0. Renewal

 Chapter 0: Renewal

Beyond the tall peaks of the Balros mountain range lies a charred and war-ravaged land. A place filled with none else than the bodies of friend and foe, broken hopes, and promises forgotten beneath the bloodied soil. Fresh bodies, clad in armor broken beyond recognition, lie on the ground, ready to join generations of soldiers before them. Cries of agony and the smell of burning flesh permeate the air, as a small army saunters away, victorious after a hard fought war.

Amidst the charred and blackened bodies lies a small shape, a body broken and cleaved, burned to the point of what many would consider to be inhumane. Fragments of metal akin to links can be seen surrounding the strange mass. The battlefield lies silent around this shape. Quiet. Not a single sound can be heard despite the loud cheering of the soldiers led by cloaked figures steadily moving away.

A flower blooms amidst this carnage. Soaked in the blood of many throughout countless years. This flower, crimson in color, lies over one particular blackened corpse. The flower seems to lean over, shedding a single droplet of blood red liquid as if it were a tear upon this blackened corpse.

When the liquid touched the body, a beautiful red light began to shine whilst the liquid seeped into the body. Only after a few moments pass does the light dim before disappearing entirely. The body appears to lie dormant, still, devoid of life, yet, something has changed. A pulse, not one within the body but one outside, begins to throb in a rhythmic pattern. Slow at first, but gradually growing with time only to fade once more. The process repeats itself once more moments later, and again later. This cycle continues, time passes, and if one were to view this, they would simply have nothing to say.

The grass around the flower and the body begins to change, slowly at first but increasing in mass and speed every time the cycle repeats itself. The blood from the ground seeps through the thin roots of the plants, turning the grass from their once dead state to a deep menacing red. The blackened mass at the epicenter of these strange events begins to glow with a soft light, charred skin and blackened flesh peeling off every rhythmic beat. When the twin moons hang in the sky, overlooking the barren grounds, a patch of bloodied grass and a glowing white skeleton can be seen. Floating within the ribcage of this skeleton was a blood red orb, presumably the liquid from the flower.

Under the twin moons does the flower truly bloom, a deep red light spread from the flower, engulfing the entire battlefield in its crimson glory. All at once, the corpses strewn around the battlefield flatten at an alarming rate. A clearly conspicuous stream of blood trails from each corpse towards the blood red orb within the skeleton. The blood is absorbed in vast amounts, hungrily devoured by the orb as more and more light is released from the flower. More corpses are flattened, blood which once trickled toward the orb now rapidly racing to be devoured. Only after the twin moons set does the process finally finish. The once crimson light now shines a brilliant scarlet, retracted towards the flower as it begin to shed its petals. The flower wilts, power expended, scatters into ashes, blown away in a sudden gust.

The mysterious flower gone, all that lies left in the once corpse covered field is the body of a single girl. Unmarred white skin and short black hair, the young girl laid amidst the pools of blood leftover from the events that transpired earlier. Only after a while does the girl open her eyes, scarlet and lifeless as they are. Her mouth moving slightly yet no sound comes from it. She lies there, unable to speak, but able to think.

‘Who am I?’

The girl was confused. She should be dead, never to see that hell ever again. She shouldn’t be alive. She shouldn’t exist. Yet, she is able to think.

‘What a nice sky.’

The twin moons had set but the sun approaches the sky in their place. A deep orange glow can be seen from where she lied, beyond the mountain peaks in the distance. A small smile appears on her face at this sight.

‘What a nice day to die.’

She ponders as to why she thought that. Shouldn’t she already be dead after all? If so, why is she alive again? She lifts her fingers towards her face, thinking, wondering, yet she cannot find the answer she seeks. Her sharp nails dragging lines across her face, the acute pain waking up her once sleeping brain. She could remember, CAN remember, the burning pain. A sharp pain across her waist followed by the lack of sensation from her bottom half. All she can remember from then was countless piercing knives enveloping her body. Her body begin to shake, before progressing into her body uncontrollably flailing around, splashing blood everywhere.

She remembers. The faces of the ones who did this to her. She remembers them all. The rage and feelings of betrayal once forgotten within her bursts out, piercing her very being and engraving her purpose within her mind. The mad howls from the girl shakes the world around her.

‘Who am I?’

The girl scoffs at her question. A sharp cold voice responds to the madness within her.

“Who am I? I am the victim.”

‘So what?’

“They will pay… All of them.”

‘You know you cannot win.’

“Then I will wait. They will not know. They will never know.”

‘Then what?’

“I strike. Nothing can stop me. Not even Him.”

‘Very well.’

The once human girl lets out an ear piercing laugh, causing anyone to hear it to feel their bones and flesh ice over. A primordial fear within all beings embodied by the voice of a small girl with Scarlet Eyes.
