Chapter 1 - Sloth (re)incarnated

To the weird llama god who sent me here, and to whoever checking on me. Hello again.

It has been close to two weeks sine I hatched into a Slakoth, and I'm not sure if there was too much or too little actions. Every instant awake is full of discoveries and wonders, but if my maths is right I spent 85% of my day sleeping. So, yeah... I'm sure the amount I do everyday may seem insignificant for people without a sleep schedule, but for a 4h/day awake sloth, it's a lot. Not that I'm complaining, I got what I wished for.

Now. Starting from the beginning, let me tell you about my new family.

First on my list of fellow napping enthusiats, Momma. Resident Slaking of wherever we are, bringer of the Oran berries, the sweetest person in my current life (and perhaps the previous one too), head honcho of our cluch of narcoleptics, single mother of five, and surely another dozen titles.

She did not lie when she said I was early to hatch, the rest of the eggs only hatched two days ago. And while I was a little lonely because there was only me and my new mom in our bit of the forest - I wasn't sure if other pokemon did not come closer because they were non-existent or because they wouldn't dare encroaching on Slaking territory with young ones - but it also meant that I got to keep her just for myself.

Did my reincarnation affected my mental state so much that I regressed to an infant, or was I just really touch and attention starved thanks to modern society in my prior life ? Neither ? Both ? I don't know. Regardless of such issue, I got private lessons on how to be a good Slakoth while we waited for my brothers and sisters to hatch. The tldr is that you have to master sleeping.

But not normal sleeping, we already have 20 hours per day for that. We're doing advanced sleeping. Remember in the anime when they used a move and that they get covered/shot some kind of coloured energy ? Yeah, that. Turns out, all pokemons naturally generate that energy in them. And the moves we got to see in the anime or use in the game ? All different way to mold, shape, alter and give purpose to said energy. Why does that matter for advanced sleeping ? Well, the trick is trying to sleep, but infusing your sleep with that energy. The effects are nothing short of magical.

But, It creates some kind of weird feedback loop. Like, of course you have a limited amount of that energy, but when you rest you kinda assume that it would be to recover said energy. Which leave us in the loop of :

1) I use energy to sleep.

2) I feel more rested because of it.

3) But I used energy to do so, so I am more tired because of it.

Am I supposed to be tired or rested after using that move ? I voiced my concern to Momma and she had a chuckle at my question.

"Good. You caught on quickly. It is a problem that all of our people have to face. The real trick to advanced sleeping isn't infusing your energy into the sleep. It's being able to control for how long you will sleep so that the boon you gain from that rest is still bigger than the price you paid from your reserves. When you will have mastered that. You will truly know how to Slack Off!" she said, patting my head in praise.

Again with that weird capitalization. Let's move on.

Another thing necessary to understand advanced sleeping was another move I've seen Momma use once per day. The one she used to put me (and now me and my siblings) to bed. Took me some day to understand it was a move and not just me being exhausted after 4 hours of intense sloth training, but it only clicked in my brain after she explained the trick to Slack Off. She was using Yawn. How to tell if it is a yawn or a Yawn you ask ? Well, you usually only see one of the latter before your eyes get too heavy to remain open.

I noticed because I was getting the same sensation of an energy-induced sleep despite not using Slack Off myself. And given for how long we sleep, I was not sure if Momma had to maintain putting us to sleep for the whole night (if which, her energy reserves must be gigantic) or if it just helps putting us under and normal sleep take over once the energy is released...

And the trick to using Yawn ? Same as Slack Off really. Only instead of internalizing the energy for a sleep, you needed to weave the concept of sleep in it and release it around you to trigger sleepiness to those nearby. Easy in theory, more difficult in pratice. You cannot just release it through your body. You need a medium for the transfer of energy, and the easiest most accessible around is air. You thus need to transform your sleep-infused energy into sound for the move to function and others to be affected. A bit rough on the throat, but once you get used to it, you get a nice skill and will be able to negotiate a much better nanny salary.

Technically, I found you don't really need to yawn to use Yawn. But what's better than a yawn to indicate it's time to sleep ?

By the time my sibling hatched, I was sufficently familiar with Slack Off to use it mostly at will (albeit slowly) and had managed to use Yawn only once. The face of surprise on Momma when I countered her Yamn by my own just before we both fell asleep from the moves. I got a stern reprimand for that since it left us without anyone awake to defend us, but she gave me another slice or Oran berry and a pat as congratulation for another move learnt.

Things got a bit more chaotic with four more Slakoth in the family. Two little brothers and sisters. Apparently, baby pokemons are born way more mature than their human counterpart, understanding and use of language and energy comes naturally just minutes after hatching. Sure they are not forming full sentences right off the bat, but still leagues ahead the baseline human toadlers. I thought I was quick to get all that because of my reincarnated status, but no. Seems like it's the norm for pokemons.

It is also around this time that I finally got a name too.

Lars.

My sisters were named Ada and Gen, Tim and Bash for my brothers.

Momma was waiting to see all of us to give us names it seems. I don't know why, but something stirred in me when she gave me mine. And I wasn't alone. All five of us were positevely giddy with our new names.

Having already blazed through the 'Slakoth 101' course, I got to spend the next few days lazing around watching my little siblings train under Momma's tutelage to catch up to me. Which was hilarious to watch as my brothers and sisters develloped like mirrors behaviour wise. Ada and Bash always seemed to try and on-up each other in performances (I was getting strong rival vibes from those two); while Tim and Gen were more laidback, taking advantage of the other two constant bickering to properly slack off (not the move, not yet at least) while Momma tried to bring order back to the lessons.

I perhaps shouldn't have laugh at her for it because, at some point, she decided to dump the siblings' conflict mediation on me and stormed somewhere to fetch berries against headaches. Jokes on you Momma, I have no patience either. So I ended up using Yawn on whoever was fighting. It made for such an exercise that Tim and Gen ended up helping me cast our sibling to sleep most of the time. Practice was great. Like hitting two pidgey with one Rock Throw. Or in this case, two slakoths with one Yawn.

Ada and Bash would mellow out in time... I hope.

Days passed and it wasn't long until everyone was up to date on how to be a Slakoth. Now confident in our abilities, Momma decided to switch the training focus. It would be more free form. We would tap into our energy reserve and think of way to use it. Of course, we could still ask our mother for help, but it would far more gratifying if we could come with somthing on our own.

Ada and Bash, ever the fighters, managed to get Scratch down very quickly. And having learned their lessons about fighting each other and the consequences of doing it, aka being forcefully put to bed for being a naughty child, they decided to compare strenght by making marks on trees. I was aksed more than once to judge for the best mark, the longest mark, the cleanest mark, etc etc... Being the eldest of the clutch apprently gives me instant qualification as an omnipotent judge in the eyes of my younger siblings on the topic of mediation.

Tim took a bit more time and decided that violence wasn't for him, which lead to him to devellop Defense Curl in order to ignore the number of wood shavings Ada and Bash were throwing everywhere with their moves.

Gen decided to side with her sister and spent most of the time cheering her to beat Bash. It seems she adapted the trick to convert intent-infused energy into sound to recreate something that looked like Encore. Using the move to push both contestants to their limits faster ! Simply devious.

As for me... I try to look inside. We instinctivelly know the names of moves we can use. There was Slack Off and Yawn, but I wasn't feeling whole with just them. I knew something else, but couldn't put my claw on it. I continued to look deeper and deeper, if I knew another move, when would I have learn it ? It would have to be before Momma's training... But I was in an egg at the time. No. That was just for a brief moment, most of time before hatching was in that infinite white void with the weird llama.

Neurons clicked and I remembered my wish.

'Can I wish for a lot of free time to rest?'

A slight pink tint appear in my energy reserve. The colour flashed outward, engulfing me in power. A single word came. A move ready to go upon my command.

Rest.

And it was the best sleep ever. Thank you God.
