Unknown Planet
On a random planet, in an unknown galaxy, some may be surprised to see humans inhabiting the galaxy. However, even these humans have not discovered space flight technology, nonetheless it was much more advanced. Giant skyscrapers with multiple tiers, bridges crisscrossing and intersecting in multiple odd grids. Flying cars and odd trapezoid shaped shuttles zoom across the skyscrapers in the sky. Looking down the depths seem nearly infinite.
This was a former mining site turned into a half underground half above ground city. It was less mining and more drilling into the crust of the planet. After ravaging the planet's surface for resources it is now a barren wasteland on the surface. Therefore, the only choice to get resources now was into the planet itself. The deep mining done here created a man-made moat of darkness around the city as the megaspire continued below, obscuring it in darkness.
However, this scarcity of resources also led to constant battles and skirmishes. Governments decided to hole in cities, leaving everyone outside the cities for themselves and declaring independence from the world. With the new found freedom they have, the government declared a draft on their cities.
In order to dodge these drafts many fled into the bottom half into these mega cities, getting lost in the massive under cities using the established gangs down there. However, of course the desperate many are bound to get taken advantage of, and with a war wrought history like this planet lost technology and histories was abound. Combining this with the desperate draft dodgers, they were the perfect willing or unwilling test subjects of such rediscovered technologies.
One such draft dodger was now dodging debt collectors.
Through winding corridors, long rickety walkways between skyscrapers, and dim neon light illuminated through foggy clouds a teen raced through alleys hoping to escape his pursuers.
“Look up there!” A thug on a lower walkway yelled up towards the walkway the teen was on. The teen cursed and immediately doubled his pace, swinging his arms and legs as fast as he could. He heard more thugs start gathering in the surrounding walkways in an attempt to surround him. He saw a light at the end of an alleyway and huffed towards his hopeful salvation and at the end of the alley he saw the light.
His world immediately turned upside down and instead of the world he just saw lights but as the vision returned, a voice hinted at the trainwreck he just felt like he hit.
“Argonne you little shit.” A deep feminine voice and rusted metal armour grinding together, creating a horrendous screech. An enforcer for the Rusted Joints, a scavenger gang that hid Argonne from the draft, then dragged him down horrendous debt to the point it's better to run than try to pay it back. She was made of pure muscle and despite being actually shorter than Argonne. That horrid rusted armour combined with her mass and muscles created an unstoppable force that just shoulder bashed him nearly up and over a walkway before landing back on a railing.
“You should’ve just been a good little boy, but you bitten the hand that feeds you.” She picked him up by the back of his collar but Argonne slipped out of the rags he called shirt and headbutted the only area that was exposed, her head. A satisfying crunch was heard as a broken nose and blood flowed from the wound. She reeled back in pain pushing Argonne back with a kick and Argonne weak as he stumbled. The depths of Scarce, this city he knew as hell, spiraling down below. He turned back from the precarious position and he saw the woman yell and charge him at the railing. Argonne tried to step to the side but failed as she clotheslined Argonne nearly off the railing, only holding on because Argonne refused to let go of the arm assaulting him.
“Try me, I've got nothing to live for, I'm willing to take you down with me!” He screamed, the rusted armour digging into his skin. Argonne started leaning back more trying to drag the arm with him over the edge. The enforcer attempted to free her hand from his grasp but a part of her scavenged leg armour got caught in the railing for a second, before tearing off tripping the enforcer, making her tumble over the edge taking Argonne with her.
Both looked at each other in disbelief before succumbing to the fear and screaming in fear. The other thugs saw the fall and just shook their heads and went back to their base. Mission failed.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
On the bottom of Scarce was just a rusted rotten disgusting junkyard. Mole-like Rust Diggers use the discarded junk at the bottom as burrows and the blind Junk Bats perch on precarious junk skyscrapers before swooping down on some rodent. The surrounding nature was suddenly disturbed and scattered as 2 bodies hit the piles of junk. The enforcer's body landed first disturbing a pile of junk that made a couple wires snap and fly, whipping Argonnes body. Argonne grunted in pain as he felt his body get nearly bisected by the cable. He felt his pelvis crack as his body tumbled down piles of junk before landing in a cloud of dust.
As the cloud of dust settled Argonne coughed in pain, blood splattering whatever's in front of him. Explosive pain hit him on his chest and as he looked down the sight instantly crushed him with reality. Despite the miracle of being alive, he wouldn’t be much longer. A piece of broken steel beam jutting out of a pile was now jutting out of his chest, with the dust fully gone he could even see his lower half of his body was turned 180 degrees. The pain was too much so he just looked up at the cold abyss staring down at him. A sad smile crept onto his face as he realized this would be the end, and it would be with no purpose.
“Do you wish for another chance?” A robotic voice echoed from below him. Argonne glanced down past his body and saw a rusted metal head talking to him, red eyes staring deep into his soul. At death's door, his eyes became the window into his soul and the robot’s stare felt like it was dissecting every emotion in his eyes. Argonne was in disbelief, but pushed on perhaps it was hysteria.
“Of course who wouldn’t?” Argonne croaked out. Argonne spat another glob of blood and the robot rust caked mouth cracked a smile. A pod opened up a bit below and to the right of where he was impaled currently and Argonne with as much strength tried giving the robot a confused look, too weak to do much else. The robot’s red eyes glared at the human before explaining.
“If you can push yourself off that spike and put yourself in that pod, you have a chance of surviving. No matter how wounded you are, it will miraculously heal any wound and stabilize you.” The pod looked pure sparkling white compared to the rust filled junkyard in the bottom. Even in the upper cities it was hard to find something so sterile.
“Don’t forget to struggle.” The cold wind picked up, sending the scent of stale bloody air in the air. After the sound of crying and screaming was heard as Argonne took both of his hands and started pulling himself towards the end of the spike. Argonne could not see, but the robot's eyes were jittering with excitement as they saw the pain and suffering of Argonne. The white pod slowly was splattered with blood as Argonne’s grip slipped from time to time pulling himself out. Once near the end Argonne tried to aim himself towards the pod and with one last roar, pushed himself out of the spike and landed near the pod off the side.
During that dive the lower half of his body already damaged from the previous fall nearly fell apart, the flesh torn from the upper body. More pain and blood wracked his body as he slowly crawled towards the pod. Robotic laughter started emanating from the head of the robot. It reminded him of the enforcer that he fought a terrible screeching, like rusted metal plates grinding against each other. The surrounding laughter of the robot almost empowered him, constant doubt towards him, and each every grievance he ever had pushed him closer and closer to his goal.
“Please I don’t care about revenge.” Argonne pleaded pressing one hand dragging his lower body and one hand dragging the rest forward. The uneven terrain made each wound painfully obvious and crawling over it made it even more difficult but he preserved. The laughter around him slowly stopped and he felt the stare of the robot pierce his soul once more. The pod was in between the robot and Argonne.
“One more chance is all I ask” A hand found purchase on the pod and Argonne abandoned the lower half of his body for the last stretch, “ I’ll be happy with anything.”
Argonne finally hoisted himself on top of the pod, the pure white pod slowly turning red from his injuries. Getting a closer look in the pod, the part that opened up revealed a pure white surface that was solid flat. The pod opened only a quarter of the pod and that part was hollow, but the rest was solid. As soon as his body made it into the quarter of the pod, the pod sealed shut behind him but the seal was now transparent.
“Commencing integration process.” The robot's voice returned. The pod suddenly came to life as white cords suddenly pierced themselves inside Argonne’s body. The white cords bulged as something was pumped inside his body. As the first substance entered his body he felt the lower half of his body suddenly became restored, flesh, blood, and bone regrowing. As more and more substances entered his body his mind and body became weaker and weaker and soon darkness took him.
The robot looked on, even without emotion on its face the robot vibrated with excitement. A new prospect has entered the game, but first he must survive the introduction.
