"The New Heir"

"The New Heir"

After that day, my mother started becoming less and less energetic. She lost interest in our favorite games, and her smile became weaker and more distant.

The months passed, and I studied hard, but I couldn't ignore the change in my mother. Her stomach had started to grow bigger and rounder. At first, I thought she was just gaining weight, but she wasn’t eating much, so I jumped next to her and asked, “Mom, what’s wrong with your stomach?”

She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she chuckled softly and patted me on the head. “It’s something that all mothers love…” she said, her voice angelic.

I placed my hand on her mouth, teasing her as I ran away playfully. I loved playing, so I grabbed one of my notebooks, looked at my scribbles, and said, “Love!”

She smiled and shook her head, replying, “Close, but no.”

Instantly, I shot back, “Child!” And this time, she nodded.

My mother gently touched her belly and said, “I’m pregnant, Kael. You’ll have a sibling.”

I froze. My hand instinctively moved to touch her belly, and a chill ran through me. It was the same feeling I had years ago when I first felt the weight of something precious. Another treasure would be born.

I smiled happily, gazing at my mother without saying a word.

I continued studying and drawing, practicing math, and it was fun at times. But my mother’s fun seemed to stop. I saw it was becoming harder for her to move. She was always surrounded by her maids now, sweating often, and spending more time lying down.

My father would come to her often, planting a soft kiss on her belly, waiting for the next heir.

And then, it happened.

One week, I heard my mother calling out for help. A guard grabbed my shoulder and said, in a calm, firm voice, “Stay here. It’s important you don’t disturb her.”

I froze. His grip was strong but gentle, like a warning, and I knew what was happening. I could hear my mother’s voice, and I knew she was in pain, but I trusted her maids to take care of her. So, I stayed back.

I sat down, listening to the sounds of her pain mixed with the calm instructions from the maids. The hours dragged on, but then, I heard it: “Congratulations…”

I rushed into the room and found my mother lying in bed, dressed in soft clothes. One of her maids was holding a small baby in her hands.

I stared at it. The baby didn’t have my boy things.

I have a sister.
