A wave of darkness followed me as I jumped on my hov-board. Gritting my teeth I slam my foot down on the accelerator and whoop as I shoot forward. No matter where I am or what I’m doing, I will always love that feeling of speed. I swerved to the side to avoid a rusted beam that jetted from the ground. The board squeals in protest as I try to speed up. I have an older style board without a wing and without the turbo jet so any move I make causes the whole board to shutter like it is going to blow up. I look at the monitor on my wrist and grunt as I see the charge left on my board. I duck lower and my board scrapes against the ground as I twist around and jump through the searing heat of the light wall that separates the safe zone from the darkness. As I look back at the wave, I see something strange with it, like there is someone inside of it. I scoop up my board and strap it to my back where it bumps against my pack with a loud clunking sound. I lift my wrist and check my coms-watch.
“You have a message from Espen, would you like me to read it to you?” I pop my buds in and answer.
“Yes, standby for a reply.” I pull up my hov-screen and type a reply as I get Espen's message.
“Yo where you at, the patrols are out on a sweep and you need to get here right now.” The patrols started when a few kreachurs crossed the breach. At one point the patrols protected us but now they harass citizens and destroy property.
“Why are they doing a sweep?” They haven’t done a sweep since the last kreachurs came through, so there was no reason for them to be making a sweep. I swipe the text screen aside and pull up a map, then I pull up a keyboard and start hacking into the mainframe. A swipe here and a swipe there and then, three glowing green dots appear on the map. The Patrol was coming closer and they were closing in fast. Cursing, I slam my board down and blast upwards toward the rooftops. Suddenly, I heard a pinging sound and swerved as a concuss blast rocked the streets below me. I cursed again and ducked lower on my board. Then I twisted and leaped over a chimney but my board started whining and shuddering.

“No, no, no, no, not again!” I growl and leap off my board while swinging my board back onto my back. There were Patrolmen blasting up to the rooftops to join me. I pulled up a shield from my watch, grabbed a blade from my back, and flick my wrist to extended the blade to its full size. Now I was holding a full sized blade-staff that I twirled around with ease. There was a crackling sound as a bullet lodged itself in my shield.
“Oh so you want to play it that way then do you?” I laugh as I pluck the bullet out of my shield and sweep my blade down to leave a gouge in the roof below me.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” I swing the blade over my head and grin, bringing it down to rest beside me.
“Well?” I flip my middle finger up and smirk. They roared as one and charged at me with their plasma-tons. I grunt and swing my staff at the nearest patrol man, he backed up and snarled. Then I flicked the blade up and sheared the plasma-ton in half. There was a concussive blast as it exploded and sent everyone off the roof. My head slammed into the wall and I saw stars
“Espen I need help, my board broke in half and I may or may not have a concussion.” Espen snorted
“I can’t say I’m surprised, I’ll send you the address of a safe house close by.” I flicked my fingers and opened his message.
“Well, it might take some work but I think I can make it there without getting caught, are there tools to fix my hov-board?” Espen laughed
“Your board is so old that they don’t even make the parts for it anymore, but there is an extra hov-board stored in the garage.” I end the call without saying goodbye and swipe my hov-screen away.
