New York, United States.
What was supposed to be a normal night for the Knights, one of the richest families in the US and the world, turned into a festive, but also accelerated one, as Angelina, Mr. Knight’s wife’s water broke. Her child was going to be born soon, ready to become one of the richest kids alive, born with a diamond spoon in his mouth, or at least, that’s what’s expected.
Not wasting any time, Roger Knight, his wife Angelina, and their butler Frank rushed towards the nearest hospital with the help of their driver, a young ex-military woman called Jannette. The drive was extenuating, to say the least, with the poor Angelina's breathing getting harsher and harsher.
Thankfully for her, Jannette’s driving skills were top-notch even inside the chaotic city of New York; one of the many reasons she was hired in the first place. Soon, they were admitted into one of the most prestigious hospitals in the city, the Presbyterian, where Angelina started to give birth to their first child. The Knights were, after all, a young couple, slightly over their 30’s.
After a few intense hours of labor, Angelina finally manages to give birth to what looked to be a healthy young man. Or so wished to say the nurse, but in reality, the baby looked sick, no matter how many times you looked at him, so they did what they had to and gave immediate attention to the newborn, causing Angelina to cry worriedly at the life of her baby, even if she herself wasn’t in a really good condition.
While the attending professionals were trying to stabilize the new mom, another group of nurses and doctors tried their hardest to stabilize the chubby baby. But there was a problem. As intelligent and wise as the professionals working there were, no one managed to find the actual reason for the baby’s sickness. Which only meant something. It was a newly discovered illness that was affecting the child.
For the relief of every member of the Knight family, servants included, the baby managed to push through the emergency and kept his life. Not before the doctors told Mr. Knight that while they managed to stabilize the kid, the illness, whatever it was, still persisted, and they had to keep him under rigorous observation. Both parents couldn’t do anything more than cry and accept the doctors' order to keep the newborn in the hospital. Even though it wasn’t a really great moment, both Roger and Angelina decided to name the small child, giving him the name Dylan, a ray of hope.
And so, started the life of Dylan, the most fortunate, and at the same time, the unluckiest man on Earth. It was a miracle that he managed to survive after being born.
As he grew up, misfortune always accompanied him. His parents died in a car accident as soon as he reached 10 years old, leaving him under the care of Jannette and Frank. At 18th years old, Frank was killed while some robber tried to steal his wallet, while Jannette died a few months after Frank when a bomb exploded inside the bank she was retiring some funds for their day-to-day life.
If that wasn’t enough, not even a single day passed without his illness affecting him. Being able to walk was a miracle that only happened after three years of hard therapy, don’t mention doing any soft exercise, on Dylan’s own words, it was a miracle and proof of his hard effort on how he didn’t fall while walking from his room to the bathroom.
His life was spent at home, no matter if it was education or recreation, everything had to be done at home. A really luxurious one, yes, but nothing short of prison for him, even more, when his body was his own personal prison already. Even then, he always tried his best to have a positive look on life, and that managed him to get success in his business management. Or so he wanted to say, but no matter what he tried, everything always turned out the wrong way.
Investing in Real State? Too bad, a tornado, a terrorist attack, or an earthquake out of nowhere was enough to break any investment he tried, even when the properties around are left intact. Revolutionary products? Nothing short of failure, scam, or theft waited for him. Expanding the family company? Bankruptcy and fraud investigations were the best results he could get. No matter what he tried, something always happened. And what’s worse, it wasn’t even because of his lack of ability. The most ridiculous and improbable things always happened to him.

Thankfully for him, his grandparents came from a long line of business emperors. So even after all his failures, money wasn’t a problem a tall. Until…
“What?” Dylan asked dumbfounded
“I’m sorry kid…” The detective that stood in front of him said with an apologetic face. “Orders from the court… We can’t do anything…”
“But it has to be a mistake!” Dylan shouted. “It’s impossible… Frank wouldn’t do anything like that!”
“Look, I know, the man, hopes he rest in peace, was a really trustworthy old man. But… Even if he wasn’t the one to do it, someone did hack into the Federal Reserve, stole the exact amount of money your family had in their bank, deposited it into your family’s accounts, and then used an unknown method to transfer said amount towards an undetected account somewhere in the world…”
“You got to be kidding me! How could someone even hack into the Federal Reserves!? Heck, how can someone ‘transfer’ money from the Federal Reserves? Is that even possible!?”
“I honestly don’t know, kid. I’m just here to give you the news…” The detective said apologetically, as all around them a group of public workers took everything from the penthouse. “We’re still investigating things, it was one of the most ridiculous thefts in the world, almost no one can believe it happened.”
“But why do they even need to freeze my family’s accounts? It doesn’t make sense! I’m a victim here too!”
“Nothing can be done there… Unless the criminal appears and the case is finally closed, your family’s stuff will be kept under tight security… Even from you.”
“Fuck!” Dylan shouted, before sighing and laying back on the couch. “So, now what?”
“Look… It’s not like you’ll be left with nothing…” The detective said. “I understand that it might be difficult with how accustomed you’re to your normal life, but a hundred thousand dollars is still a lot of money, you can start a business easily.”
“...” At this point, Dylan wanted to cry from the detective’s words. Millions of dollars burned weren’t enough for him to start a business, he won’t even bother to try again with just a hundred thousand dollars. {Even a million would be a waste…} Dylan lamented as he rested his head on the couch.
“Um…” One of the public workers called to him. “I’m sorry… But we need to take this couch… It’s the only thing left…”
“...” Dylan looked at him with lost eyes, a tear slowly showing on the corner of his eyes. With a deep sigh and great effort, he slowly stood up from the couch. His legs slightly trembling. “So…” He turned to the detective as the workers took the couch out of the penthouse. “When do I have to leave this place…”
The detective scratched the back of his head before letting out a deep sigh. “I’ll be waiting for you in front of the building’s entrance. Take your time, but try to keep it under the next thirty minutes.”
Dylan could only sigh, as he nodded toward the detective. Taking his cue, the detective turned around and made his way back to his car, giving some time alone to the kid to come to terms with what was happening.
“Now what am I supposed to do? Father? Mother?” Dylan said with a sad tone as he looked at the eerily empty apartment, walking close to one of the tall and wide windows of the apartment.
He, better than anyone else, knew that he was fucked. No matter how others said he was born with a diamond spoon, his life hasn’t been the golden promise everybody thought. Not even his health could be said to be ‘good’.
“Ha… Not even one of my businesses turned into a success to keep me standing… And with my medical expenses, the money I have left will turn to dust in a couple of months…” He muttered to himself as he looked down to the street through one of the windows of the penthouse. Lost in his past, Dylan failed to notice the plane that was rushing toward him; after all, it wasn’t that big, and its white color camouflaged perfectly on this particularly cloudy day. “Huh?” The moment he finally noticed it, it was already too late. Not like he could run out of its way, though. “HUH!?” A surprised, dumbfounded, and slightly resigned shout, was all that he could say before the plane crashed right through the window he was looking through.
Dylan Knight, the most fortunate and unluckiest man, died. Unknown to him at the time, a pilotless aircraft had a small failure during a training session, causing it to plane towards his penthouse. No one else but him died because of that accident.
