Chapter 1 - Awakening Day

Chapter 1 - Awakening Day

PART 1 - THE AWAKENING

Ventex meditated on his bed, watching the swirling colors behind his eyelids for the first sign of his Awakening. Both of his parents were Bakers, but he held onto hope of receiving a combat Class.

The System Awakened children on their seventeenth birthday, transitioning them into adults. Most Awakened would receive Classes like Baker or Worker, but one in every thousand would receive a combat Class, allowing them to learn fantastic Skills, fight dangerous Mobs, and gain many Levels.

A blue panel slowly formed in Ventex’s mind, constructed from the swirling colors behind his eyelids. If he opened his eyes, the slowly forming panel would disappear, only to reform once he closed his eyes again. Finally, after an eternity of waiting, it appeared in full.

You have Awakened!

The first panel was the same for everyone. The beautiful blue background with white text shimmered softly in Ventex’s mind. When he opened his eyes, he could almost make out the panel’s outline floating ethereally in front of him. He made a swiping motion with his hand, dismissing the panel.

You have Awakened the Respec System!

You have earned the Class: Classless!

You have earned the Perk: Respec!

“Woo!” Ventex’s first reaction was to shout with joy. He had barely read the first line before he opened his eyes, unable to contain himself. While one in one thousand people received a combat Class, only one in one million received a special System. Normal Awakened were called Users, and they all had the same standard System. Awakened with special Systems were called Players, and they had several advantages over Users.

Ventex could barely contain himself while he reached over to his nightstand and placed his hand on a pile of loose coins. The Credit System was one advantage given to Players: the removal of the need to carry around bulky coins. With a few practiced thoughts Ventex absorbed the silver coins on the nightstand into his System, leaving only the cheap copper coins behind.

A barely-visible panel appeared over the earlier panel and quickly disapeared.

+14 Credits

Ventex closed his eyes to get a better look at the panels, just barely catching the Credit notification before it vanished. The Respec System was his special System, making him a Player instead of a User. His Class, however, was far from exemplary.

Everything the System did was triggered by instinctual thoughts, so it only took Ventex a few seconds to open his Class information page, just like when he converted the silver coins on his nightstand into Credits.

Classless: No bonuses or restrictions. Plus 8 unassigned Stat Points per Level.

Ventex stared in silence for a good while. Such a Class wasn’t what he had hoped for, but it had potential. Some Classes came with debilitating restrictions, and most Classes had assigned Stat Point distributions that made unrelated lifestyles impossible. Being able to assign his Stat Points was good, but Ventex had a feeling he wouldn’t be getting any combat-related Perks from his Class.

Ventex dismissed his Class description and looked at the last line of his Awakening panel; the Perk: Respec. It shared the name of his System, so it would be a clue to what kind of special System he had Awakened.

Respec: You can convert assigned Stat Points into unassigned Stat Points.

It was as straightforward as they came, and it changed everything. In the same way that a warrior might change their weapon to suit a particular Mob, they could wish to change their Stat Point assignment, but it was impossible to reassign Stat Points in the standard System.

With the Perk: Respec, Ventex could reassign his Stat Points to fit any scenario. What’s more, his Respec System might grant him other Perks with similarly unique functions.

Ventex dismissed all the panels and eagerly pulled up his Status.

He had learned about the eight basic Stats while attending school. Vitality and Strength were for warriors, Dexterity and Endurance were for rogues, Intellect and Wisdom were for support, and Affinity and Spirit were for magicians.

Just to test his Perk, Ventex willed a Stat Point out of Vitality, but he immediately regretted it. His whole body felt weak, as if he hadn’t eaten or slept in days. He quickly returned the Stat Point to Vitality.

Never reset Vitality to zero. I probably shouldn’t mess with the rest of them, either.

Even after returning the Stat Point to Vitality, it took Ventex a couple minutes to recover. Once his body calmed down, Ventex dismissed his Status and got up from his bed. He stretched, then got dressed and filled his pockets with all the money in his room he could find - converting the silver coins into Credits. After that, he grabbed a short wooden spear that leaned against his bedroom wall. It had no metal whatsoever, and the tip was dull; it merely looked like a spear. Feeling anxious, Ventex activated a special ability belonging to Players: his Inventory. A Player’s Inventory could store three handheld weapons or shields, plus three outfits. The spear immediately disappeared from his hand and appeared in a System panel.

With that, Ventex readied to leave, fully prepared to start his first day as a Player.

PART 2 - BIRTHDAY GIFTS

Ventex’s family lived in a three-story bakery in the city-state of Orbya. The bakery saw hundreds of customers per day, serving all kinds of breads, muffins, and dry rations. Customers could eat inside or outside, but most took their order to another location. Before his Awakening, Ventex made deliveries to various restaurants around the city, but he was ready for that to be over.

Ventex came downstairs and sat in a chair next to his younger sister, who was reading a book and snacking on hard biscuits. Ventex grabbed a biscuit and ate half of it and said, “Guess my Class.”

Athella looked up for a moment before returning her gaze to her book. “Baker, or something,” she replied.

Ventex smirked. “Classless; and it gives me eight unassigned Stat Points per Level. That means I can choose if I want to be a Mage or a Warrior.” At this moment, Ventex decided he was going to keep his Perk: Respec a secret.

I’m definitely going to surprise her with this, somehow.

Ventex waited for Athella’s reaction, but she was indifferent. She had been like this for years, not caring at all about Ventex’s dreams of greatness.

Lorgus and Maetha worked behind a counter, separated from the dining area and out of earshot of Ventex and Athella. Ventex took a second biscuit and walked behind the counter to tell them the good news.

“I Awakened!” he announced. “Classless: I get eight unassigned Stat Points per Level.”

“That’s good,” Lorgus said. His own Class gave him one Strength, two Dexterity, one Endurance, and one Intellect per Level.

“That’s not good,” Maetha opposed. “Venny is supposed to be a Baker with Baker Perks. I don’t want my boy running Dungeons for Levels.”

“Hey, Venny,” Lorgus called Ventex over and took something from his pocket. “Happy birthday, son.”

Ventex took what was offered to him, and it was a gold coin - worth fifty silver coins. “Thanks, dad,” Ventex said and gave his father a quick hug, then ran out of the bakery.

“Why do you encourage him?” Maetha bemoaned, but Ventex ignored her and didn’t stay long enough to hear his father’s reply.

With a thought, the gold coin entered Ventex’s Credits, bringing him up to 72. It was a lot of money for someone his age, but it was barely enough to afford what he was going out to buy: Skill Books.

Ventex ran down crowded cobblestone streets to reach a popular Skill Book shop. The Gilded Eagle Emporium sold Skill Books obtained from all over the continent, plus rare collections from the wild continent - the New World.

Skill Books could be consumed by Users and Players to learn new Skills, but the Skill had to be allowed by the Class. For Ventex’s Classless, there were no Skill restrictions, so he could learn any Skill from a Skill Book.

Fireball: Shoot a ball of fire. Speed, size, and heat increases with Affinity.

Web Shot: Shoot an expanding spiderweb a short distance. Stickiness increases with Affinity.

Meteor: Call a meteor from the sky to fall upon your enemies. Cannot be used where the sky is not visible. Weight and tracking increases with Affinity.

Ventex really wanted Meteor, but the Skill Book cost five gold or 250 silver. Ventex looked around for a while, until he noticed a particularly attractive Skill imported from the New World.

Telekinesis: Move objects with your mind. Strength and distance increases with Wisdom.

That sounds so cool!

A Skill like Fireball would let Ventex blast apart Mobs in the Dungeons around Orbya, but Telekinesis would be useful to him almost everywhere he went. He immediately thought of taking fresh loaves of bread out of ovens without any mitts on, or taking something from the other side of the counter without having to walk around. Somehow, it only cost thirty-five silver.

Ventex decided to buy the Skill Book for Telekinesis, and he approached the counter for purchasing. “I want the Skill Book for Telekinesis.”

“Okay. Please be aware that the Skill: Telekinesis is only compatible with Mentalist Class types. As a general rule, we do not accept returns on any Skill Book for any reason, even incompatible Class types,” the worker said.

“I understand,” Ventex replied, and the worker stepped away to get the Skill Book. While Ventex waited, he retrieved thirty-five silver coins from his Credits, materializing them in his hands and placing them on the counter.

The worker returned and said, “Here you are, Telekinesis.”

Ventex slid seven stacks of five silver coins each across the counter, and the worker handed the Skill Book to Ventex, who immediately opened it - revealing blank pages within - and used his System to learn the Skill.

You have learned Telekinesis: Move objects with your mind. Strength and distance increases with Wisdom.

Ventex marveled at the possibilities of his new Skill until the worker coughed. “There’s a line,” he pointed out, and Ventex scrambled out of the way.

The store had many more Skills for sale, but Ventex needed to save his money for his next destination. He left the store and got off the busy street, then took several alleyways toward a specialty shop that rarely saw customers.

The inside of the shop didn’t have much room for moving around. About seven eighths of the room was behind the counter, staffed by an old man cutting up dark red meat. He didn’t look up until Ventex interrupted him, “Hello.”

The old man looked up and asked, “What can I get you?”

Ventex glanced at the mysterious meat and replied, “I want to buy two Levels.”

“Which Levels?” the old man asked.

“Two and three,” Ventex replied.

“That can be done,” the old man said. He put down his knife and went into the back of the store, then came out holding a large chicken by its elongated neck. “A Level 2 chicken. Hold it firmly by the neck.”

Ventex did as he was told and held the chicken with one hand. This chicken had changed from an animal into a Mob, and it would give Exp like any other Mob.

The old man handed Ventex a knife. “Cut its head off, and I’ll get the next one. We’ve got three more to go.”

Again, Ventex followed the old man’s instructions. Immediately after disconnecting the chicken’s head from its body, a System panel appeared.

Defeated Lv 2 Chicken!

Level-Up!

Ventex dismissed the panels, and the old man brought out the next chicken. It took only one chicken to Level-Up, but higher Levels needed more Exp to reach, and Mobs gave less Exp when their Level was lower relative to the Awaken’s Level. Once an Awakened was ten Levels higher than a Mob they killed, they wouldn’t get any Exp, so this method couldn’t be used forever.

“That’ll be four silver,” the old man said, and Ventex paid up.

Ventex exited the shop and brought up his Status.

Happy birthday to me. Got sixteen Stat Points easy.

He was ready to check out of the Dungeon.

PART 3 - DUNGEON DIVING

The Dungeons in Orbya were all located in the same area near the center of the city. In times of trouble, the Dungeons could be exploited for resources capable of sustaining a small army. In times of peace, the Dungeons were open to all Awakened, and hundreds of gold coins worth of resources were taken out of the Dungeons each day.

Ventex had hung around the Dungeon plaza of Orbya before his Awakening, so he knew all the Dungeons and what kinds of Mobs and Drops they contained.

The Red Ogre Dungeon; the Light Wisp Dungeon; the Toxic Slime Dungeon. These Dungeons were replicated using unknown means, then imported to Orbya. They provided basic potions, a few Skill Books, and low-quality iron and steel equipment. They could sustain combat-Class Awakened until Level thirty, at which point the yield of Exp and Drops would fall substantially.

The fourth and final Dungeon of Orbya was the Iron Wraith Dungeon. In it, Mobs reached over Level 60, meaning Awakened up to Level 70 could still get Exp and Drops from them. The Iron Wraith Dungeon’s Mobs Dropped ores and refined metal and rarely an extremely good Skill Book.

The dangers of the Dungeons were well documented, and Ventex already had a plan for how he wanted to tackle them. First, he would start with the Toxic Slime Dungeon, then work his way up to the Iron Wraith Dungeon. If he could get the Iron Wraith Dungeon’s special Skill Book, he would be able to explore the continent with relative safety.

The entrance to the Toxic Slime Dungeon wasn’t controlled in any way. Ventex simply walked up to the portal and stepped inside. If he held hands with someone while entering the Dungeon, they would enter as a Party, but Ventex entered alone, so he had his own instance of the Dungeon to himself. In the instance, Ventex wouldn’t meet any other Dungeon Divers, and all the floors would be populated by Mobs. If he left the Dungeon and came back, he would begin again on the first floor, and the Dungeon would be repopulated by Mobs. It made getting to low floors difficult, but it was the best way to get Exp and Drops.

Ventex appeared on the other side of the portal with a sense of nausea. It was only his second time going through a Dungeon’s portal - his first time being several years ago when he attended school - but he was told it would get better with experience.

The Toxic Slime Dungeon followed a brick sewer theme. Grime and moss grew everywhere, and dim torches illuminated the area from the walls. Dirty water trickled in from pipes along the walls, and it all accumulated in a shallow channel in the center of the tunnel. Fortunately for Ventex, although the Dungeon’s portal spit him out at the center of the tunnel, there was a wooden platform raised above the water to keep him dry.

The layout of the Dungeon’s tunnels were different for every instance, but the number of Mobs were always the same. The first floor always contained five roaming Level one toxic slimes and one Level 3 toxic slime Boss. The area immediately past the Dungeon’s portal was relatively safe, but Ventex needed to assign his Stat Points before continuing. He brought up his Status and thought of how he wanted things to go.

Telekinesis scaled with Wisdom, so that definitely needed a boost. Mental Skills were powered by Intellect, so that also needed a boost, but not as much as Wisdom. Strength, Dexterity, and Endurance would be useful if he needed to use his spear, so Ventex put the last of his Stat Points into those. Vitality would’ve been important if he was expecting to take damage, but Ventex would rather use enhanced Dexterity to dodge than rely on the increased defense of Vitality. Affinity and Spirit were useless to Ventex at this point, due to him not having any magical Skills.

After assigning everything, he checked his Status.

It looked fine, so he started advancing through the tunnel. He proceeded slowly, watching every corner for a Mob. It didn’t take long for him to encounter his first Level one toxic slime. It had a panel floating over its head, giving its Level and name.

Lv 1 Toxic Slime

The toxic slime had a small gelatinous body with a crystal core in its center. It rolled along at the center of the tunnel, blocking the water at the bottom of the channel, but it wasn’t large enough to make the path intraversable. The Mob had no sense of sight or hearing, but it could feel vibrations in the ground and investigate them. Anything it touched would be absorbed into its body. Organic substances were eaten, and inorganic materials were left behind. Toxic slimes in particular were flesh dissolvers.

Of course, Ventex had read up on all the Mobs in Orbya’s Dungeons. If he got a warrior-type Class, he would’ve chosen the Light Wisp Dungeon to start in, but he got lucky with his Class without restrictions in what kinds of Skills he could learn. Ranged Skills were super-effective against the fragile and poorly defended cores of slimes.

Ventex saw his first toxic slime and activated his Skill: Telekinesis on it. The Skill’s activation was instinctual, much like everything else having to do with the System. However, the Skill did nothing, and he wasn’t immediately certain why.

The toxic slime had heard Ventex’s footsteps and began approaching him. As a creature that could only move by rolling, it moved quite slow. Ventex attacked in a wide arc with Telekinesis, and he discovered his Skill wasn’t reaching far enough. At its farthest, it only reached about ten feet from his body. He didn’t feel anything when he swiped the air with Telekinesis, but he could feel the walls and floor of the tunnel like a pressure in his mind.

When the toxic slime reached within ten feet of Ventex, he grabbed the toxic slime’s core with Telekinesis and pulled it forward. Then, he violently slammed it against the stone floor, shattering it in a single hit. Once broken, it and the rest of the toxic slime’s body evaporated into nothing.

Defeated Lv 1 Toxic Slime!

The effort needed to shatter the toxic slime’s core caused a wave of pain to shoot through Ventex’s skull, but he could still go on. He looked down for any Drops and saw a glass bottle where the shattered remains of the toxic slime’s core should’ve been. He picked it up and rolled it around his hands.

Toxic slimes have a high chance of Dropping stamina potions. This one looks like a stamina restoration potion.

Potions could be gathered in high quantities from the three beginner Dungeons of Orbya, and they sold for about three copper coins each. Their effects typically weren’t any better than a good meal or a night of rest. However, an alchemist could combine low-tier potions into high-tier versions, multiplying the value. Some Mobs Dropped rare potions, but the chances were usually abysmal.

After pocketing the stamina restoration potion, Ventex continued to walk through the tunnel. There were four more Level one toxic slimes to kill before the floor was empty, and Ventex wanted the Exp and Drops.

The last four Mobs Dropped three stamina restoration potions and one stamina fortification potion. The Exp from the third toxic slime was enough to get him to Level 4, granting him eight Stat Points, of which he put two into Intellect and six into Wisdom. When he fought the fourth toxic slime, Ventex noticed his Telekinesis had more range and force, increasing proportionally to Wisdom.

Ventex had a little headache from using his Skill: Telekinesis so many times. Mentalist Class types often had overpowered Skills, but the headaches they caused would last all day and could not be relieved with typical potions. Chronic headaches would plague anyone else who tried to clear a Dungeon using a Mentalist Skill like Telekinesis, but Ventex had a unique workaround that was only possible due to his Respec System.

He activated his Perk: Respec and transferred all but one Stat Point from Wisdom into Intellect. The surge of fourteen points of Intellect instantly cleared his headache. It also opened his mind to his surroundings, letting him take in the sights, smells, and sounds of the Dungeon with more clarity than before. He suddenly knew how long he had been in the Dungeon for, the exact amount of money in his pocket, and that the distance of his Telekinesis was exactly equal to his Wisdom measured in feet from the center of his head.

Ventex returned his Stat Points to Wisdom and shook his head. The headache didn’t come back, and Ventex felt like he could challenge the first floor Boss without issue.

The portal to the Boss chamber wasn’t hard to find. The entry portal had deposited Ventex on the edge of the first floor, and the exit port was located on the opposite edge. The Dungeon had a maze-like layout, but it wasn’t too tricky to navigate.

Ventex walked through the portal to the Boss chamber, instantly appearing in a large circular room with a single Level three toxic slime sitting in the center. Dirty water poured out of pipes along the ceiling, but everything landed in a stream around the edge of the room. Occasionally, splashes of water dropped closer to the center of the room, but never close enough to touch the Boss or where Ventex was teleported to. Immediately after depositing Ventex in the room, the portal disappeared.

The Boss roused from its sleep a few moments after Ventex appeared. Visually, there was nothing different about it, except the panel above it had an extra word.

Lv 3 Boss Toxic Slime

Ventex took his spear out of his Inventory - just in case - and activated Telekinesis on the Boss’s core. In boring fashion, the core was plucked right out and shattered against the ground.

Maybe I’m ready for the second floor.

The Boss toxic slime Dropped a stamina fortification potion, and then two things happened: first, a treasure chest appeared in the center of the room. It glowed slightly, making it impossible to miss. Second, a new portal appeared against the opposite wall from where Ventex entered the chamber, and the portal leading to the first floor reappeared.

Defeating a Boss spawned a treasure chest and two portals. The new portal led to the next floor of the Dungeon, but the portal that took the place of the one that disappeared when Ventex entered the chamber was a new exit portal. If he chose to continue, he could always backtrack and use this exit portal to leave the Dungeon.

Ventex returned his unused spear to his Inventory, then opened the treasure chest. It contained two silver coins - which immediately got transferred into Credits, bringing him up to thirty-five - and an iron helmet. The helmet was very plain and very strange. It had marks from poor craftsmanship, even though it was something spawned by the Dungeon and not made by a real person. Ventex plopped the helmet on his head and strolled through the portal leading to the next floor.

The second floor of the Dungeon contained ten Level two toxic slimes and five Level one poisonous rats. The slimes were just as easy to kill as the Level three Boss. The rats were tiny, fast, and well camouflaged against the dirty stone floors and walls; they could be a problem if it wasn’t for their inability to bite through Ventex’s boots.

Lv 1 Poisonous Rat

The first one Ventex encountered was able to sneak up on him, and the panel didn’t appear until he registered it as an entity. Its teeth sunk into the leather of Ventex’s left boot, then stopped. Ventex easily picked it up with Telekinesis and slammed it against the floor like every toxic slime’s core before it. The rat had a little more resistance than the fragile cores, but the strength of Telekinesis backed by fifteen points of Wisdom was enough to make it unmistakably dead after two slams.

Defeated Lv 1 Poisonous Rat!

Ventex advanced quickly while keeping an eye out for poisonous rats. He wept for his boots which would need replaced after leaving the Dungeon, but he had enough money for an iron-lined set that wouldn’t be damaged so easily again. Whenever he started to feel a headache coming on, he moved his Stat Points from Wisdom into Intellect, then returned them a few minutes later.

Out of five Level one poisonous rats, only one Dropped a Skill Book: Sharp Bite. The Skill was basically useless for him, but it would be useful to a Tamer, so he kept it.

The ten Level two toxic slimes Dropped two stamina restoration potions, three stamina fortification potions, and one new Skill Book: Toxic Touch. The Skill added a flesh dissolving effect to his body, similar to what toxic slimes had. It made hand-to-hand combat much more dangerous for his opponents, but it didn’t do anything to weapons or at range. Ventex briefly debated selling it but ended up using the Skill Book on himself.

Ventex Leveled once quickly, then a second time after killing the last toxic slime of the floor.

He added a couple Stat Points to his physical Stats and put the rest in Intellect and Wisdom. He didn’t need the extra power from Wisdom, but the extra range was helpful. Higher Intellect made the time between headaches longer, and it allowed him to sustain two streams of Telekinesis for a brief time.

Next came the Boss chamber. Like the slimes before it, it was helpless against Ventex’s Telekinesis, and its core shattered like all the other ones. It Dropped a stamina restoration potion. This time, the treasure chest contained four silver coins and low-quality iron shoulderguards.

Ventex estimated the time and figured he wouldn’t be able to complete the third floor before it became unreasonably late. He had already earned six Credits, two pieces of iron gear, one Skill Book: Sharp Bite, seven stamina restoration potions, and five stamina fortification potions, so he was feeling quite satisfied. He carried the shoulderguards instead of wearing them, and he stepped through the portal to take him out of the Dungeon.

PART 4 - END OF DAY

Ventex carried his loot a short distance from the Dungeon portals to where several shops were set up to buy Drops. The prices were displayed out front, and they were all the same; there was no use trying to find a better deal somewhere else in Orbya.

Ventex offloaded the iron shoulderguards first. He decided to keep the iron helmet as a memento, but the shoulderguards were heavy and didn’t fit his combat style. As with most of the iron equipment that came out of the Dungeon, the store calculated the value by weighing the metal parts, coming out to two silver worth.

He sold the potions at another store, getting three copper for each. The Skill Book: Sharp Bite was worth twenty copper at a third store. In total, everything sold for three silver and twenty-six copper.

His prize for his first day of being an Awakened: nine Credits, a new Skill, and a helmet.

Having Stat Points in Wisdom wasn’t going to help Ventex too much while he was outside the Dungeon, so he used Respec to have more Stat Points in Strength, Dexterity, and Endurance and ran home. The points in Dexterity helped him weave through the evening crowd, and Endurance let him run the whole way without taking a break.

The bakery had very few customers during the evening and instead focused on making bread for vendors and restaurants. Upon entering, Ventex saw his mother’s head shoot up, followed by a deep exhale.

“How was your first day as an Awakened?” Ventex’s father asked. He sat to the side of the door, just out of Ventex’s view when he entered the bakery.

“It was awesome,” Ventex said. “I got the Skill: Telekinesis, then went into the Toxic Slime Dungeon and killed the second floor Boss. I’m Level six!”

“You did what?!” Maetha shouted from behind the counter. She walked around and approached Ventex, ready to grab his ear. Ventex ran away, dodging her and making his way up the stairs to the second floor. “The Dungeons are dangerous! You can’t go in them!”

Ventex ignored her and went straight to the kitchen. He started thinking about how hungry and thirsty he was, and he didn’t want to listen to his mother’s nagging about the Dungeon. He acknowledged that people died in the Dungeons every day, but he firmly believed those were people who were seeking the underleveled multiplier that came from killing a Mob or Boss that was above their Level.

A stamina restoration potion had a thirty percent chance of being Dropped by a Level 15 toxic slime if it was killed by a Level 15 Awakened. However, if a Level 5 Awakened killed a Level 15 Mob, the Drop chance would be sixty percent. If a Boss was Level 15 and its treasure chest normally contained 15 silver coins, a Level 5 Awakened would get 30 silver coins for defeating it.

Ventex was satisfied with his earnings without trying to get the underleveled multiplier. He would clear the Orbya Dungeons, then move to the next city and conquer their Dungeons. With the Respec System, he would be able to respecialize for every Dungeon along the way.

There was something Ventex wanted that was much more grand than money. Millions thought about it, thousands attempted it at least once in their life, but less than ten people were seriously going for it. Ventex chased after a dream: the fabled Level-Cap, Level 1,000.
