Prologue

Rage still gripped him as he found himself back in that endless library. Instead of warping the room to fit his taste as he had in the past, he started destroying it. Shelves twisted and exploded. The shredded books rained down as fire started to engulf everything.

He could hear that incompetent reaper talking in that mechanical voice but it faded to the background as he ignored it. He didn’t know why he thought seeing this place in ruins would make him feel any better when destroying worlds hadn’t. He loathed not just this limbo, this reaper, or this last life he had lived. No he loathed the entirety of this existence of rebirths that somehow came to be when he should have finally had his peace.

He willed everything away. No more reaper frantically trying to get him to calm down. No more ridiculous library. No more rebirths. He floated there in the nothingness for a time. It could have been seconds or eons he couldn’t tell. For the first time in several lifetimes he finally felt like he could take a breath.

‘Breathing in a place with no air. I'm definitely well adjusted. I guess I’ll craft my peace that I couldn’t ever find.”

He began to create the place his mind would go to in his first life when he felt overwhelmed. The walls of the cave came first. Unnaturally smooth and perfecting round. The cave ceiling came next. A near perfect dome dotted with stalactites that dripped water into the center of the cave where he made a crystal clear pool of water. The floor he made was uneven and rough, but lacked any jagged edges.

He walked along the edge of his cave. Running his hand along the wall as he went. Enjoying the feeling of the smooth stone. The only sounds in his cave were that of the water droplets trickling off the stalactites and landing in the pool. Calling to him. He turned towards the pool and walked the fifty feet from the cave wall and straight into the water.

The gentle slope with a sandy shore was on the other half of the pool, so he plunged straight in as he walked off the edge. He slowly floated to the surface on his back. The sound of the water droplets soothing him as his mind began to wander.
