Chapter 04 - Showtime

Chapter 04 - Showtime

While stepping into the office, Frank instantly feels three pairs of tough eyes shooting on him.

The one wearing the white toga with a narrow purple stripe, he should be the commissioner, um, the middle aged man with black uniform, could be Rome Vigile ... Wow hell, how the girl could be so pretty ... is she married?

Taking a peep at her breast then, which calms Frank a lot instantly.

He bows head quickly with a very humble attitude.

Grant already sits on the official chair with a ruthless face, and then speaks solemnly:

"Frank Sun, three days ago when you were imprisoned, you didn't mention that you have important clues. Do you know it is illegal to conceal case information on purpose?"

Typical bureaucrat, pressure first rather than ask for clues straight even desperate for help.

Frank is quite calm at this point.

My plan is half way done since I am able to come here.

He says:” Sir, my cousin just came to me, and I asked him for the case dossier."

Be honest first.

The trio on the scene all know Alexander Sun, not because his fame, but the result of investigation on family background of Marcus.

“How it is related with the clue you mentioned?" Grant asks.

"I got the truth of the case from the dossier through reasoning ..."

"Wait," Grant interrupts him, leaning forward slightly: "From the dossier?"

It's different with what he anticipates.

"I've solved the case." Frank nods, indicating what he heard is correct.

Grant suppresses the thought of calling jailers to send the kiddo back to the prison, and his face becomes grim: "All right, tell us how it happened, but I have to remind you, if you dare to lie or talk nonsense, there will be no less than 200 whips waiting for you."

"The case is actually not done by monsters, but human being."

It shocks all three people in the office immediately.

Grant punches the table and shouts angrily: "that is a bullshit, John, call the jailer, give him 200 whips now."

It is almost a certain conclusion that the monster robs the tax, which is the consensus of the three superintendents.

If Grant expected Frank to provide some valuable clues, he is completely disappointed now.

It's nothing more than the non sensible rhetoric from a scared but crazy young man.

Claudio's eyes become bright slightly, and he waves hands to let the coming officer leave, "Commissioner Grant, let him finish it."

He turns his burning vision on Frank with question and expectation: "Tell us about it."

The commissioner is a little grumpy .... Frank knows it is time for him to perform, "According to the testimony, my uncle was going to start foot at 6 am, and the escorting team arrived at 7:30 am. At this point, a strange wind suddenly came, and the horses were frightened and dashed into the moat."

He attempted to calm himself down and keep his cadence casually to increase the persuasiveness.

Grant nods: "This is why we concluded that there are monsters lurking in the river and then robbing the tax."

"No!" Frank retorts loudly: "The gust is just a blindfold, and the same as the explosion in the river, they are designed to let you ignore a point, a crucial point."

Grant hurriedly asks, "What point?"

Claudio starts to listen carefully.

Jessica contains the date in mouth without chewing, and gazes at Frank with vigorous eyes, seems she gets interested in what Frank says.

They read the dossier multiple times, and almost knew every single detail about the process, but they did not notice any other important information.

"My uncle escorted 18 million denarii, how many pounds do you think they weight?"

Claudio seems into ponder, while Jessica tilts her head and doesn't return for a while.

Grant says with displeasure: "No time for riddle kid."

Frank just wants to give them a hint so they could figure it out by themselves, but it seems counterproductive.

Ancient guys are really not good at the quick calculation ... Frank immediately answers: "It's 180,159 pounds."

According to the weight of a deranii(4.54 grams) in Rome Empire age, it should be 81,720 kilograms in total, a pound equals to about 0.4536 kilograms, so the total weight is about 180,159 pounds.

Claudio frowns a little, he vaguely grasps some points.

Jessica is still confused: "What does this mean?"

Her voice is as crispy as a silver bell.

It means that you are not very smart, girl!

Frank continues, "How far is it from the last post station to South Gate?"

Claudio replies, "about 30 miles."

"How many villages did they pass through on the way?"

"...Four."

"How far the horse is able to march per hour with all the denarii loaded?"

"Horse ..." Claudio suddenly opens his eyes widely and stand up.

He broadens his eyes hard, showing a stunned face with a speechless expression 'It turns out to work like this'.

No any clue After three days of tracking and hunting the monsters, as an experienced vigile, Claudio has already realized that he might be on the wrong direction.

But he has no clear idea about what happened on earth, so he does not pay too much attention on it after the first denial from Grant.

Grant feels a little numb, because he still doesn't get the point, which makes him kinda incompetent as a commissioner of capital police department.

But then he feels a little balanced after glancing at Jessica.

Jessica feels quite blue, "Where is the problem?"

Claudio is a little excited: "The time, the time is not right."

"the last post station is 30 miles away from the South City Gate, they started at 6 am and even passed 4 villages which would slow down movement for sure, so there is no way for them to arrive in front of South Gate in one and half hour with such a heavy load convoyed by horses."

He is influenced by preconceived conclusion, assume that it is the monster who robs the tax, and soon realize the problem with Frank’s hint.

"But the tax was indeed delivered to South Gate at 7:30 am. There were a lot of bystanders who saw horses rushing into the river. It can't be fake." Jessica mumbles with crispy voice.

Grant nods with satisfaction, and agrees: "She is right, how to explain that?"

....

Claudio is stuck, and glances at Frank subconsciously.

"Because what is delivered is not deranii at all." Frank speaks loudly.

"Ridiculous!" Grant retorts: "Lets just ignore if your uncle and all followers are so negligent that they don’t even check the chests handed over to them, the case file contains the testimony of all people on scene, ‘the horses ran into the moat, and the tax, countless silver coins rolled into the river."

He lifts the dossier in his hand: "Is this also fake?"

"Well sometimes what you see may not be what you think, Sir ... let me help you figure it out," Frank looks at the table. “may I borrow the quill and reel Sir?”

Grant waves his hand, indicating that he could help himself.

Frank shuffles to the table, spreads out the reel and starts to write.

"Here you go, sir, please prepare the materials list on reel." he hands over the reel to Grant after completion.

Grant takes a quick look at the reel with full confusion.

"Let me see what is it." Jessica steps forward and takes the reel with snow white fingers.

Then she gets perplexed as well.

"..." Claudio takes a glance at the reel with an unemotional face, then flattens the folded corner of the reel, and hands it back to Grant.
