of dreams.

Riley POV

“Why, do I have to get up, can’t I stay in for a little while?”

“No, get up, its already noon.”

“But… Please?..”

“No.”

“Do you know how much I want to throw you away sometimes?”

“Do you know how much I hate being leaned against the bed?”

I reached out from underneath the fur blankets, grabbed the linen-wrapped sword leaning against

the bed, then threw it across the floor.

“I’m still not gonna let you stay in bed”

“Fine!”

“Hurry up, and take the robe, we don’t want anyone to see your hair and eyes.”

“Yes, yes, I swear, you are like a mom.”

Flinging the blankets away, I grabbed my robe, thankfully it dried off. Threw it on, I really hate how it makes me look like a male. Leaving the rented room, I pass by the remnants of last night, roughly a dozen matured adult men, passed out on the tavern floor, chuckling at the sight. I left the key in the deposit, and stepped outside the inn.
