Chapter 7: What is The Mass Extermination Event?

The next day, Arsène had a pretty hard time getting up as he was tired. He is tired most of the time, however this time is an exception. The battle with Marbas was exhausting since Marbas had used an ability or technique that outright pulled the energy Arsène had in his body. Though Arsène may have been exaggerating it, it was more like Arsène felt his power and strength deplete after Marbas cast some spell or ability of sorts.

But that wasn’t Arsène’s main concern. What concerned Arsène is how he was going to manage going to school in such a horrid condition. He could barely walk properly, now he had to go to school. Of course, maybe his day would lighten up somehow if he talked to Mukyu, which seemed unlikely but it’s worth a shot.

Arsène got up, sitting on his bed as he scratched his head. He let out a yawn as he looked around. He found Ethan, sleeping on the other side of the bed, fast asleep. Arsène sighed, and turned, sitting on the side of the bed. He looks around for a moment, then at the digital clock, around 6 o’clock in the morning. He seemed to have gotten up a little earlier than usual.

It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, waking up early in the morning is in fact considered good. But that doesn’t mean the exhaustion will leave his body anytime soon. Nonetheless, he needed to get up and get ready for school.

He got off the bed, walking to the bathroom to freshen up. At the same time, he quickly went to the closet to grab a towel and his uniform. As he made his way into the bathroom, he took a single glance back at the bed. Ethan was still fast asleep and didn’t seemed to even have moved an inch. He nods as he enters the bathroom.

To start the day off, Arsène quickly brushed his teeth and washed his face to feel more active and less tired. Despite that, he still somewhat felt drowsy but he just clapped his cheeks with his hands and got to work.

He quickly finished taking a shower, then dried his hair. He waited a few minutes before changing into his uniform. He wears the uniform and makes sure there are no errors or folds on it. He stood in front of the mirror, hiding the weird eye with his hair as he smiled at his reflection. Today should be a good day.

As Arsène opened the bathroom door and stood there, he saw Ethan standing outside. Ethan looked like he slept well as he didn’t have any eye bags or didn’t seem to be tired even a bit. Ethan smiled, waving his hand as he held a towel and uniform in the other hand.

“Good morning Arsène. I hope you slept well.”

Arsène nodded, smiling as he greeted Ethan.

“Good morning to you too, Ethan. Did you sleep well?”

Ethan nodded back, as he stretched his arms.

“I slept fine. I didn’t have any problems sleeping on the bed and all was good.”

Arsène smiled as he walked out of the bathroom and gave way to Ethan. He would quickly take a glance at the digital clock. Around 6:30. They only had around a whole hour before the classes began. Ethan had also taken a glance at the time, quickly walking into the bathroom and closing the door behind him.

Arsène looked at the door for a few seconds, before turning and walking to the study table at the corner of the room. He quickly took a seat and took his tablet out of his bag, turning it on and swiping through some school announcements. He stopped as he looked at the messages sent by Mukyu, the list of topics and chapters Arsène had missed yesterday along with some homework.

Arsène sighed and immediately got to work, typing away on his laptop as he as glanced back and forth from the tablet to the laptop. Despite the topics feeling new to Arsène and almost alien like, they were mere facts and knowledge to others. Maybe it was due to the lack of his past memories that he isn’t able to remember or know these facts.

Arsène continued typing, his fingers flying across the keyboard, eyes scanning over the screen as he watches what he is typing. Making sure there are no error or mistypes. He would occasionally stop typing to see whats written in the tablet, checking to see if he is going off topic or making mistakes.

A few minutes pass as Arsène finally finishes what he was doing. He rests his hands on the desk as the document gets saved. He rests his head back as he lets out a sigh. He was relieved that there was only one homework yesterday, or else he might have gotten in trouble since he couldn’t have completed the work in the morning alone.

Arsène turns his head to look as the bathroom door opens, Ethan stepping out in his uniform, checking if everything is right. He looks up at Arsène, smiling.

“Busy with work?”

Arsène sighs, closing the laptop as he stands up and steps away from his desk. He stretches his arms as he walks up to his bag. He picks up his bag as he looks at Ethan, smiling.

“Yeah, but I am done with the current work.”

Ethan nods, looking at Arsène’s bag.

“I had completed my work yesterday itself.”

He then looks Arsène in the eyes.

“You know, when you were resting in your room.”

Arsène nods, remembering the time he spent all afternoon trying to fall asleep but failing. He walks towards the door, looking around, making sure he didn’t forget anything. He nods as he looks at Ethan.

“Let’s go then, we don’t want to be late now, do we?”

Ethan nods and walks towards Arsène.

“You right, lets get going. It’s best to be early than to be sorry later.”

A few minutes pass as Ethan and Arsène walk through the corridors filled with students. Ethan slowed down as he read the number and nameplates of the classroom. He came to a full halt as he turned and stood in front of a classroom door.

“Arsène, this is my classroom.”

Arsène turned around to look at Ethan, a smile painted on his face.

“Ah, I see. I didn’t know we were different classes.”

Ethan nodded, looking back at Arsène.

“Well, I guess it would make sense why we didn’t meet or see each other before. Since we weren’t the same class to begin with.”

Ethan said as the door to the classroom slid open, and he stepped inside. He turned and took one last glance at Arsène, a gentle smile on his face.

“I will be seeing you in the evening then. Bye and take care.”

Ethan said as the door closed, leaving Arsène standing in the corridor with students walking about and talking. Arsène then turned to walk a few centimeters, stopping in front of his class. Despite being different classes, Arsène’s and Ethan’s classrooms were next to each other. This made sense since they both would be similar in age.

Arsène entered the classroom, looking around as most of the students were minding their own business. Some were chatting, some were looking at either their phones or work tablets. While a few noticed Arsène walk into the classroom. Arsène took another look around the room, he smiles as he spots Mukyu sitting in his desk, his eyes facing down and looking at something below or under the desk. Arsène slowly walked through, before settling down in his desk.

“Heya, how are you doing?”

Mukyu for a moment takes his eyes off the phone he was playing on and looks at Arsène. He had his normal and usual poker face on, no signs of emotions on the surface. He nodded and turned back to playing his game.

“I am fine. You seem to have finally have a sense of time and responsibility.”

Arsène raised a brow, looking at Mukyu with confusion.

“What do you mean?”

Mukyu didn’t bother looking at Arsène, just continuing to play his game as he fingers flew across the screen.

“You came on time, unlike usually where you are late and always 10 minutes behind.”

Arsène looked offended but smiled nervously.

“Well what can I say..? The environment and the school just felt new to me was all..”

Mukyu looked up from the phone, looking at the front of the class as the teacher walked in.

“Well, you probably should remember what the school is life.”

Mukyu turns to look at Arsène, a look of nothingness painted all over his face.

“You would still be used to the school since Numbered Children have been going to this school for ages now.”

Arsène didn’t respond, turning his head and looking down at his lap. He wasn’t sure how to respond, since he couldn’t just randomly tell Mukyu that he has amnesia or that he doesn’t have his memories or doesn’t remember anything about his past. Though Arsène could just lie that he has a bad memory or dementia. But he thinks Mukyu wouldn’t buy it. Thus, Arsène stuck to the idea of staying silent rather than making an excuse. Then most of the students rose up from their seats as the teacher enters the class. But some people didn’t, like the students in the back or Mukyu, basically those who didn’t give a damn. The teacher entered the class and it was Vanessa. Arsène stayed silent as Vanessa took a glance at him then started teaching the class. Today’s first topic or subject was History.

Arsène listened to the class, noting down everything in his tablet. He then shifted back and forth as he felt tired and sleepy, he would close his eyes for a split moment, trying to doze off without getting caught.

“Arsène!”

Arsène’s eyes opened with quick instinct as he heard someone call out his name. He turned to look up to see Vanessa looking at him and some other students. Arsène stood up, looking around for a moment then at Vanessa.

“Arsène. Tell me, what exactly caused the Mass Extinction event?”

Arsène raised a brow.

“Mass Extinction event?”

He thought for a moment. Did he know about this? Some part of the name or title felt familiar but he was unsure what. But he knew that he didn’t know a thing about this event. He nervously smiled as he looked at Vanessa.

“Nessa- I mean, Miss Vanessa, I am not sure.”

Vanessa let out a deep sigh before looking at Arsène with a look of disappointment. She used her hand to gesture Arsène to sit down.

“Sit down, this time, listen and remember carefully.”

Arsène let out a sigh of relief as he settled down, looking around to make sure no one was talking about him, fortunately everyone was minding their own business. Arsène then looked at the front of the class, at Vanessa. Vanessa clear her throat as she looked at the class, looking at everyone.

“Alright, listen up class. Since some of you are unsure about what the Mass Extinction event is, I will explain it again.”

Vanessa looks at Arsène before starting off.

“Around a few decades ago, a strange event took place. During this said event, 99% percent of the world’s population disappeared. It was unsure whether they just disappeared or disintegrated or randomly died. That and most of the land in our world just randomly disappeared, disintegrating into the air.”

Arsène’s eyes widened. That many people and land randomly disappeared? That sounds either like a fantasy or sci-fi. It was outright impossible for so many people and so much land to randomly disappear into thin air!

“No one is sure what caused the event to occur but scientists doubt or think some change happened in our universe for such an event to occur, causing so many causalities.”

Vanessa then paused as she looked at the time, then grabbing her tablet and looking at the class.

“Story time is over. Now time to show me your homework, one at a time.”

Vanessa said as she sat down and grabbed her tablet. Arsène on the other hand was outright either shocked or confused, maybe both. He just couldn’t believe what he heard. People randomly disappearing into thin air along with land? It sounded impossible and was theoretically impossible.

A few minutes pass as Vanessa checks everyone’s work and continues with her class. But Arsène all the while was stuck in a process of thought. He was just unsure how to fathom all of this information. First the Numbered Children documents that Yami gave Arsène last week. And now this. What has happened and why doesn’t Arsène remember his past or any of this?

So many questions are formed by the answers already given. The more answers he got, the more questions he has. Then Vanessa looks at the time as she then got up, grabbing her stuff as she walked out of the class. She halted for a moment and turned her head to look at Arsène for a moment. She doesn’t say a word and just walks out.

Arsène looks back at Vanessa, not saying a word. He then sighs as he turns to look at Mukyu, he was busy and was in his own world.

“I hope the day doesn’t get anymore complicated..”

Arsène mumbled to himself.
