Chapter 10 - Demon Sightings

Chapter 10 - Demon Sightings

With so many things at the forefront of my mind and realizing the difference in power. I followed along absentmindedly as the teachers had us back off from the battle.

Professor Chain was fighting against the demon by himself, one on one.

In the manga when two people fought there would be drawings of the chains and all that. But all I could see were flashes of what I assumed were chains moving about as the air crackled. The chains were breaking the sound barrier like whips, and chunks of the cow-like demon were splattering on the trees.

"How unlucky. I encountered a strong Exorcist," the cow demon stated. He seemed sad. It felt weird seeing its human face have such a… human-like expression.

But with one of its eyes missing, leaving only a gaping hole in which flesh wriggled. Gross.

"Exorcist battles are crazy," Bets hands were shaking. He likely had the same realization as me.

"Yes, and one day I will have to surpass that."

While professor Chain couldn't be considered weak by the normal person and exorcist standards. By my standards, he wasn't anything special. He would die just like he did in the original story if something doesn't happen that will change his fate.

The cow demon opened its human mouth and spewed out a dark glob. But professor Chain used his chains to slap the dark blob, and with the shockwave sent the thing back to the sender. It didn't have any effect on the cow demon, likely because if it was a poison he already had immunity to it.

But the dark blood still had hit its remaining eye and caused it to close for a split second. Which was enough for professor Chain to wrap the demon up in his chains. The demon whimpered but didn't have the chance to beg as its body was gripped by the chains so tight that it popped like a balloon.

Some of the demon's insides were rotten and the smell was nauseating.

"Bluegh!"

"Gross!"

Some of the students threw up. I tried to hold myself back from throwing up and was somewhat successful.

Professor Chain was the closest to the gross explosion and should be covered in rotten guts. But a cocoon of chains had stopped anything from landing on his body. The chain cocoon opened up and revealed an unharmed professor Chain.

He did the whole thing with ease. As if this was routine, and not the first time a situation like this had happened. "All of you who threw up will get a one hundred pushup penalty."

Jeez, this guy couldn't wait for something to punish his students for.

But I understood why he was harsh. He was trying to calm down the panicked students by having them concentrate more on the punishment and the pain. Instead of what had happened.

Despite his behavior. It would be revealed later that professor Chain was the teacher who would give everything up for his students. His future sacrifices and horrific death proved that beyond a reasonable doubt. So despite his shitty behavior, I try not to complain. Though even knowing the future and his true nature, he still was irritating sometimes.

As if in contrast to professor Chain, our Beast Master teacher, Rana, came forward with a bubbly smile on her face. A small frog jumps from between her breasts, and enlarges to be the size of a small carriage.

A couple of boys blush at the scene.

"Never thought I would be jealous of a frog," said one of them. Clenching his fist, as if swearing revenge on Rana’s familiar.

Her familiar approached the demon’s corpse. The frog wrapped its tongue around the demon chunks and swallowed them all.

Rana turned toward the students with a smile. “My tamed demon is called an inventory frog. It can store things inside its stomach which is like a separate space. Every demon part is essential, especially mid-class demons and above.”

The students looked at her in amazement. I wasn’t paying too much attention to her mini-lecture and instead concentrated my senses around me. I didn’t sense anything, but I realized that if something wanted to hide from me. It wouldn’t be difficult to do so.

“Every time you get injured, doctor Aki makes you drink strange-tasting potions. They’re potions made from some monster eye or something along those lines.” Rana explained with an innocent look.

“Ugh, I drank one of those once!”

“Ah damn! So I ate a demon eye! That’s fucking gross!”

The students started muttering amongst themselves. But their mutters stopped when professor Chain came forward, standing next to Rana. he smacked her above the head. “Don’t tell students things like that. What if one of them hesitates to drink a potion in a dire situation?”

“S -Sorry, professor!” She scratched the back of her head and had an embarrassed look on her face.

Why’s a teacher acting like a student?

“Act more professionally. You’re no longer my student!” Professor Chain delivers a karate chop above Rana’s head.

“Sorry, sorry!” She apologized with her hands clapped. Which was unprofessional, and instead of appeasing professor Chain, it pissed him off even more. Which made Rana apologize even more. Like a snowball rolling down a hill, emotions on both sides kept rising. “I just wanted to show my students the cool ability of my frog. You know how useless my ability is during fights. Its best use is just as a storage power. My familiar can’t even store living beings to seal them!”

Did… Did she just expose her ability’s weakness?

I wanted to facepalm. An exorcist explaining their own ability and weaknesses was like a boxer saying on TV where it hurts most when an opponent punches him.

Professor Chain sighed, rubbing his eyes as veins wriggled on his forehead. For the first time since meeting him, I could sympathize with the man.

“Going and telling everyone about your ability. Are you stupid? Now the students won’t have any confidence in you and rumors about you being weak will spread,” he kept karate chopping the young professor on the head and reprimanding her. It felt like for him, dealing with professor Rana was harder than fighting demons.

I wish I had some popcorn to watch the show. This wasn’t something I had ever seen in the manga. So it was new and entertaining in many ways.

From the corner of my eye, there was also a young girl helping Agon. Giving him a purple handkerchief. “This will help with the bad smell.”

“Thanks.”

“I really admire your perseverance,” the young girl smiled at him. She had a naive look on her face. But she didn’t seem to have any bad intentions. “If it had been me in your place, I would have already left school.”

She then caught on to how those words might sound in a bullying context and hurriedly added. “A -Also I don’t mean this in a bad way. I genuinely think you’re cool!”

Agon looked wide-eyed at her. She was the first one who had acknowledged his hard work. He even blushed a little and scratched the back of his neck. “I -It’s nothing.”

“You shouldn’t be ashamed of your talent or affinity. Just prove everyone wrong! Then no one would dare laugh at you!” The girl whispers some encouraging words and gives him a thumbs up.

Agon’s blush only intensified. He was like a kettle.

My enjoyment was cut short as professor Chain announced. “We will be going deeper into the forest to camp. Stay close to me or you will probably die. Just to clarify, if you die we’re leaving your bodies here.”

Well, that’s a way to motivate your students.

With each step we took into the Haunted Forest, my heartbeat increased. It felt like death was breathing down my neck. But I couldn’t let fear overwhelm my senses, or everything would go sideways.

I have to be fearless!
