Benjamin David was your average, run of the mill loner. He still lived with his mother even though he was twenty-five year's old. His father, Richard David, left them when he was still a toddler. His memories of school would always leave him with depression. He was a straight A student that was offered numerous scholarships and seemed to have a limitless future. Alas, he was always awkward around others and was bullied throughout his academic career. He was completely unable to face others and spent majority of his time playing video games and reading wuxia novels. The day he graduated was the day he disappeared from the public and rarely left his home.
"Mom, it's eleven-thirty." Benjamin said as he downed a glass of orange juice and ran upstairs to his room.
"Are you expecting anything in the mail today, Ben?" His mother responded as she walked into the kitchen.
"No, not today. " Benjamin replied as he walked to his room.
Even though his father left them when he was young, his mother never gave up. She finished and received her degree. She worked as a electrical engineer for a computer company. Even though the work load was tough she never stopped supporting ben.
Ben's room was filled with posters of anime, a few bookcases covered with his favorite books and his computer or in his mothers words "his other half". He spent majority of his time playing MMO's and helping his favorite web novel authors by working as an editor.
"Ben, you have a Letter down here, it's from some of your old classmates." His mom called up the the stairs. Ben's room was the only one on the top floor and to save his mother the struggle of climbing up the set of stairs while mentally drained, so he took the room upstairs and she took the only room downstairs. They lived in a large urban city, inside of a small to roomed house.
"I'll be down in a minute. " Ben said as he finished booting up his computer.
"I'll leave it down stairs on the counter." His mom replied. She worked constantly and had very little free time.
Ben walked into the kitchen and picked up the letter.
"What do these plebeians want? " Ben said as he opened the letter.
Dear, Benjamin
We the class of 2019 would like to invite you to the five year anniversary of our graduation.
Location: community center Time: 5:00 PM Date: April 13, 2024
Sincerely, class rep Tyler Hill
"A reunion, huh, why did they invite me? I mostly avoided everyone, I didn't even attend the graduation." Ben said as he tried to think of why he was invited.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
"What, are you to afraid to go? I didn't know you where that big of a chicken." His mom said as she laughed.
"What are you doing back?" Ben asked as he attempted to not scream out in anger.
"I forgot my purse so I came back here to get it." She said while still laughing.
"What reason would they have of inviting me of all people? I talked as little as possible and barely interacted with anyone, so who would choose to invite me?" Ben asked as he continued to think about it and became even more confused.
"Don't think about too much. You are part of the 2019 class after all. Just don't think and go the worse thing that would happen would be you there without anyone to talk to and from what you just said that is something you don't have to worry about." She said as she grabbed her purse and left to her car.
"It is tomorrow and I don't have anything to do, not to mention my computer will need to install a large update." Ben said as he walked back to his room.
He started playing another MMO, he normally beats the main quest line as soon as possible and then goes through and completes the side quest. Normally if your unable to complete a quest then you would team up with someone else to complete that quest but Ben is such a loner that even in video games, he doesn't talk to others. This has made a debate in the community on his age and gender considering he never speaks.
He went to sleep that night after having to wipe out an entire twenty man squad that tried to kill him and steal his gear. It took him until 3:00 AM to return to an inn so that he could log out without worrying about being killed while he wasn't on. He woke up the next day at 2:00 PM, he showered, brushed his teeth and then checked his phone for any notifications.
"Ugh, should I take take the subway or should I just drive myself? " Ben said as he walked into the kitchen.
"First, go change into a tux. This is a formal event so dress like it. What, don't tell me Mr. Genius didn't know this. " His mom said as she walked into the kitchen.
"What is wrong with a simple T-shirt and jeans? More importantly why are you here?" Ben raged as he raised his hand in time to catch the object his mother tossed to him.
"Don't wreck again and go change. It's supposed to be my day off so I'm going back to sleep, good luck. " She said as she walked back to her room.
Ben walked back upstairs to his room where he struggled to get into a tux. He then ran down the stairs to the front door and ran straight to the car parked at the curb. He then proceeded to drive ten blocks to the community center, which was covered with decorations.
"Why are there so many people here? Why are there no parking spots?" Ben whined as he parked at the restaurant next to the building.
"Let's get this over with." Ben sighed as he entered the building.
Ben was met with different groups of people crowded together chatting. He recognized a group that he was familiar with from computer science.
"Hey, how have you all been?" Ben said with the most natural smile he could make.
"Didn't expect to see you here Ben. We have been good, oops, I meant amazing, did you get the invitation?" A slim black haired man said as he avoided the elbow of the red haired woman next to him.
"Invitation?" Ben asked.
"You didn't hear about Noah and Megan getting married? " A teacher that wore a button up flannel shirt a and glasses with unkempt hair, asked as he walked closer.
"Mr. Hawkins, I'm shocked your still not retired. No, I have been busy and haven't really worked on my social life. " Ben said as he faced Mr. Hawkins.
"Well, your just in time for the main event of this evening. We need you to come behind stage for a moment." Mr. Hawkins said as he lead Ben to the stage and behind the curtains at the back of the room. The community center was a large one roommate building with a stage that was used for community events.
"What's going on?" Ben said as he walked towards Mr. Hawkins and neglected to watch what was going on behind him.
"Just a simple reality check." Mr. Hawkins said as he turned around.
Before he could react someone came behind Ben and covered his face with a cloth. The already dark area started to spin and Ben fell to the ground and passed out.
Ben awoke to a stage where he was duct taped to a chair with a spot light overhead shining down on him and the worst thing was the fact that he was surrounded by the people he went to school with and the stage he was on was none other than the one in the community center.
"What's going on? What are you people doing?" Ben screamed as he struggled against the tape.
"As I said before, we are all here to give a much needed reality check. For none other than you, Benjamin David." Mr. Hawkins said as he duct taped Ben's mouth shut.
"Now, here is how this will work. We will list all of the things you are doing wrong, then you will listen and then decide how you are going to change it. Who is going to go first? " Mr. Hawkins asked.
"We will" Noah said as he and Megan walked onto the stage.
