Levi floated in the kelp surrounding the grotto entrance, wincing at the screams of his mate. The midwife had sent him out ours ago and had forbade him from entering the sea cave.
“Don’t worry old timer, Ammora is a strong mermaid.” Said Tyell his oldest friend as he patted the man on the back.
“It’s killing me not knowing…” Levi started
“Whether you’re having a little serpent brat or a darling mermaid?” Tyell interrupted.
Levi cowered at the sound of the mermaid’s birthing wails.
“Either way I’m fine with it, its Ammora I worry about. She wants so badly for a siren to please her sisters.” Said Levi.
“Aye, I know they’ve been known to pressure each other into birthing daughters damn mermaids.” Tyell stated flaring his gills.
A few Hours later
“It’s impossible!!!” a shrill voice screamed from within the grotto. Levi abandoned his rest amongst the kelp and swam fervently into the cave.
“What is it Irena?” He shouted entering the chamber.
“Levi, its…” Irena turned to him, with a bundle in her arms.

“What is it Irena, a serpent or a siren?” Levi shouted.
The older mermaid gazed into the bundle she held for a moment before raising her eyes to meet his. “It’s both brother.” She beckoned him to her as she pulled back the seaweed around the newborn. Levi carefully maneuvered his scaly fin through the calm water of the grotto, and peered into the bundle.
It was clear as the sun in the sky as he looked down at his first child. The boy had the scales of serpent adorning his skin in scarce patches. They were a dull and deep blue like Levi’s own. The child’s fin too was covered in these serpent scales ending in a fanlike fluke made of thick skin. The infant had the smallest patch of hair on his head that Levi had ever seen. His hair ink black with blue mixed in, the new father’s eyes fell upon those of his son. They were both a mixture of green and blue, and flecked around the edges he saw something that changed everything. The little sea serpent had within those blue green eyes specks of shining silver. A trait unique to the mermaids who were born with the gift of a siren’s voice.
His wife stirred from her limp birthing position at the surface of the pool, drifting over to him. “He is destined to be truly powerful, just like his father.” Ammora wrapped her arms around the shoulders of her mate as they both floated there, her black hair like a cloud of ink surrounding them.
“This child should not exist, this shouldn’t be possi-” Levi started.
“I know my dear, which worries me deeply.” Ammora interjected as she looked down at her son, struggling to escape the midwife’s arms. “The things that fate has in store for this little one must surely be great.” She said before taking him from her friend.
