CHAPTER 1: WHERE EVERYTHING STOPPED

As the first light of dawn crept into the laboratory, casting a warm glow on the walls, Dr.James Aether bent over in a high tech table, studying the screen in front of him. Dr.James Aether said to Katherine, The disease is spreading rapidly, and there isn’t anything I can do to stop it. I’m going home to think about it, he added, coughing blood, ‘Good night, Katherine’.

Katherine replied, ‘Do you need help getting home, Sir?’ He laughed weakly and said, ‘No, No, I don't need help. Thank you. You just go home, have a good night’s rest, and we'll meet back here tomorrow”.

As Dr.James Aether stepped through the threshold of his home, a sense of weariness weighed heavy on his shoulders. Yet, before he could even she s his coat, a whirlwind of energy came hurtling towards him. It Mercer Aether,his son, bounding across the floor to envelop him in a tight hug.

“Dad! Dad" Mercer exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with excitement.” I read this awesome comic today! The superhero in it saves everyone, and he's the coolest”. James couldn't help but smile at his son's enthusiasm. “Really? Tell me more about him, “ he encourage, ruffling Mercer’s hair.

“He saves people from the bad guys and... “Mercer began, but his words were interrupted by his mother voice.

“Mercer, it’s time for dinner! Come and eat", Rebecca called from the kitchen. “Coming, Mom! “ Mercer replied, tearing himself away from his father to rush downstairs. As they gathered around the dinner table, Jessica, James’ daughter, joined then. “ Afternoon, Dad, “ She greeted him with a smile. “ Afternoon, Jessica, “ James returned the greeting, his voice warm. Just as they began to eat, the shrill ring of the phone shattered the tranquillity of the moment. James excused himself and stepped outside to answer the call.

“Sir, I have bad news, “ Katherine’s voice echoed through the receiver. “ The charts are going crazy. The disease is spreading rapidly through your body, and you might have only a couple of days left. “ James felt his heart sink as Katherine’s words washed over him. “Oh, he managed, his voice barely whisper. “ And it might affect your family too sir". Katherine added, her tone heavy with concern. Tears welled up in James’ eyes as he struggled to process the devastating news. “ There’s nothing left of me, Katherine, “he admitted, his voice breaking with emotion. “ Just keep researching, even if I'm not here. Take care of my family.... and the company”.

“Sir, I'll do everything in my power to save your family and UGO GENETICS”, Katherine vowed solemnly before the line went silent, leaving James alone with thoughts and the weight of an uncertain future.

As Mercer awoke to the sound of moaning, he found his father lifeless in their bedroom, his mother and sister weeping beside him. Hours passed in sorrow as they awaited the arrival of death-place attendants to take his father away. The funeral came and went, leaving Mercer’s family shattered.

Rebecca, consumed by grief and addiction, descended into a cycle of despair, lashing out violently at Jessica and Mercer. Tragically, one drunken night, she fatally struck Jessica to death, and in a moment of madness, forced Mercer to end her life as well. Alone and traumatized, Mercer found himself orphaned, haunted by the memories of his family’s demise.

Hospitalized due to his father's illness, Mercer faced a grim prognosis, : a rare, incurable disease that would claim his life within three years. Isolated and hallucinating, Mercer clung to the memory of his family, his health deteriorating rapidly.

One fateful day, as Mercer gazed at the river from a hospital balcony, he saw visions of his loved ones beckoning him. Overwhelmed by despair, he fell into the river, his strength drained.
