Chapter 3

Darkness, it's all that I could see after being escorted to the bunker. Though I could still feel the warmth of Sam nearby, and what I assumed was Kayti hopefully. And as my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I was slowly lowered to the ground sitting on what felt like cement. My head still throbbing in pain from whatever had happened up at the Leader's office. So I rested my face in my hands for a moment, just trying to gather my composure when whisperings started, though I couldn't exactly make out what they were saying.

And so out of curiosity I looked up, looking at Kayti as something was happening. A tiny blue flame danced across her fingertips, and my first thought was along the lines of wondering if I was still in that weird dream. Someone conjuring flames out of thing air? It just wasn't possible. Or was it? I mean, she was doing it right there in front of me. "Hey uh- What kind of lighter burns blue?", she must have had a lighter hidden in her palm! That had to be the case.

But when she looked at me with a big smile and opened her palm to reveal there was nothing in it, I went silent. A baffled silence that made me almost forget the splitting pain in my brain. "No lighter here BC, wait...there's no shot you don't know about magic yet.", magic? What was this some kind of fairy tale like the stories from before the war? Magic didn't exist! Or so I had thought.

"I'm sorry did you just say magic? Ok, I think I might be in some sort of fever dream.", but then again why had I been shutting all of this out? Just a little bit ago I had been dropped to the floor without being hit or even approached. And so running it all through my head I let out a tiny sigh and looked back to Kayti who looked smug. "Ok, fine I'll..try to believe you. How are you producing these flames with magic?" was the first question that came to my mind.

And as if thinking about it for a second she began speaking, "Well you see-". And that's when Sam joined into the conversation interrupting her and shooting her a smug look as she grimaced. "Magic! That's quite literally it, people found out after the war for whatever reason that people were able to unlock these supernatural abilities.". So, magic was real. Wait if magic was real, does that mean I had the potential to use it?

"So if magic is real can-", once more being cut off by Sam. They answered my question before it even exited my mouth completely, "Yes, yes you can! My magic type actually forces people's abilities to activate. So whatever happened back in that office...", they trailed off as if thinking about what had happened before bursting out in laughter. "I guess your magic lets you suddenly have a seizure!", Sam laughed at me as my eyes darkened.

Though justice was served as Kayti made the flames grow higher, hitting Sam with it before spreading the embers out to light various candles. And now with a clear view of the bunker, seeing all of the people packed into it. Sitting there with bored faces, as if one was sitting in a class. This was normal to them, but what did it mean? Why did they need to come down here? And as if she could see into my mind, Kayti answered my question. "It's for safety, another more powerful settlement comes by and we pretend to be weak. Like we have less people then we do.", was Camp Ignis being bullied by a bigger settlement?

The harder I thought about it, the more my mind hurt. So deciding to close my eyes and try to rest it off, I slipped into that world again. This time though as I looked around, things were a bit different. Camp Obsidian was a bit more torn down, walls opened in buildings and walls and as I searched it, I found shards of glass. And just like the puddle last time, I was more than just me. "We have to prepare.", said a voice that was unfamiliar and yet it seemed like the name of it was on the tip of my tongue. It was uncomfortable to say the least.

"But, they're just children they aren't ready for war!", shouted Wayne. Wait, Mr. Wayne? Why was I hearing him now? He hadn't been in the bunker it was just civilians down there, and what did he mean by war? Questions racing through my head I focused, focusing on the conversation Wayne was having, and it was like I could hear the whole thing. "That may be so, but they have a natural affinity to their powers. Well, except the new boy but-", just then Wayne's voice had cut him off to shut down his idea. "Absolutely not, they will not stain their hands with blood."

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Then it was silent for a while before a deep breathe was taken, and the man spoke again. "As the leader of Camp Ignis, I say they will fight this war so our settlement can remain safe.", just then the voice clicked with me. It was the leader of the settlement! "Yes sir.", Wayne said replying with a grimace in his voice obviously holding back various curses and insults. And before I could poke more into the situation I was being brought out from my sleep, by a worried Sam and Kayti.

"Hey bud...are you alright? You're burning up, and murmuring about some kind of war...", said Kayti with a gentle tone obviously questioning my sanity. "I'm fine, just...a dream..I think.", I said as I was standing up giving her a little wave to show her I was fine. But my unsure tone caught the interest of the two, in a world of magic perhaps these dreams were some form of magic in their own. Or maybe it was just that, a dream.

"You uhm- you think?", I gave a little nod before replying to her. "Yea, I think. Though I've never had a dream like it before until I was knocked out cold in the Leader's office.", I had told the two explaining my thoughts on why it was a dream before looking up to see Sam's face paled. Which was my first sign that these 'dreams' were only going to big us more trouble. "Uhm- that means it's some kind of ability like ours...what happened the first time?", thinking about it just for a moment was it really an ability? And if so why was mine so self-destructive?

"Well, after my brain kind of shut off I had a dream that I was at the old Camp but it was overgrown. But I was hearing voices, as if I was them. I heard Wayne outside the office, and the conversation you two had.", with that Kayti and Sam looked between each other exchanging a worried glance. "You don't think it's uh- some form of precognition do you?", sitting there thinking on it for a second I shook my head. "Precognition would mean I was seeing it before it happened, but it was in real time."

So sitting there in silence for a bit we sat there in thought, "It was the leader. He was saying that some children would need to fight a war to keep the peace of the camp.". This only made the other two's expressions sour, now knowing it might mean it could be them that was being sent out to fight in a war they didn't want to be a part of. Though I didn't get a reply back from either, I did look at them watching as Kayti played with a tiny blue fireball and Sam had lost his usually joking demeanor.

Though soon our little thinking triangle was cut short, by the sound of the bunker opening and light flooding it. And just as quickly as light shone in, the candles flicked dead. "Alright everyone! Come on out!", said Mr. Wayne and it seemed I was the first one to get up and head out as I looked Wayne in the eyes. "Is there a war?", my question seemed to catch him off guard as his usual happy face faltered for just a moment to shock. Before just as quickly as it shifted it went back to normal, but hidden behind those eyes were caution. "What are you talking about? Why would there be a war?"

By now people were rushing out of the bunker to get back to the comfort of the outside and their dorms, except me. I was held back by the firm grasp of Wayne's hand, and after everyone was gone and Sam and Kayti were waved off he brought me aside. "Who told you about the war?", it seemed that he could see that I saw his shock and confusion and didn't believe his act. "Nobody, I saw it in a dream...", my answer didn't seem to satisfy him as he looked back towards the backs of Sam and Kayti.

"I already said nobody did, I think it's my ability.", I said more firmly this time which seemed to bring his attention back to me. His gaze watching me as he looked around, shaking his head as his hand moved to my shoulder with a tight grip. His voice lowered as to not be overhead, "You can not tell anyone. Do you understand?". The usually cheery tone had been replaced with one of seriousness, and I saw a glimpse of something. Or rather someone that Wayne was hiding from everyone.

"Yes sir.", my voice trembled as it struggled to get the words out as he patted my back and began leading me somewhere else. "Well, it's time for your first lesson!", I had almost forgotten his promise of turning me into a warrior after everything had happened. Though my mind slipped a bit as I blurted out a question, "Will you teach me how to use my ability?", standing there he pondered the question before nodding with a sigh.

He turned and started walking as I followed behind him with a new found energy. "I suppose I'll teach you the basics of drawing out your ability to use it.", the way he worded it seemed odd until I had remembered. Kayti and Sam had both different abilities, and so did the Leader since he had needed Sam to forcefully activate my power. "Oh that's right you won't be able to actually help me with figuring out the ability itself, just how to draw it out...". And as we approached a back gate of the camp, he reached up and opened it to expose a forest with a training ground inside of it.

And as he looked back at me with a smile, he put one fist in his palm and popped his knuckles. It seemed he also had regained most of his vigor and joy in the face of being able to train. "Well here we go lad, it's time to turn you into a soldier."
