7. Vermillion city tournament

7. Vermillion city tournament

The sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm glow over the Vermillion City Stadium as Kenji made his way through the entrance gates. The massive arena was alive with the energy of countless trainers and their Pokémon, all buzzing with anticipation for the tournament’s kickoff. The stadium was a blend of steel and glass, modern yet retaining a certain ruggedness that suited its purpose. Massive banners fluttered in the breeze, each one displaying the symbols of various Pokémon regions—Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and beyond.

As Kenji entered the main courtyard, he took in the diverse crowd around him. Trainers from every region were mingling, each with their own unique style and Pokémon. There were tall, muscular trainers from Unova with their towering Emboars, and lithe, agile trainers from Alola with their nimble Decidueyes. Kenji hadn’t seen some of these Pokémon up close before, and he couldn’t help but feel a mixture of awe and excitement. However, one Pokémon caught his eye more than the others—a sleek, blue and silver Lucario standing confidently beside its trainer. Lucario's piercing red eyes met Kenji’s for a brief moment, and he felt a chill run down his spine. The aura emanating from Lucario was palpable, almost like a physical force. It was clear this Pokémon was something special, and Kenji made a mental note to keep an eye on that trainer.

Suddenly, the loudspeakers crackled to life, and a booming voice filled the stadium. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Vermillion City Tournament! We’ve got an exciting lineup of battles for you today, with trainers from all across the world ready to prove their worth! First up, we have Kenji from Celadon City, Kanto, facing off against Marcus from Hoenn! This is sure to be a clash of titans, folks!”

Kenji’s heart raced as he heard his name called. The time had come. He made his way toward the battlefield, a massive arena surrounded by towering bleachers filled with cheering spectators. The ground was a mix of rock and dirt, with patches of grass here and there, making it a versatile battlefield for various types of Pokémon.

Across the field, Marcus, his opponent from Hoenn, stood ready. He was a tall, broad-shouldered man with a confident smirk on his face. His muscles bulged under his sleeveless shirt, and his sun-bleached hair was tied back into a ponytail. He gave Kenji a cocky salute, as if he’d already won.

“Alright, let’s make this quick!” Marcus called out, pulling a Pokéball from his belt. “I’ve got places to be and titles to win!”

Kenji didn’t respond, instead focusing on the task at hand. He knew he had to stay calm and focused. He pulled out his first Pokéball and glanced down at it briefly before throwing it into the air. “Let’s go, Venusaur!”

The massive, dinosaur-like Pokémon appeared with a roar, the large flower on its back fully bloomed and swaying slightly as it took its battle stance. The crowd erupted into cheers, excited to see the evolved form of one of Kanto’s most iconic Pokémon.

Marcus grinned and tossed his own Pokéball. “Swampert, let’s show them what we’re made of!”

The Pokéball burst open, and out came a Swampert—a hulking, amphibious Pokémon with muscular arms and a powerful tail. It slammed its fists into the ground, causing the earth to tremble slightly. The announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers, “And in the first round, it’s Venusaur versus Swampert! Kanto against Hoenn! Who will prevail?”

The battle began with Swampert charging forward, its heavy footfalls shaking the ground. “Swampert, use Ice Beam!” Marcus shouted.

Swampert opened its mouth, and a beam of freezing energy shot toward Venusaur. Kenji reacted quickly. “Venusaur, dodge and use Razor Leaf!”

Venusaur narrowly avoided the Ice Beam, the freezing energy grazing one of its vines, leaving a trail of frost. In retaliation, it whipped its large leaves forward, sending a barrage of razor-sharp leaves hurtling toward Swampert. The leaves slashed into Swampert’s tough hide, leaving thin cuts that began to bleed slightly.

“Not bad,” Marcus admitted, his grin widening. “But we’re just getting started! Swampert, Earthquake!”

Swampert leaped into the air and came crashing down, its fists slamming into the ground. The entire battlefield shook violently as cracks spread out from the impact, the ground heaving up in waves. Venusaur struggled to keep its footing, but the force of the Earthquake sent it tumbling backward, slamming into the ground with a heavy thud.

Kenji gritted his teeth. “Hang in there, Venusaur! Use Power Whip!”

Venusaur roared as it rose to its feet, its vines extending with incredible speed. The thick vines lashed out, wrapping around Swampert and lifting it off the ground. With a powerful flick, Venusaur slammed Swampert into the ground, sending a shockwave through the battlefield. Swampert let out a pained cry as the air was knocked out of it.

“Don’t let up, Venusaur! Finish it with another Power Whip!” Kenji commanded.

Venusaur’s vines moved with terrifying speed once more, wrapping around Swampert’s body. But Marcus wasn’t giving up just yet. “Swampert, counter with Ice Punch!”

Swampert’s fist glowed with a frigid blue energy as it pulled back one arm and smashed it into Venusaur’s vine. The ice began to spread along the vine, but before it could reach Venusaur, the vine snapped back, sending Swampert crashing into the dirt once more. Swampert struggled to rise, its body battered and bruised, but it was clear the fight had taken its toll. With a final roar, it collapsed onto the battlefield, unconscious.

The crowd erupted into applause as the announcer declared, “Swampert is unable to battle! The winner of the first round is Venusaur!”

Kenji sighed in relief but quickly refocused. This was just the first round, and he knew Marcus wasn’t going to go down easily. That Swampert must have been on a higher level than Venusaur since it withstood three grass-Type attacks.

Marcus recalled his fallen Swampert and smirked, clearly unbothered by the loss. “Impressive, but let’s see how you handle this! Mightyena, you’re up!”

He tossed another Pokéball, and out came Mightyena—a dark, hyena-like Pokémon with gleaming red eyes and sharp fangs. It snarled, its fur bristling as it prepared to attack.

Kenji knew Venusaur had taken some damage, so he decided to switch things up. “Venusaur, return! Pidgeotto, I choose you!”

With a flash of light, Pidgeotto appeared, flapping its wings and letting out a sharp cry. It soared high above the battlefield, ready for the next round.

“Let’s make this quick,” Marcus sneered. “Mightyena, Crunch!”

Mightyena darted forward with incredible speed, its fangs bared as it leaped toward Pidgeotto. But Pidgeotto was faster. “Pidgeotto, Wing Attack!” Kenji commanded.

Pidgeotto swooped down, its wings glowing with energy as it struck Mightyena with a powerful slash. Mightyena yelped in pain as it was knocked back, but it quickly recovered and lunged again. This time, it managed to sink its fangs into Pidgeotto’s wing, drawing blood.

Pidgeotto screeched in pain, but Kenji wasn’t about to let up. “Shake it off and use Gust!”

Pidgeotto flapped its wings furiously, creating a powerful whirlwind that sent Mightyena flying backward, its grip loosening. Mightyena crashed into the ground, but it was far from finished. It quickly got back on its feet, snarling viciously.

“Let’s end this! Pidgeotto, use Quick Attack!” Kenji ordered.

Pidgeotto darted forward at blinding speed, slamming into Mightyena with all its might. The impact was devastating, and Mightyena was sent skidding across the ground, unconscious.

“Mightyena is unable to battle! Pidgeotto wins round two!” the announcer’s voice boomed.

The crowd roared with approval, and Kenji felt a surge of confidence. But Marcus wasn’t done yet. He recalled Mightyena and pulled out his final Pokéball, a confident grin on his face.

“You’ve done well, but this is where it ends. Loudred, show them what we’ve got!” Marcus shouted as he threw the Pokéball.

With a flash of light, Loudred appeared—a large, purple Pokémon with huge, gaping ears and a booming voice. It let out a deafening roar, causing the crowd to cover their ears.

Kenji knew he had to be careful. “Pidgeotto, return! Haunter, let’s finish this!”

Haunter materialized from the shadows, its mischievous grin and glowing eyes sending a chill through the stadium. The crowd murmured in anticipation as the final round began.

“Loudred, Hyper Voice!” Marcus commanded.

Loudred unleashed a powerful soundwave, the very air vibrating with the force of the attack. The ground shook as the sound wave surged toward Haunter, threatening to tear it apart.

But Haunter simply grinned wider. “Normal-Type moves don't affect Haunter! Haunter, use Sucker Punch!” Kenji shouted.

Haunter gathered dark energy in its hands, darting forward with blinding speed. It punched Loudred, the dark energy colliding, sending a shockwave across the battlefield. Loudred staggered back, reeling from the impact. The crowd gasped as the powerful Dark-type attack visibly damaged Marcus’s Loudred.

Marcus scowled, realizing the challenge before him. “Damn it! Loudred, try a different tactic—use Bite!”

Loudred lunged forward with its jaws wide open, teeth bared, aiming to chomp down on Haunter. However, before it could land the attack, Haunter flickered and vanished into thin air, reappearing behind Loudred with a sinister laugh.

Kenji smirked. “Haunter, show them who’s boss! Use Hypnosis!”

Haunter’s eyes began to glow with a haunting light as it hovered closer to Loudred. The eerie glow seemed to draw Loudred’s gaze, pulling it into a trance. Loudred’s growls grew quieter as its eyelids drooped, and in a matter of seconds, it collapsed to the ground, fast asleep.

The crowd was on the edge of their seats, the tension palpable. Kenji wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip by.

“Now, Haunter! Finish this with another Sucker Punch!”

“Wake up Loudred! Use Bite!” Marcus shouted, but didn’t get a response.

With Loudred asleep and vulnerable, Haunter wasted no time. It gathered dark energy in its spectral hands, the swirling energy on its hands growing larger and more ominous by the second. Haunter cackled as it launched its fists directly at Loudred.

The attack hit Loudred square in the chest, and the force of the impact was tremendous. Loudred’s eyes shot open in pain, but it was too late. The Sucker Punch’s dark energy surged through its body, leaving it utterly defeated. With a final, pained groan, Loudred slumped to the ground, unconscious.

The announcer’s voice echoed through the stadium. “Loudred is unable to battle! The winner of this match is Kenji from Celadon City!”

The crowd erupted in cheers, the sound almost deafening as they celebrated Kenji’s victory. Marcus gritted his teeth in frustration, recalling his fallen Loudred with a scowl. He didn’t bother with a final word, simply turning and walking off the field in defeat.

Kenji stood in the center of the battlefield, his heart pounding with exhilaration. He had done it—he had won his first battle in the Vermillion City Tournament. Haunter floated beside him, still grinning that mischievous grin, clearly proud of its performance.

“Well done, Haunter,” Kenji said, giving his partner a fist bump in appreciation. “You really showed them what we’re made of.”

Haunter chuckled, its eerie voice carrying a sense of satisfaction. As Kenji looked around the cheering stadium, he couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride. His team was strong—stronger than ever before—and this victory was just the beginning.

But there was still much more to come. With his first battle behind him, Kenji knew he had to stay focused. The tournament had just begun, and the next challengers would be even tougher. But for now, he allowed himself to savor the moment, basking in the glory of his hard-earned win.

As the crowd continued to cheer, Kenji looked at Haunter and gave him a small, confident nod. He walked off the battlefield, feeling more ready than ever for whatever came next.

The next battles would be even tougher, but Kenji was prepared. His journey through Vermillion City had only just begun, and he was determined to prove that he was a trainer to be reckoned with.

After his victory, Kenji and Haunter made their way to the VIP seats in the stadium, where other trainers who had either won their battles or were awaiting their turns were gathered. The view from the seats was exceptional, offering a clear look at the battlefield below where the next matches were set to take place. As they found their spot, Haunter floating idly beside him, Kenji scanned the crowd and his eyes widened when he recognized a familiar face.

It was Axel—the trainer he had faced after leaving Pewter City. Axel had a confident air about him, his Fearow nowhere in sight, but something else caught Kenji's attention. Attached to Axel's belt was the gleaming Tera Orb.

"Axel!" Kenji called out, waving.

Axel turned and, upon recognizing Kenji, offered a smirk. "Well, well, if it isn’t the guy who gave me a run for my money back in Pewter. I heard about your battle at the Gym—nice work out there."

Kenji grinned, taking a seat beside him. "Thanks. I’ve been training hard. Since i left, i’ve been wondering if you eventually caught that Charmander you were looking for. But actually, i’m jealous of your Tera Orb."

Axel tapped the Tera Orb on his belt, pride evident in his expression. "I didn't manage to find that Charmander. As for the Tera Orb, it's a game-changer, that’s for sure. Fearow will be tearing through the competition with it."

Kenji nodded, feeling a pang of envy as he looked at the Tera Orb. "Must be incredible. I’ve been hoping to get one myself. I can’t imagine how much stronger my team would be with it."

Axel chuckled. "It’s worth the effort, believe me. Maybe you’ll get your chance here in Vermillion if you keep winning."

Kenji’s determination only grew at Axel’s words. He would win this tournament—there was no other option. But for now, he focused on the matches below, pulling out a notebook to jot down anything interesting he observed. Haunter, meanwhile, hovered close, watching the battles with an intense gaze.

The next match featured the trainer from Sinnoh wielding his Lucario against another trainer with a massive Drapion. Kenji’s eyes were glued to the fight, watching Lucario’s swift movements and precise strikes with fascination. Drapion, on the other hand, was a powerhouse, using its massive claws to block and counter every move Lucario made. The clash of power and precision was mesmerizing.

"That Lucario’s no joke," Axel remarked, leaning forward as the battle raged on. "But Drapion’s a tough nut to crack. This could go either way."

Kenji nodded, scribbling down notes. "Lucario’s using a lot of speed and close-range attacks. It’s probably going to try and get in a final blow with Aura Sphere or something similar."

As if on cue, Lucario unleashed a powerful Aura Sphere, its energy swirling with a bright blue light. Drapion braced itself, crossing its claws to absorb the impact, but the sheer force of the attack pushed it back, leaving it vulnerable to a follow-up strike. The crowd erupted as Lucario finally managed to land a decisive blow, knocking Drapion out.

Kenji leaned back, exhaling in awe. "That was intense. I’ve never seen a Lucario up close before. It’s even more impressive in person."

Axel grinned. "Wait till you see what’s next. It’s my turn."

With that, Axel stood and made his way down to the arena. Kenji watched as his rival took his place, curiosity piqued. Axel didn’t send out Fearow this time, instead releasing a Pokémon that Kenji had never seen before. It was a large, dog-like creature with a rugged appearance and a fierce demeanor.

Kenji quickly pulled out his Pokédex. "Mabosstiff, the Boss Pokémon. Mabosstiff intimidates its opponents with its powerful bark and overwhelming presence."

"Interesting," Kenji muttered, intrigued.

Axel’s opponent was a trainer from Johto called Philip, and he sent out a fierce-looking Gyarados, its serpentine body coiling as it let out a mighty roar. The tension in the stadium was palpable as the battle commenced.

"Gyarados, Hydro Pump!" the Johto trainer commanded.

Gyarados unleashed a torrent of water with incredible force, aiming straight at Mabosstiff. But Axel was unfazed.

"Mabosstiff, use Thunder Fang!"

Mabosstiff’s fangs crackled with electricity as it lunged forward, dodging the Hydro Pump with impressive agility. Its jaws clamped down on Gyarados with a thunderous bite, sending a surge of electricity through the Water-type Pokémon’s body. Gyarados roared in pain, but it wasn’t out yet.

"Now, it’s time to end this!" Axel declared, raising his Tera Orb high. "Let’s show them the true power of Tera Type! Go, Mabosstiff!"

The Tera Orb glowed brightly as Axel activated it, sending a beam of light towards Mabosstiff. In an instant, Mabosstiff’s form shifted, its fur sparking with electric energy as it transformed into an Electric-type. The crowd gasped in amazement as the transformation completed.

"Thunder Fang, again!" Axel commanded.

With its newfound Electric-type power, Mabosstiff charged forward, its fangs sparking with even greater intensity. It bit down on Gyarados once more, this time with devastating effect. The Electric-type energy coursed through Gyarados, overwhelming it completely. Gyarados let out one final, pained roar before collapsing to the ground, knocked out cold.

The stadium erupted into cheers as Axel stood victorious. Kenji sat in stunned silence, completely awestruck by what he had just witnessed.

"That…was incredible," Kenji muttered, unable to tear his eyes away from the battlefield.

Axel recalled Mabosstiff with a confident smirk, looking up at the VIP seats. He caught Kenji’s eye and gave him a knowing nod, as if to say, *This is what the Tera Orb can do.*

Kenji clenched his fists, determination burning in his chest. He wanted that power, wanted to elevate his team to the next level. The Vermillion City Tournament was his chance to prove himself and earn a Tera Orb of his own.

After that, the trainer from Johto, wasted no time, quickly releasing his next Pokémon, an Ariados. The spider-like Pokémon clicked its pincers, its eyes gleaming with a predatory hunger. "Ariados, let’s show them what we can do!"

Axel, unfazed, tossed his Pokéball into the air. "Let’s get this started, Marowak!"

The bone-clad Marowak emerged, spinning its bone club in one hand. It eyed Ariados with a calm, calculating gaze, ready for battle.

Philip initiated the attack. "Ariados, use Shadow Sneak!"Ariados vanished into its own shadow, slithering across the ground at incredible speed. The shadow darted toward Marowak, reappearing as Ariados launched a surprise attack. Its claws glowed with dark energy as it slashed at Marowak’s side. Marowak grunted as the attack connected, leaving a deep cut that oozed blood.

But Axel was quick to counter. "Marowak, hit it back with Fire Punch!"Marowak's fist ignited in flames, and it swung a fiery punch at Ariados before it could retreat. The punch connected squarely with Ariados’ body, sending it skidding back, its carapace scorched and cracked.

"Bonemerang, now!" Axel commanded. Marowak spun its bone club like a boomerang and hurled it with deadly precision. The club whirred through the air, striking Ariados with a sickening thud before circling back to Marowak’s hand. The impact sent Ariados crashing into the ground, its body twitching before it fainted.

"That’s one more down," Axel said confidently, recalling Marowak and preparing for the next round.

Kenji leaned forward in his seat, impressed by the sheer power of Marowak’s attacks. "Axel’s not messing around. Marowak took that hit and turned it around in an instant."

The trainer from Johto gritted his teeth and recalled his fallen Ariados. "Nice move, but you won’t be so lucky with this one. Go, Noctowl!"

The majestic owl Pokémon soared into the arena, its wings spread wide as it let out a haunting cry. Noctowl’s eyes glowed with a fierce determination, ready to avenge its fallen comrade.

Axel smirked. "Two can play the flying game. Fearow, let’s go!"

Fearow burst out of its Pokéball, its wings flaring as it let out a shrill cry. The crowd roared with excitement as the two Flying-type Pokémon faced off, circling each other in the air.

"Noctowl, use Hypnosis!" Philip shouted. Noctowl’s eyes glowed with a hypnotic light, and it focused the energy on Fearow. The light waves began to pulse toward Fearow, attempting to lull it into a deep sleep.

Axel, however, was ready. "Fearow, go through it with Aerial Ace!"

Fearow’s body glowed with a white light as it went downward at high speed, cutting through the air with incredible force. The move broke through the Hypnosis waves and slammed into Noctowl’s chest with a brutal impact, sending the owl Pokémon tumbling through the air.

"Noctowl, recover and use Air Slash!" Philip commanded, desperate to regain control.

Noctowl flapped its wings furiously, steadying itself in the air before launching a series of sharp wind blades at Fearow. The blades struck true, cutting into Fearow’s wings and body, drawing blood as they did.

Fearow screeched in pain, but Axel wasn’t deterred. "Don’t let up, Fearow! Pursuit, now!"

Fearow darted forward, its speed doubling as it pursued Noctowl relentlessly. The dark energy from the Pursuit attack crackled around its beak as it closed in on its prey.

"Take Down, Noctowl!" Philip yelled, trying to meet the attack head-on.

Noctowl charged at Fearow, its body glowing with energy as it prepared to collide with Fearow. But Fearow was faster, darting to the side and striking Noctowl from behind with a savage Pursuit. The impact was devastating, knocking Noctowl out of the sky and sending it crashing into the ground.

Noctowl lay motionless, its feathers ruffled and wings bent at awkward angles. The crowd went silent for a moment before erupting into cheers, amazed by the intensity of the battle.

Axel smirked as Fearow circled back to him, its beak dripping with blood but its eyes gleaming with victory. "And that’s game."

Kenji watched in awe, his heart racing from the sheer ferocity of the battles. "Axel’s Fearow is a beast… That Pursuit was brutal."

Philip recalled his defeated Noctowl, sighing in defeat. "You’re good, Axel. I’ll give you that."

Axel nodded. "You put up a decent fight. But I’ve got bigger fish to fry.”

As Axel made his way back to the seats, Kenji could only think of one thing—winning this tournament was no longer just about the competition. It was about the future of his journey, his bond with his Pokémon, and the power that would come with it.

"I’m going to win this," Kenji whispered to Haunter, his voice filled with resolve. "We’re going to get that Tera Orb, no matter what it takes."

Haunter grinned beside him, its eerie laugh echoing in agreement. The path ahead was clear—Kenji just needed to walk it.

As the crowd buzzed with excitement and the arena lights dimmed slightly between rounds, Axel stretched his arms and glanced at his Mabosstiff, who sat loyally by his side. The muscular, dark-furred Pokémon had a satisfied look on its face after its recent victory.

"Let’s grab a drink Kenji," Axel said, patting Mabosstiff on the head. The Pokémon barked in agreement, its tongue lolling out happily.

Kenji, still sitting in the VIP section with Haunter floating nearby, nodded at Axel. "Sure thing. I’ll keep an eye on the board for when they announce the next matches."

Axel gave him a thumbs-up and made his way toward the concession stands. As he walked, other trainers and spectators whispered in admiration, recognizing the skilled trainer from Paldea who had just dominated his last battle. Mabosstiff walked beside him, its large frame and intimidating presence clearing a path through the crowd.

When Axel reached the stand, he ordered two beers, sliding the money across the counter. The vendor quickly handed him two frosty bottles, and Axel grabbed them, heading back to where Kenji was waiting.

Back at the VIP seats, Kenji was deep in thought, replaying the previous battles in his mind and considering his strategies for the upcoming rounds. Haunter, ever the playful ghost, phased in and out of shadows, occasionally hovering upside down in front of Kenji’s face to make him laugh.

Axel returned, passing one of the beers to Kenji. "Here. You’re gonna need it after watching all those brutal matches."

Kenji accepted the bottle with a grin, taking a swig. The cold beer was refreshing, and it helped calm his nerves as the anticipation for the next round built up. "Thanks, man. These battles are on another level. I’ve got to say, that Tera Orb is really something else. I can’t wait to get my hands on one."

Axel took a drink from his own bottle, leaning back in his seat. "Yeah, it’s a game changer, for sure. But remember, it’s not just about the Orb—it’s about how you use it. The trainers left in this tournament are no joke. You’ve gotta be smart, and sometimes that means not relying on a single gimmick."

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Kenji nodded, appreciating the advice. "I hear you. I’ve got some ideas for how to approach my next match, but I’ll need to stay sharp. We’re in the final eight now, so the real challenge is just beginning."

Axel glanced at the large screen overhead, which was starting to flash the names of the trainers who had qualified for the last eight. "Looks like they’re about to announce who’s left."

Kenji and Axel watched as the names appeared on the screen, accompanied by images of the trainers and their signature Pokémon:

1. Kenji from Kanto - Signature Pokémon: Haunter

2. Axel from Paldea - Signature Pokémon: Mabosstiff

3. Carmen from Kalos - Signature Pokémon: Greninja

4. Ryota from Johto - Signature Pokémon: Scizor

5. Elena from Sinnoh - Signature Pokémon: Garchomp

6. Taro from Hoenn - Signature Pokémon: Blaziken

7. Mila from Unova - Signature Pokémon: Zoroark

8. Viktor from Galar - Signature Pokémon: Corviknight

Kenji whistled softly, recognizing some of the names. "That’s a tough lineup. We’ve got some serious contenders here."

Axel chuckled. "Yeah, no kidding. But that just makes it more interesting. Nothing like a good challenge to keep you on your toes."

Kenji took another swig of his beer, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. "Here’s to the final eight. May the best trainer win."

Axel raised his bottle in a toast. "And may that trainer be one of us."

They clinked their bottles together, the sound drowned out by the roar of the crowd as the next matches were being prepared. As the anticipation grew for the upcoming battles, Kenji knew that whatever happened next, he was ready to give it everything he had.

As the crowd buzzed with excitement, the large screen above the arena flickered to life, showing the final eight trainers who had advanced to the next Stage. Each trainer would use two Pokémon from now on. The screen then began to display the pairs for the upcoming battles.

Pairs for the Quarterfinals:

1. Kenji vs. Elena

2. Axel vs. Ryota

3. Carmen vs. Viktor

4. Mila vs. Taro

Kenji and Axel exchanged glances as their names and opponents flashed across the screen.

"Elena from Sinnoh," Kenji muttered, recognizing the name. "She’s the one with the Garchomp, right?"

Axel nodded, a serious look on his face. "Yeah, and Garchomp’s no joke. They evolve into Garchomp after reaching a really high level. And they are fast, powerful, and can hit hard with both physical and special attacks. You’ll have to be on your A-game for that one."

Kenji took a deep breath, his mind already running through potential strategies. "I’ve got a plan. I think Venusaur might be my best bet against her. It’s going to be a tough battle, but I’m ready."

Axel smirked. "You’ll need to be. As for me, I’ve got Ryota from Johto. His Scizor is going to be a problem, but I’m confident Fearow and Mabosstiff can handle it."

Kenji grinned. "Sounds like we’ve both got our hands full."

As the crowd settled in for the first quarterfinal match, Kenji and Axel took their seats in the VIP section, their eyes glued to the battlefield below. The first battle was Carmen vs Viktor. The tension in the air was palpable as the first pair stepped into the arena.

As the trainers prepared to send out their Pokémon, Axel turned to Kenji with a thoughtful expression. "Hey, Kenji, I’ve been meaning to ask you something. Why haven’t you evolved Haunter yet? You know he can evolve into Gengar, right?"

Kenji blinked in surprise. "Evolve into Gengar? Just like that? I didn’t know that. How does it work?"

Axel explained, "Haunter evolves into Gengar through trade. If you’re up for it, we can trade right now, and you’ll get your Gengar. What do you think?"

Kenji looked at Haunter, who was floating beside him with an eager look in his eyes. "What do you say, buddy? Want to evolve?"

Haunter grinned mischievously and nodded enthusiastically.

"Alright then," Kenji agreed, excitement in his voice. "Let’s do it!"

The two trainers left the VIP section and headed to the Stadium's temporary Pokémon Center, where a trading machine was set up. Kenji placed Haunter’s Pokéball in the machine, while Axel did the same with his Marowak. With a beep, the trade was initiated, and the two Pokémon switched places. As the process completed, Haunter’s Pokéball began to glow brightly.

Kenji watched in awe as the Pokéball burst open, and Haunter emerged, surrounded by a radiant light. His form began to shift and grow, his body becoming larger and more defined until the light faded, revealing a powerful and imposing Gengar. The newly evolved Gengar cackled with delight, his red eyes gleaming with mischief.

"Wow," Kenji breathed, taking in the sight of his newly evolved Pokémon. "You look incredible, Gengar!"

Axel grinned, clearly impressed. "He’s a beast, Kenji. You’re going to love battling with him."

Kenji and Axel then placed their Pokémon back into the machine to trade them back. As soon as Gengar’s Pokéball was back in Kenji’s hands, he released the Ghost-type. Gengar immediately floated over to Kenji and enveloped him in a tight, affectionate hug.

Kenji chuckled, patting Gengar on the head. "Welcome back, buddy. You’ve always been strong, but now… now you’re on a whole new level."

Gengar grinned wide, his sharp teeth gleaming as he laughed, clearly thrilled with his new form.

Kenji looked into Gengar’s eyes, his tone full of affection. "We’ve been through a lot together, and I know you’ve got my back. Let’s show these trainers what we’re made of, okay?"

Gengar nodded eagerly, his body flickering with excitement.

Kenji and Axel returned to their seats, the excitement from Haunter’s evolution still buzzing between them. Kenji had informed the tournament staff of the evolution, ensuring Gengar was now officially registered as part of his team. As they settled back into the VIP section, Kenji couldn’t help but feel a surge of confidence with Gengar by his side. It was as if the Ghost-type’s newfound power had amplified his own.

The battle in the arena was still raging on. Carmen, with her sleek and agile Greninja, was locked in a fierce contest against Viktor’s sturdy and imposing Corviknight. The clash of Water Shurikens against Steel Wing sent sparks flying, each Pokémon refusing to give an inch. Kenji watched with bated breath as Greninja darted around the battlefield, trying to find an opening against the relentless Corviknight.

"This is intense," Axel commented, leaning forward in his seat. "Viktor’s Corviknight is like a wall. Greninja’s fast, but he’s having a hard time breaking through."

Kenji nodded, his eyes never leaving the battlefield. "Yeah, but Carmen’s not giving up. She’s trying to wear Corviknight down."

Just as Kenji said that, Carmen recalled Greninja and sent out her Talonflame, its flames crackling as it soared into the air with a fierce cry. Viktor responded by bringing out his Coalossal, the massive Rock-and-Fire-type Pokémon towering over the arena like a living mountain.

The crowd erupted into cheers, the anticipation of the coming clash palpable. Talonflame zipped through the air, launching fiery attacks that danced around Coalossal’s rocky form. Coalossal, however, was unfazed, retaliating with a powerful Rock Blast that sent Talonflame spiraling downwards. Despite Talonflame’s valiant efforts, Coalossal’s sheer power and durability proved too much, and Viktor claimed victory as Talonflame fainted, its wings smoldering. Then, Carmen sent out Greninja once again.

Kenji watched in awe, his heart pounding. "That was incredible," he murmured. "Viktor really knows how to use Coalossal’s strengths."

Axel nodded in agreement. "He’s a tough opponent, no doubt about it. But with Gengar on your side now, you’ve got a real edge."

Kenji glanced down at Gengar, who floated beside him, a mischievous grin on his face. The evolution had brought out a new energy in him, and Kenji could feel the connection between them had deepened.

Kenji pulled out his Pokédex and scanned Gengar, eager to check out his new stats. His eyes widened as the screen displayed Gengar’s current level—Level 35.

"Unbelievable," Kenji whispered. "You’ve gotten so much stronger, buddy."

Gengar chuckled, his red eyes glowing with excitement. Kenji couldn’t help but smile, feeling an overwhelming sense of pride in his Pokémon. He knew that Gengar was going to be a key player in the upcoming battles.

Kenji began to think strategically about Gengar’s moves. "Alright, let’s see," he said, his fingers hovering over the screen of the Pokédex. "Shadow Ball is a must. Your Hypnosis has always been clutch, so we’ll keep that. Sucker Punch is perfect for catching opponents off guard."

He paused for a moment, then remembered the Thunderbolt TM he had received from Lt. Surge. "And I’ve got just the thing for the fourth move."

Kenji quickly taught Gengar Thunderbolt, replacing Will-o-wisp, that had served them well up until now. "There we go, Gengar. Now you’re even more versatile."

Gengar cackled with glee, electricity crackling around his ghostly form as he tested out his new move.

Axel grinned at the sight. "Gengar with Thunderbolt? That’s going to catch a lot of people off guard. You’re really setting up for something special, Kenji."

Kenji nodded, feeling the excitement build in his chest. "We’re ready for anything now. No matter who we face, we’ll find a way to win."

The battle in the arena was over. Viktor had won. Coalossal with his Steam Engine ability had defeated Greninja too, getting faster with each Water Shuriken. The crowd erupted in cheers.

The two friends settled back in their seats as they were waiting for the next battle to be announced. Kenji felt a surge of determination. With Gengar by his side and a strategy in place, he knew that they were prepared for whatever came next. The tournament was far from over, but Kenji was more confident than ever that they could go all the way.

As the next battle was announced, Kenji felt a mix of nerves and excitement. It was his turn to step into the arena, and the crowd’s cheers echoed through the stadium as he rose from his seat. Gengar floated beside him, giving a reassuring grin that settled the tension in Kenji’s chest.

"You got this," Axel said, giving Kenji a firm pat on the back. "Just keep your head in the game, and you’ll do fine."

Kenji nodded, his jaw set with determination. "Thanks, Axel. Time to see how far we can go."

The two friends exchanged a nod before Kenji made his way down to the battlefield. The massive arena loomed ahead, the noise of the crowd growing louder as he approached. On the other side, his opponent stepped forward—a young woman with a confident stride and a sharp gaze.

The announcer’s voice boomed through the speakers. "Our next match will be between Kenji from Celadon City and Elena from Sinnoh! Both trainers have shown incredible skill to get this far, and now it’s time to see who will advance to the next round!"

Kenji’s heart pounded as he took his position. He could see the determination in Elena’s eyes, a reflection of his own.

"Alright, Elena," Kenji called out across the battlefield. "Let’s give the crowd a show they won’t forget!"

Elena smirked, pulling a Pokéball from her belt. "You’re on, Kenji. Let’s see if you can keep up!"

Kenji grabbed his first Pokéball, his fingers tightening around it before he threw it into the air. "Pidgeotto, let’s go!"

With a flash of light, Pidgeotto burst into the sky, wings spread wide as he let out a fierce cry. The crowd roared in approval, but Kenji’s focus was entirely on Elena as she made her move.

"Staraptor, show them how it’s done!" Elena shouted, releasing her Pokémon. The powerful bird Pokémon emerged, its wings flapping with a thunderous force as it glared at the smaller Pidgeotto with sharp, determined eyes.

Kenji felt a chill run down his spine. Staraptor was clearly stronger, its intimidating presence enough to make even seasoned trainers second-guess their strategies.

The announcer’s voice echoed through the stadium. "Kenji’s Pidgeotto versus Elena’s Staraptor! Let the battle begin!"

Kenji wasted no time. "Pidgeotto, start with Wing Attack!"

Pidgeotto dove toward Staraptor, wings glowing with energy as it closed in for the attack. But Elena was quick to respond.

"Staraptor, counter with your own Wing Attack!"

The two Flying-types collided in midair, the force of their attacks sending shockwaves through the arena. Staraptor, however, proved to be the stronger of the two, and Pidgeotto was knocked back, struggling to regain his balance in the air.

Kenji clenched his fists. "Hang in there, Pidgeotto! Use Quick Attack!"

Pidgeotto shot forward with blinding speed, aiming to land a hit before Staraptor could react. But Elena was ready.

"Quick Attack to match!"

Once again, the two Pokémon clashed, but Staraptor’s sheer power was too much. Pidgeotto was sent spiraling downward, barely managing to recover before hitting the ground.

Kenji’s mind raced. He could see the difference in their levels, and Staraptor’s dominance was becoming more apparent with each passing second. But he couldn’t afford to back down now.

"Pidgeotto, Gust attack!"

Pidgeotto flapped its wings furiously, sending a powerful gust of wind toward Staraptor. The attack struck, but it wasn’t enough to faze the larger bird Pokémon.

Elena’s eyes gleamed with determination. "Let’s finish this, Staraptor! Close Combat!"

Staraptor soared toward Pidgeotto with blinding speed, its wings tucked in as it closed the distance. The force of the attack was devastating—Staraptor unleashed a flurry of strikes with its wings and talons, battering Pidgeotto relentlessly.

Kenji watched in horror as Pidgeotto was overwhelmed, unable to fight back against the onslaught. With a final, powerful strike, Staraptor sent Pidgeotto crashing to the ground, the impact reverberating through the arena.

"Pidgeotto!" Kenji shouted, his heart sinking as his Pokémon lay motionless on the battlefield.

The announcer’s voice cut through the tension. "Pidgeotto is unable to battle! The first round goes to Elena’s Staraptor!"

Kenji’s hands shook as he recalled Pidgeotto, the Pokéball trembling slightly in his grip. "You did your best, Pidgeotto. Rest for now."

Elena gave a respectful nod. "Your Pidgeotto put up a good fight, Kenji. But my Staraptor’s on another level."

Kenji met her gaze, determination flaring up within him once more. "You might be right, but this battle’s not over yet, Elena."

He reached for his next Pokéball, the weight of the battle pressing down on him, but also fueling his resolve. Pidgeotto had given it his all, and now it was up to the rest of Kenji’s team to turn the tide. The crowd roared in anticipation as the battle continued.

As Kenji prepared to send out his next Pokémon, Elena called out across the battlefield, her voice carrying an edge of amusement. "So, how many badges do you have, Kenji? Two? Maybe three?"

Kenji hesitated for a moment before responding, "I have three badges. I just got my latest one from Lt. Surge."

Elena's laugh was sharp and dismissive. "Really? Three badges?" She shook her head, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips. "I’m a Champion in Sinnoh, Kenji. My Pokémon are on another level. You’re out of your depth here."

Kenji’s jaw clenched, his heart pounding in his chest. "Maybe, but I’m not backing down."

Elena shrugged, her confidence unwavering. "Suit yourself. But I’m ending this right now." She glanced at her Staraptor, who was already battered from the previous battle with Pidgeotto. "I don’t even need to use another Pokémon."

Kenji knew the odds were stacked against him, but he wasn’t going to give up without a fight. He called out his next Pokémon, gripping the Pokéball tightly before releasing it. "Gengar, let’s go!"

With a flash of light, Gengar materialized on the battlefield, his wide grin and mischievous eyes reflecting his eagerness to battle. The crowd roared with excitement, sensing the intensity of the upcoming clash.

Elena chuckled softly. "A Gengar, huh? Impressive, but not enough. Staraptor, let’s finish this!"

Kenji didn’t hesitate. "Gengar, use Thunderbolt!"

Gengar’s eyes gleamed with electricity as he summoned a powerful bolt of lightning, aiming directly at Staraptor. The attack struck true, sending a surge of electricity coursing through Staraptor’s body. The bird Pokémon let out a cry of pain as it was hit, its wings faltering as it struggled to stay airborne.

Elena’s expression finally shifted to one of mild concern. "Staraptor, hang in there! Use Wing Attack!"

But Gengar wasn’t done. As Staraptor made contact with Wing Attack Kenji saw the opening and seized it. "Gengar, another Thunderbolt!"

The second Thunderbolt struck with even greater force, and Staraptor, already weakened from its previous battle, couldn’t withstand the attack. With a final cry, it plummeted to the ground, fainting on impact.

The crowd erupted into cheers as the announcer’s voice echoed through the arena. "Staraptor is unable to battle! Kenji evens the score with his amazing Gengar!"

Kenji felt a surge of relief, but it was short-lived as Elena’s smirk returned. "Not bad, Kenji. But you’re still not winning this." She called back Staraptor and pulled out another Pokéball. "The level of the trainers in this competition is a joke. I’m not gonna use my precious Garchomp until the final. Let’s show him what real power looks like, Empoleon!"

With a flash, the massive Emperor Pokémon emerged onto the battlefield, its steely gaze locking onto Gengar. Kenji’s stomach dropped. He’d never faced an Empoleon before, and he could sense the overwhelming power radiating from it.

Elena didn’t waste any time. "Empoleon, Aqua Jet!"

Empoleon moved with blinding speed, a torrent of water surrounding it as it shot forward like a bullet. Before Gengar could react, Empoleon slammed into him with the force of a freight train. Gengar was knocked off his feet, sent crashing into the ground, struggling to get back up.

Kenji's heart raced. "Gengar, you can do it! Get up!"

But Gengar, despite his best efforts, was too weakened by the impact. He tried to rise, but his body gave out, and with a final, strained breath, he collapsed.

"Gengar is unable to battle! The victory goes to Elena and her Empoleon!" The announcer declared, the crowd roaring in approval.

Kenji stood there, stunned, the reality of his first defeat sinking in. Elena returned Empoleon to its Pokéball, then walked over to Kenji, her expression no longer mocking but carrying a hint of respect.

"You’ve got potential, Kenji," Elena said, offering a small smile. "But you’ve got a long way to go if you want to stand with the best. Remember this loss—it’ll make you stronger."

Kenji nodded numbly, the weight of her words pressing down on him. He recalled Gengar, his heart heavy as he began the walk back to the Pokémon Center. The cheers of the crowd felt distant, like a reminder of the gap between him and the elite trainers he aspired to join.

As he trudged through the streets, he couldn’t shake the feeling of failure. His Pokémon had given it their all, but it hadn’t been enough. He was so lost in thought that he almost didn’t notice Axel waiting for him outside the Pokémon Center.

"Kenji!" Axel called out, jogging over with a concerned look on his face. "I saw the battle… tough break, man."

Kenji sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah… I guess I wasn’t ready. Elena’s on another level."

Axel clapped a hand on Kenji’s shoulder, giving him a reassuring smile. "Don’t let it get you down. We all face defeat at some point. The important thing is how you bounce back. You’ve got a strong team, and you’re a great trainer. You’ll get stronger, and when the time comes, you’ll get another shot at a Tera Orb."

Kenji managed a small smile, appreciating Axel’s words. "Thanks, Axel. I just… didn’t expect to lose like that. I looked like an idiot."

"Hey, it happens to the best of us. You’ll get your chance."

Kenji nodded, feeling a glimmer of hope return. "Yeah… you’re right. We’ll keep going. Gengar, Pidgeotto, and the others—they deserve my best."

As they headed inside the Pokémon Center, Kenji couldn’t help but feel a renewed sense of determination. He might have lost this battle, but it was just one step in his journey. With Axel’s support and the bond he shared with his Pokémon, he knew he’d come back stronger. And next time, he wouldn’t let anything stand in his way.

Kenji and Axel returned to the Stadium after some rest, both feeling the weight of the battles they had already faced. Kenji, with Gengar floating silently beside him, was still processing his earlier defeat, but Axel’s energy was contagious. The air inside the arena buzzed with excitement as the next round was about to begin.

"It seems like Taro from Hoenn and his Blaziken won the third battle. Alright, Kenji," Axel said with a grin, cracking his knuckles. "It's my turn now. Watch closely, 'cause this one’s gonna be wild."

Kenji smiled, the tension in his chest easing a little. "I’ll be cheering for you from the stands. Show them what you’ve got, Axel."

As they made their way to the VIP seats, Kenji could feel the anticipation in the air. The crowd was buzzing, eyes glued to the battlefield below. Gengar hovered near Kenji, his familiar, wide grin giving Kenji a small sense of comfort. The lights brightened on the battlefield as the announcer's voice boomed over the speakers.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are ready for the next match! In one corner, hailing from Paldea, we have Axel, and in the other, from Johto, we have Ryota! Let’s see what these trainers have in store for us!"

Axel stepped onto the battlefield, his confident smirk never wavering. Across from him stood Ryota, a calm and focused trainer with sharp eyes. His first Pokéball glinted under the bright lights of the arena.

Ryota spoke first, his voice steady. "I hear you’ve been making progress, Axel. But Scizor and I? We’re about to shut that down."

Axel laughed, unshaken. "You haven’t seen what Mabosstiff can do yet. Let’s get this started!"

The referee raised his flags, and the crowd went silent. "Trainers, release your Pokémon!"

With a flash of light, Ryota's Scizor appeared on the battlefield, its steel claws gleaming menacingly. Axel responded by releasing Mabosstiff, who growled deeply, the massive dog-like Pokémon’s muscular frame radiating raw power.

Kenji leaned forward in his seat, Gengar floating by his side, both of them eager to see how this battle would unfold.

Ryota was the first to act. "Scizor, Bullet Punch!"

Scizor’s speed was terrifying. In an instant, the Steel-type zipped across the battlefield, its claw gleaming as it closed in on Mabosstiff. The punch connected with a metallic thud, pushing Mabosstiff back a few steps, but the Dark-type shook it off, its eyes glowing with determination.

Axel’s eyes flashed. "That’s nothing! Mabosstiff, Thunder Fang!"

Mabosstiff leapt forward with lightning speed, its jaws crackling with electricity. With a deep, guttural growl, it sank its fangs into Scizor’s metallic body, sending a surge of electricity through the Bug and Steel-type. Scizor winced, its body sparking as the electric attack took its toll.

The crowd roared as the two Pokémon locked into a fierce exchange. Kenji clenched his fists, his heart racing as he watched the battle intensify.

Ryota remained calm. "Scizor, shake it off! X-Scissor, now!"

Scizor managed to break free of Mabosstiff’s fangs, spinning around with razor-sharp precision. Its claws glowed a bright green as it slashed across Mabosstiff’s side, leaving a jagged cut that caused the Dark-type to stagger back.

Kenji winced, feeling the tension in the air. "Come on, Mabosstiff, you’ve got this!" he muttered under his breath.

Axel, however, was unfazed. His eyes gleamed with determination. "Let’s turn this around, buddy. Crunch, now!"

Mabosstiff’s eyes narrowed, and it charged forward with renewed vigor. Its jaws opened wide, glowing dark as it clamped down hard on Scizor’s shoulder. The Dark-type energy flowed through Scizor, making the Steel-type let out a metallic screech of pain as it struggled to free itself from the crushing bite.

Ryota’s confidence wavered slightly. "Scizor, get some distance! Use Air Slash!"

Scizor flapped its wings, creating a sharp gust of air that sliced toward Mabosstiff, forcing it to release its grip. The attack cut deep into Mabosstiff, leaving visible slashes on its tough hide, but the fierce canine refused to back down.

Axel grinned. "Now, Snarl!"

Mabosstiff unleashed a deep, echoing snarl that rippled across the battlefield, the dark energy from the move striking Scizor and lowering its special attack power. Scizor staggered, its movements slowing as the dark energy enveloped it.

Kenji leaned forward, heart racing. "He’s got this."

Ryota grit his teeth. "We’re not done yet! Quick Attack!"

Scizor, despite its weakened state, shot forward in a blur of speed, slamming into Mabosstiff. But Axel wasn’t finished.

"Mabosstiff, Headbutt, let’s end this!"

With a fierce roar, Mabosstiff charged at Scizor, its head glowing with energy as it collided with the weakened Bug and Steel-type. The impact was immense, sending Scizor skidding across the battlefield before it collapsed, unable to rise.

The crowd erupted in cheers as the referee raised his hand. "Scizor is unable to battle! Mabosstiff wins the round!"

Kenji couldn’t help but grin as he clapped along with the crowd. "That was intense," he said, looking at Gengar, who nodded enthusiastically.

Axel called Mabosstiff back, giving a thumbs-up to Kenji in the stands. "One down, one to go," he said with a grin.

Ryota, however, wasn’t done yet. With a determined look, he pulled out his next Pokéball. "You won’t win this so easily. Go, Crobat!"

The large, bat-like Pokémon appeared, its sharp eyes scanning the battlefield. Axel’s expression grew serious. He knew Crobat’s Poison-type moves could be dangerous.

"This is gonna be tricky," Kenji muttered to himself.

Axel, unfazed, threw out his next Pokéball. "Let’s finish this, Fearow!"

Fearow emerged, letting out a loud, piercing cry as it spread its wings wide, ready for battle.

"Crobat, Confuse Ray!" Ryota ordered.

Crobat’s eyes glowed, sending a wave of strange energy toward Fearow. But Axel was ready.

"Pursuit, now!"

Before Crobat’s Confuse Ray could take effect, Fearow shot forward like a blur, darting through the air and slamming into Crobat with a devastating hit. Crobat staggered back, dazed from the impact.

"Stay on it, Aerial Ace!" Axel commanded.

Fearow swooped down with blinding speed, slashing into Crobat with precision. The bat Pokémon tried to fight back, flapping its wings desperately, but Fearow was too fast, dodging every attempt.

"Crobat, Air Cutter!" Ryota called out, trying to turn the tide.

Crobat sent sharp blades of air toward Fearow, but Axel’s Fearow was in full control now.

"Finish this with a Fury Attack!" Axel shouted.

Fearow launched a barrage of beak strikes, each one hitting Crobat with incredible force. The barrage overwhelmed the already weakened Crobat, and with one final strike, Crobat collapsed to the ground.

"Crobat is unable to battle! Axel wins the match!" the announcer declared.

The crowd erupted into cheers once more. Kenji stood up, clapping loudly. "That was incredible, Axel! You dominated that fight!"

Axel grinned as he called Fearow back, walking toward the stands. "Told you, man. I’ve got this."

Kenji smiled, feeling the excitement of the battles surge through him. As Axel joined him, he couldn’t help but feel that they were both destined for greatness.

The air inside the stadium crackled with excitement as the announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers, signaling the end of another intense battle. The crowd was buzzing, and Kenji could feel the energy surging through the arena. Then, the moment they had been waiting for arrived.

“Ladies and gentlemen! After a day of fierce competition, we have our four finalists!” The announcer’s voice carried over the roaring crowd. “Please give it up for Axel from Paldea, Elena from Sinnoh, Viktor from Galar, and Taro from Hoenn!”

The arena exploded in cheers as the finalists were displayed on the screen, their faces lit up for all to see. Kenji, sitting in the stands with Gengar floating by his side, cheered loudly for Axel.

Axel made his way over to Kenji, wiping sweat from his brow but grinning ear to ear. "Made it to the final four!" he said, clapping Kenji on the back as he sat down beside him.

Kenji nodded, impressed. "You were amazing out there, man. You and Mabosstiff handled that Scizor like pros."

Axel laughed. "Thanks, but it’s only going to get even tougher from here. Elena and Viktor... they’re no joke."

Kenji sighed, leaning back in his seat. "Yeah... I felt that firsthand with Elena. She’s on another level."

Axel gave him a reassuring look. "You’ve come a long way too, Kenji. Don’t forget that. Besides, there’s always more battles ahead."

Kenji smiled, feeling a little better. "True. Speaking of which, let’s head to the Pokémon Center so you can heal up before the finals."

Axel agreed, and they both got up, making their way out of the stadium, Gengar hovering playfully beside them.

As they walked through the streets toward the Pokémon Center, Kenji glanced over at Axel, a question that had been lingering in his mind resurfacing. "Hey, Axel… something I haven’t asked—how many badges do you have?"

Axel grinned. "Seven."

Kenji nearly tripped over his own feet, staring at Axel in disbelief. "Seven?! One more, and you can apply for the League!"

Axel nodded, his expression turning serious for a moment. "Yeah, just one more. The last one I need in Paldea."

Kenji’s eyes widened. "Paldea? You’re going to Paldea to get your final badge?"

Axel nodded again, then turned to Kenji with a grin. "Actually, I was going to ask you… would you want to travel with me to Paldea once you've gotten your seventh Gym badge too? I figured we could take on the rest of the journey together."

Kenji was taken aback but excited. The idea of traveling to a completely different region, especially one like Paldea, was something he hadn’t even considered. "You know what? Yeah, I’d love that! But first, I’ve got to get my next badges here. Vermillion was tough, but I’m ready for what comes next."

"That’s what I’m talking about," Axel said with a grin. "And by the way, I don’t have any other Pokémon besides the three you’ve seen. Mabosstiff’s my starter, and Marowak and Fearow have been with me almost since I began my journey. Haven’t caught any others."

Kenji blinked, surprised. "Wait, so you’ve made it this far with just those three?"

Axel nodded. "Yup. I’ve been focused on training them to be the best they can be. But, as soon as I get back to Paldea—or even here in Kanto—I’m definitely going to catch three more to round out my team."

Kenji grinned. "That’s amazing, Axel! I’m kind of the same way, to be honest. I’m picky about my team too. But man, you’ve really inspired me. I need to train even harder to catch up to you."

"You’re doing great," Axel said, clapping Kenji on the shoulder. "We’ll push each other to get stronger. It’s what rivals are for, right?"

"Right," Kenji agreed, feeling a surge of determination.

They arrived at the Pokémon Center and walked up to the counter, handing Axel’s Pokéballs to Nurse Joy. As they waited for Axel’s Pokémon to heal, they grabbed a couple of iced coffees and sat down at one of the tables.

Kenji took a sip of his drink, the coolness refreshing after the long day. "It’s kind of crazy how far we’ve come since we first met."

Axel leaned back, his coffee in hand. "Yeah, it’s been a wild ride. But the journey’s far from over, Kenji. Kanto is vast and Paldea’s gonna be something else."

Kenji nodded, excitement bubbling in his chest. "I’m ready for it."

As they sat there, enjoying the brief moment of calm before the finals, Kenji couldn’t help but think about how much he had grown as a trainer. Gengar floated beside him, ever-present and always watching, a reminder of the bond he had with his team. He had a long way to go, but with his Pokémon and friends like Axel by his side, he knew he was ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.
