Taking a deep sigh of relief and sitting down, I thought about how I finally finished plowing the entire ground. It was once again time for me to begin planting the vegetables for the king and his family. I hated that man for always taking my food and leaving nothing for me and my family while feeding himself every year.
My name is Sani, and I'm a rice farmer. I have a wife and a son. Things have been rough lately with the constant wars going around the kingdom and the king's guards constantly coming to take all my food every year. This wouldn't have been a problem if selling my vegetables wasn't the only way I made money. I have found other ways that have helped, but even those have been disappearing lately.
"Come on, haven't you taken enough from me already? Go bother some other damn farmer for once, will you?" I said to the soldier that stood in front of me, grabbing a nearby pitchfork and swinging at them, I couldn't stand this treatment of me and my family any longer. Something needed to change
"Peasant! You dare resist the orders of the king; you'll suffer the consequences!" One guard shouted as the others held me back. I could only watch as they began taking the barrels of extra food I had saved from what they had left behind.
Watching this whole thing has left me with a feeling of despair inside of me. My entire year's worth of food savings had just vanished in front of my eyes.
"You've taken enough from me! Just leave me, my farm, and my family alone!" Filled with rage, I broke free from the grip of the other two guards, grabbed my pitchfork, and tried stabbing it through the one who was carrying my crops away, only to be shoved to the ground by the same two knights I had just fought off.
"That's enough! You and your whole family are under arrest, and the king will decide what to do with you." One of the guards said that as they walked inside my house, I could hear the panicked voices of my wife and son as they were dragged out of the house and tossed into the back of a carriage.
I was soon tossed into another carriage and taken to the castle where the King was. I was forced out of the carriage and put into cuffs as I was brought face-to-face with the King himself.
"Oh Sani, what am I going to do with you this time? This is the fifth time you've decided to attack my guards. I've given you so many chances, haven't I?" The king spoke in a dissatisfied tone.
"You can take my rice, my crops, my farm, and anything else you want, but I will not allow you to do any harm to my family, you damn tyrant!" I shouted. Blind with rage, I stood up and charged at the King.
I don't know what had come over me at that moment, but as soon as I got close to the king, a sharp stabbing pain went through my chest. Looking down and falling to my knees, I noticed an arrow had gone right through me.
"Such a shame. That's a pathetic way to die, Sani. I was planning to keep your family and let you go home too. Oh well. I hope you have fun wherever you go. Just kidding, I really don't care." The King said as they walked up to me.
"I promise you one thing: I will come back, and when I do, I will make you go through all the suffering you made me and my family go through, and you will learn that you decided to pick on the wrong farmer." I looked up at him, but the last thing I noticed was him getting ready to kick my face before everything suddenly turned a white color. Surprisingly, I felt no pain at all. I felt a strange calm, as if I was at peace.
"Gah... What the hell, where am I?" I opened my eyes and looked around the space. I felt a bit smaller, though I couldn't see my hands or my legs.
I noticed a figure dressed in black some distance away. I tried to walk over to them, only to find myself falling flat on the ground at that moment. I finally realized the long black beak coming from my face and the feathers I had dropped, sending a feeling of fear throughout me.
"WAHHHHHH! WHAT HAPPENED TO ME? WHAT AM I?!" Flailing around in an attempt to see what I had become, only to notice and see the figure now standing right above me.
"Stats." The figure said.
I felt intimidated by him. His tall build, strange blindfold, and glowing crown sent a shiver down my spine.
"Stats, say it!" The figure tapped their blade on the ground, sending me onto my back
"Okay, okay, stats!"
As if somebody heard me, a strange list would appear in front of my eyes

The figure looked up and rubbed their chin as a smile grew across their face. In a deep voice, they spoke up again "Now tell me your name, Raven."
"M-My name is Sani, and I'm a farmer. I don't know what this is or what's happening, but I need to get back home, please!"
"Sani...interesting name. I am Soul Lord Yoldomith. Though, Yoldomith is my last name, I believe I'll share it with you. I was the one who brought you here, so you should be thankful."
Yoldomith picked me up and brought me closer to him
"Sani Yoldomith, tell me what your goals are. What do you wish to accomplish?"
"Yoldomith, sir, I want to..."
"YOU SHALL ADDRESS ME BY LORD, LORD YOLDOMITH!"
The room was filled by a green inferno as Yoldomith's words echoed around me. I was filled with a sense of dread and immediately apologized to him.
"R-R-Right, Lord Yoldomith, my goal is to find my family, and once I do that, I wish to build my own nation where the citizens will not live in fear, a nation where the civilians will not be ruled by a tyrant. I wish to give everyone a place they can live in peace and be happy; that is my desire."
Yoldomith rubbed his chin again and smiled at me. "Oh, don't worry, Raven; I can guarantee you'll run into your family soon."
"Really?! Does that mean that they followed me here? Could you tell me exactly where they are? If they're okay, I have to know!"
He only shook his head. Yoldomith seemed a bit annoyed by my question.
"Raven, I believe the time has come for you to enter the world. I'll do my best to answer to any questions you may have. I shall be keeping a close eye on your journey to make sure you're safe."
"Wait! Tell me what stats are! What's a primordial skill? Who is Yggdrasil? What are evolutions? I still have questions!" I tried to grab the attention of Yoldomith only to have him ignore me.
"Do not be afraid; once there, knowing how to protect yourself will feel natural, exactly as it did for the rest of us."
"Rest of us?! Are you telling me there are more people?"
Watching as his hands began to glow a bright green. My vision went black once more before suddenly waking up on a tree in the middle of a forest. I looked down the branch I was sitting on to notice a group of wolves below me. It was an odd feeling, but it was as if I knew what to do, as if I'd gone through this before.
"This is strange. I don't know a single thing about this world, but I feel as if I know how to defend myself already. Is this what he meant?"
Slowly raising my wing, I began swinging as a large number of black feathers shot out and pierced the group of wolves. They tried to climb the large tree as they got more aggressive, but I kept shooting the volley of feathers. It took a long time, but eventually I noticed they had fallen to the poison, making me gain my first two levels.
"I see now I have to fight in order to get stronger. I'm really not one to kill people, but I suppose here it must be survival of the fittest, right? at least they're only animals and not humans."
I hesitated for a bit, but I decided to jump out of the tree, expecting to feel myself hit the ground, but that never came. Instead, I felt myself suddenly begin gliding as if somebody had taken control of my body and decided to begin flying
"I told you, Raven. I would be keeping an eye on you as long as you have my blessing. I will not let you die out here. I always keep my promises."
"Thank you, Lord Yoldomith. But where do I go to get a bit stronger? Are there more ways?
I didn't get a response from Lord Yoldomith for a long time until he decided to speak up again.
"Listen, Raven, I need you to let me control your body for some time. There is a spot in a kingdom named Chrysalis that has high-level monsters I could perhaps grind for you. I need to control you so that the odds of you dying become zero. Believe me."
"Okay, I trust you. But what happens if I get spotted? Will I die for good?" I began having a feeling of regret deep inside me, as if I was already making a horrible choice.
"Correct, you have the chance of gaining strength quicker, but you also have the chance of dying permanently. Even I will be unable to save you as the strength of Chrysalis' kingdom is superior to mine. They are the same people who... Yoldomith fell silent in the middle of speaking.
"Right, but would you mind me asking for more on this place called Chrysalis, Lord Yoldomith?"
These were the words I saw appear in front of me. I immediately understood what was happening and chose yes. It felt as if I was watching my own body from the outside as he took control and flew away.
[After what seemed like hours, we finally arrived at a new area with many dead trees, large spider webs, and what appeared to be a large number of run-down houses of what used to be a village.]
"I don't like it here." "It's as if this place is telling me to leave, or we should leave now."
"Do not be afraid; this is nothing but a spell their empress uses to keep enemies away. It is merely in your head."
"Lord Yoldomith, if you do not mind me asking, what will happen when I evolve? Do I get any new skills? Whatever those are."
"When you evolve, you'll be able to hold more skills and swap between your crow form and what you shall turn into next. You shouldn't worry about it for now, as that will not be happening for a while."
Lord Yoldomith landed behind a worn-down hut and appeared by my side, pointing in the direction of a group of large bees.
"What? You want me to attack those giant bees? They're twice my size; I can't do anything to them!"
"They are merely workers. Do not be frightened by them; they won't harm you. They'll drop fairly quickly as long as you poison them and drain their health."
Taking a deep breath and flying up to one of the bees, I noticed it ignored me as if I weren't there. I took this chance to toss feathers into many of the worker bees in the hive, looking back at Lord Yoldomith to see him signaling me to come back.
"Excellent! Now we must go before their queen finds out we're here. We'll return another time to gain additional levels. The poison will end up killing the bees. Believe me, you will be doing the world a huge favor by doing this."
"Right, I'll follow your lead, Lord Yoldomith."
Yoldomith grabbed me and floated away. I was surprised that he was able to fly too. I wanted to ask how, but stopped myself; it seemed as if the Soul Lord didn't like it when I asked him too many questions.
"We will be heading to the Snowlands; it is near Chrysalis, so you'll be able to get there easily. All you have to do is memorize its spot. I want you to gain more levels here; once you do that, I will talk to you again. You're on your own."
"I understand, thank you, Lord Yoldomith."
