Reincarnated as the side character
Chapter 2: What's my role?

Chapter 2: What's my role?

After taking the time to analyse my surroundings, I had noticed there was nothing too special about this new life of mine. It took a while for me to adjust to my new body, but luckily I had my eyes to see everything that caught my interest. I had been reincarnated into a new world set in around the medieval times, and that was pretty much it.

There was one thing I was sure of though. These were going to be the longest years of my life as a baby.

Being a baby was horrid. The constant scratchy diapers, non-stop peekaboo's from my parents and the disgusting mushy baby food that I was eating. Having been reincarnated, I assumed things would work like a generic isekai. Where was that spiritual voice in my head giving me cheat skills or the stat board that most main characters would have at this point? Maybe I was rushing things, I was still a baby, right?

Once I had begun walking, my mother took me to the market for the first time and I found that this world did in fact revolve around magic, something I was practically wishing for every night. My parents didn't show a single hint of magic to me at all throughout my days of being in a pushchair. We did go on walks in the park or something during that time but there was nothing distinct enough to show me magic did exist here.

"Look Virgil. Soon you'll be able to use magic like that. I'm sure you've inherited the strengths of your father." My mother smiled, looking at the man who was doing tricks with his water magic, showing off to the children who crowded around him in awe.

I kept quiet since I couldn't talk and we continued around the market. There were many stalls selling potions, weaponry, armour and other general things like foods, clothes, carpets and such. My mother and I went about for a while, her picking up things she needed to cook with and she even got me a small jumper. She was kind and I liked her a lot for how much of a good person she was. Eventually, we ended up going home after our little trip and my father was outside tending to his garden. He waved at us happily and opened the small gate to the house for us.

My father's name was Jaines, he was tall, muscular and really hairy, but he was just as kind and gentle as my mother.

"Carmen. How was you guys' day?" He asked his wife.

"It was fun. Virgil seemed happy seeing magic for the first time. Isn't that right?" She looked down at me and ruffled my silver hair.

Our life was nice, cosy and comfortable but something kept itching at the back of mind, telling me I was here for more than just relaxing in this small village.

A few more years of being a toddler and living my pure childhood life continued. Nothing special at all happened and the only fun I had was reading up on history books and magic books. Something I never thought I'd ever do, but without the comfort of my monitor, consoles or phone, I had nothing else to do. The writing on the pages looked like a muddle of random symbols but I could read it easily. Once I had arrived in this world, I must have automatically been able to understand the words. However, I still had help from both of my parents in being able to read some of the words on the page.

"Our son is such a quick learner." My father said proudly.

From what I learned from the books in our home, the world consisted of three continents all three however had some distance between them, so you had to travel by sea to reach either one. We lived on 'the human continent', Kairo, and the other two were called 'the wasteland', Hennet and 'the floating landmass' Florian. Both were a mix of all types of species consisting of Demi-humans, Fishmen, Dwarves and Elves. I wasn't too surprised in being in a world with both magic and different races, it was pretty generic to me.

Magic on the other hand was a little more complicated. In this world, Magic was hereditary meaning that only a select few of people could have it. The world was practically fifty-fifty with who had magic and who didn't. For me, it could go either way since my father Jaines had flame magic and my mother Carmen didn't have any magic at all. Magic could be identified within an individual once they reached a certain age in the childhood. I was already around five or six so there was no rush.

Before I could finish reading the chapter in 'An Introduction to Magic', my mother snatched the book away and carried me off to bed.

"Tomorrow, you start school, so you need a good night's rest." She said.

I groaned under my breathe as she walked out of the room. School. Something I didn't necessarily have fond memories of. In my old life I was bullied for being a fat ass and not a single girl would come near me. I prayed and hoped nothing similar would happen here.

The night went fast and I was up early, teeth chattering and legs quaking. Both my parents looked at each other, a little nervous for how I'd do in this first actual hurdle in this new life of mine.
