Reversal of Good and Evil
I want to resign.

I want to resign.

Huang Quan rode his motorcycle towards the company, deep in thought. Now that he had a few million in his pocket, he was far from his ultimate goal but no longer in the dire straits he once was. With the Hell Apartment in his mind and the need to help its residents fulfill their last wishes, continuing his job would be inconvenient. After much deliberation, he decided to resign from the company.

Upon arriving at the office, Huang Quan didn't waste any time. He quickly drafted his resignation letter and headed to the boss's office. The trade company was small, without an HR or admin department, so employees typically resigned directly to the boss. Standing at the office door, he noticed the privacy blinds were drawn, and the door was tightly shut.

Was the boss not in?

His boss, Zhang, was a stingy and suspicious man, always fearing that his employees would slack off. As long as he was in the office, his door was always open so he could monitor everyone. Given the company’s recent poor performance, Zhang had been struggling to secure clients and had been punctually arriving and leaving the office every day. So where could he be at this hour?

Huang Quan sighed, thinking he'd have to find another time to submit his resignation. But just as he was about to turn away, he heard a sound from inside. Was it a mouse? Or had a thief broken in?

In his haste, Huang Quan didn’t bother knocking and pushed the door open. The sight before him made him wish he could sink into the ground. His boss was kneeling on the sofa, and beneath him was his secretary.

Hearing the door, neither of them had time to react before Huang Quan barged in, taking in the entire embarrassing scene. The secretary was the first to react, quickly pushing Zhang off her. Already panting, Zhang lost his balance with the shove and rolled onto the floor in a laughable, awkward heap.

Huang Quan froze for a moment, then quickly closed the door and stepped back outside.

After a brief silence, Zhang's voice called out, "What is it? Come in!" His tone was far from friendly, laced with both urgency and anger.

Huang Quan shook his head, knowing he was in for a lecture. As he opened the door, the secretary scurried out, and Zhang had already settled back into his chair.

"Xiao Huang, you’ve been with the company for a while now. I told you I was having a meeting with the secretary. How could you just barge in like that without following protocol?" Zhang reprimanded him, glaring as Huang Quan struggled to suppress his laughter, his body shaking with the effort.

Zhang, noticing this, glared even harder. "Well? What’s so urgent that you had to burst in here?"

Huang Quan swallowed, forcing himself to stop shaking, and replied seriously, "Mr. Zhang, I’m here to resign."

Zhang was stunned for a few seconds, clearly unable to believe his ears. "You’re quitting because of what you just saw...?" Zhang’s voice trailed off, awkwardly glancing away.

Huang Quan shook his head. "No, I came in to resign before I even saw that."

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

This time, Zhang understood. Leaning back in his chair, he looked at Huang Quan with a haughty expression.

"Xiao Huang, you young people have no patience. You learn a few things and think you’re too good for the job. Don’t think that just because you’ve picked up a few skills, other companies will be lining up to hire you. Even if they do, you’ll start from the bottom—cleaning and making tea. Where else will you get the kind of opportunities you have here?"

Huang Quan smiled slightly. "I’m grateful for your guidance, Mr. Zhang, but I have personal reasons that make it necessary for me to resign."

Zhang’s face darkened. Huang Quan’s good looks had helped the company secure several deals, and now that he was leaving, Zhang was worried about losing even the few remaining clients they had.

"Don’t think you can rely on your looks to find another job. Let me tell you, no one else will hire someone as inexperienced as you. Get back to work before you lose what little chance you have!"

Huang Quan didn’t know how to respond to that. Seeing his silence, Zhang softened his tone slightly. "Alright, Xiao Huang, I get it. You’re angling for a raise, right? I’ll talk to finance and have your salary increased by five hundred yuan starting next month."

Huang Quan shook his head. "Mr. Zhang, it’s not about the money. I really need to resign."

Zhang shot up from his chair, furious. "Don’t push your luck, Huang Quan! I’m being nice, but you’re taking advantage. Who do you think you are, trying to quit on me? Remember, you’ve got a month’s salary that I’m holding onto. If you don’t want it, go ahead and leave now. But if you do, get back to work."

Huang Quan sighed. That month’s salary wasn’t much to him now, but he had worked hard for it, especially putting in overtime to buy a birthday gift for his ex-girlfriend. He didn’t want to let it go.

Seeing Huang Quan’s reluctance, Zhang dropped all pretense and sneered, "No ambition, no wonder your girlfriend left you. With your pathetic life, who wouldn’t run off with someone better?"

At this, Huang Quan’s temper flared. Why did people always bring up his ex-girlfriend as if constantly reminding him of the betrayal? He was already planning to leave, so he didn’t hold back. "Mr. Zhang, I’ve heard your father-in-law is quite wealthy. Didn’t he help you set up this company?"

Zhang looked puzzled, not understanding why Huang Quan would mention that.

Huang Quan smiled coldly. "If I were to tell your wife what I just saw, do you think you’d still have a company to run?"

Zhang inhaled sharply, realizing that Huang Quan had been holding this card all along. Just as he was about to lash out, a voice came from the door. "Xiao Huang, what is it you want to tell me?"

Zhang’s wife walked in, and Zhang instantly went pale, trembling like a mouse before a cat.

Huang Quan looked between the boss’s wife and Zhang, feigning a difficult expression. "Well, Mr. Zhang, do you want to tell her, or should I?"

Zhang quickly forced a smile. "No problem, Xiao Huang. I’ll approve your resignation right now, and I’ll have your back pay transferred immediately."

Zhang’s wife, still standing in the doorway, was confused. She had distinctly heard Huang Quan mention something important before she entered, but now they were discussing his salary?

She asked, "Xiao Huang, what exactly is going on?"

Huang Quan maintained eye contact with Zhang, who immediately picked up the phone and called finance. Within minutes, Huang Quan’s salary was in his account.

Satisfied, Huang Quan turned to Zhang’s wife. "It’s nothing, really. Mr. Zhang wasn’t going to pay me, so I said I’d tell you if he didn’t."

She frowned slightly, still suspicious. "Really?"

Huang Quan nodded earnestly, then turned and left without saying more. Before he left, he glanced at the sofa.

Following his gaze, the boss’s wife noticed the rumpled sofa, with two distinct knee imprints on it. "So, Zhang, you’ve been sneaking around right under my nose!"

What happened after that, Huang Quan didn’t know. But as he walked away, he could hear Zhang’s desperate pleas for mercy.

Stepping out of the company, Huang Quan stretched deeply, feeling as if a new chapter had just begun.

"Wait a minute... there’s a new tenant in the apartment. How could I have forgotten?"
