Prologue

Kim Dongsoo leaned back into his chair, finger rubbing at his tired eyes as he let out a groan. A 28-year old working salaryman working in a 9 to 5 job for a heartless corporation, ever since he had graduated from university with his Bachelors in Engineering, he had spent countless long nights working overtime in a job unrelated to his degree.

Just as he submitted the report that his manager had been pestering him for over the last 3 days, he heaved a sigh of relief. He glanced out of the broad windows, observing the disappearing rays of sunlight through the metal skeleton of a building under construction opposite to his office.

Quickly shutting down his workstation and packing his bags, he rushed out of his office building, striding towards the rail station, mind occupied with thoughts of a hot shower and rest after a long day of work and desperately trying to please his manager for the upcoming performance evaluation.

As he crossed the street, he pulled his smartphone out of his pants pocket, tapping rapidly on the screen as he continued to follow the sidewalk.

Ping! With a crisp sound, his phone alerted him to a message from his manager, telling him how the report he submitted was not up to par. Sighing dejectedly at the thought of the upcoming late nights he would be spending to refine the report, he heard a second  Ping! sound.

Realising that his phone had not received any alerts, he glanced around in confusion, just to hear a shout from above his head. His gaze snapped upwards, pupils dilating in horror as he noticed an object hurtling towards him at tremendous speed.

His eyes had just enough time to register that the object dropping onto him was, in fact, a glass pane, and the figure of a construction site worker sticking out of a 7th story window, frantically yelling at him to escape , before his world went red.

Through a veil of fog, his felt and saw the glass pane shatter, splintering as it crashed down onto his head. He saw his body crumple and hit the pavement, felt as something within his head shattered and blood, accompanied with shards of bone poured out of the side of his head.

Screaming at himself to move, he attempted to get up from the ground, but all he managed to do was roll his body to face the sky. As he watched the blood flowing from his broken head flow into his eyes and taint the sky red, his fading consciousness only managed to form one coherent line of thought.

“I… don't want to die”

As his eyes closed, he saw people crowding around his, their voices barely audible. Then all he saw was black, as his consciousness faded into oblivion and his life flowed out of his broken body.
