Chapter 2: Trouble in the Fox Village

Chapter 2: Trouble in the Fox Village

“I’m at the temple as usual, I also met wi-” Before Mae could finish her sentence, she could hear the sounds of bells ringing faintly. “Lady Kiyo, are we under attack again?”

“Yes, but don’t come back until I contact you again Mae! Do you hear me!?” the voice pleaded, knowing full well that Mae would rush back to help her village.

Mae clenched her teeth. But then she looked at Nox, who was staring at her. “I’m sorry to ask you this so suddenly Lord Nox, but…” she bowed down towards him. “I’d like you to help our village.”

Nox smiled. “I was wondering why you had a sudden change of emotion. We’ll head there right now.”

“Thank you, My Lord, I’ll forever be in- wai- Kyaa!”

“Spare the pleasantries for later,” Nox said as he picked her up and carried her bridal style. “Tell me where your village is.”

“Y-yes, it's in that direction,” she said, her face began to redden up.

“I wonder if I have wings,” Nox thought to himself. He tried to move his shoulders and he could feel something in there. A bat-like wing protruded out of his shoulders. The wings had a mix of black and dark red color and its span was as long as Nox himself. He then jumped and began to fly towards the direction Mae pointed. Although he had never flown before in his past life, it somehow already felt like second nature.

When they were flying towards Mae’s village, she told them how the humans had captured her kind, tying collars around their necks, restraining them both physically and magically. The humans sold them and sometimes used them as prostitutes to satisfy their desires, as their kind was regarded as highly beautiful by the humans.

Even with flying, it took a few minutes before they arrived at the village where it was under attack. Some of the village’s buildings were on fire. Nox landed in the middle of the village. She put her down safely and then scanned his surroundings. Humans were indeed the ones attacking the village.

But it wasn't bandits, instead, some wore robes and others wore plate armors. Their numbers weren't little too. Their attack was organized, mages would cast a spell that disables magic, then the warriors would close in to restrain the foxians while attaching the collars to their necks.

They were so busy with the foxians that they didn't notice Nox. He thought of a way to stop them and gather their attention. He suddenly had an idea and pointed his finger at the sky, calmly saying, "Thunder." His whole body crackled and flashes of lightning gathered near his hand. Then it shot out several bolts of lightning up into the air with a thunderous bang. The attackers saw this and stopped what they were doing. Some foxians saw this opportunity and fled in terror.

“Looks like there’s another demon here." One of the attackers spoke as he looked at Nox thoroughly. "I don’t think I’ve seen one quite like this before. Hey, we weren’t told there was another type of demon. Who the hell are you!?” he asked agitated.

“Just a demon passing by,” Nox quietly said, seeing that the foxians had fled.

"Then scram! We don't have business with you," he said, drawing his sword. "Interfere, and you'll pay the price." He grinned. The others also did the same, readying in a combat stance.

“Try me,” said Nox as he pointed two fingers at him. The stream of lightning that flew from his fingertips took on the form of a serpent and zapped the attacker so violently that his body was reduced to ashes. “How weak…” Nox mused as he looked down at the remains.

He had cast off his humanity. He's fully committed to following Qornaroth 's mission as he wants the chance to be reunited with Angelica again.

The other humans saw the remains of their comrade, and they backed up a step while raising their shields. The staff of the mages were glowing, indicating that they were about to start casting a spell.

“Mae, check on the others, I’ll handle things here,” Nox whispered to Mae who was still in awe at what had just happened. Mae snapped out of it and nodded. She ran towards a hut behind Nox.

A few humans tried to chase Mae, but Nox didn't let that happen. He waved his hands and pushed upwards, making all the people chasing her fly into multiple pieces as if they had been clawed. The ground was now stained with blood.

Glowing lights emanated from the mages' staffs, and Nox felt himself encased in a purple aura. This was the same magic they used for Foxians to cancel out their magic. But it didn’t stop there. A swirling cluster of light appeared above the mages, a mass of colors indicating each individual element. Fireballs, wind slashes, and water spears were sent toward Nox.

A huge cloud of dust blocked their vision as an explosion after explosions took place. They could make out a silhouette only for a second before the smoke cleared. It was Nox, unscathed. Only dust and dirt got to his naked body. The ethereal aura that enveloped him shattered into little pieces like glass.

“I have to say, those mages are a pain in the ass,” he said as he motioned his hands like crumpling a paper and turning it into a paper ball. The mages froze together before they were violently slammed against each other. Bones cracked as the bodies of the mages were deformed into something like a ball made out of their own body. Blood started to ooze out of the ball as it slowly turned red.

The remaining attackers looked in horror at the ball. Some had their minds broken and started to flee, but Nox wouldn't let them. He stomped the ground, making a wall made of soil emerge from below. It was big enough to stop them from going anywhere except towards Nox.

“Y-You! Hyaaaa!!” the attackers were so desperate that they started to attack Nox haphazardly, very different from earlier which was much more organized. Nox easily dodged their attacks, sometimes even stopping their swords with just two fingers. He didn't show mercy and killed them one by one. Some he killed instantly, while some were left to bleed out as their limbs got torn off.

In just a few minutes, the small army was turned into corpses.

“Y-you monster!” said one of them.

“Hmm?” Nox turned his head to the voice. “Aren’t you the ones who are monsters? Capturing these foxians and selling them for a profit?” Nox said as he pressed the human’s body with his feet.

“Ugh… hehe,” the human grunted but then smiled. “Even if you kill us all, we managed to load a caravan full of those bitches and they’re already heading back!”

“Is that so?” Nox yanked the human's arm so hard it came off. The man thrashed in pain.

“ARGH! O-our captain… will kill you!”

Nox leaned into his ear. “Then let your captain come, I’ll be waiting,” Nox said as he stabbed the human with the human's arm, embedding it halfway through the man's body. The human looked at his arm which was halfway through his body in complete terror as he slowly stopped breathing.

Nox looked around and saw the mess he made. That was the last of them.

Footsteps were heard coming towards him. It was Mae with other foxians.

They gasped as they witnessed the humans were all killed. Their bodies were soaked in blood and limbs scattered everywhere and there was a dark red ball made of corpses.

A foxian stepped forward. Her tails were moving around slowly. She had more tails than Mae. Nox counted them. Nine to be exact. Her fur was the color of a brimming gold except for the tips of her tail where they were white. She wore the same kind of robe as Mae, although its color was bright blue and it only covered up until her cleavage. Her elbow to her neck was exposed.

“I’ve heard from Mae about you,” she said as she looked at Nox’s seals, now stained with blood. “We’re grateful you saved us, but I’m afraid we couldn't save all of our kind. Some of them were loaded into a caravan and were already headed out.”

Nox looked at the deceased human who told him about it. “I know. Do you know where they went?” asked Nox as he took a sharp look at the foxian.

The foxian closed her eyes and moved her head several times before pointing toward a direction.

“Good.” Nox sprouted his wings and then took flight in the direction as fast as he could.

Shortly after, Nox spotted the caravan. Two humans were driving it. Nox swooped in and landed several meters in front of the caravan causing the horse to neigh and stop.

“W-who are you!?” said one of the drivers.

Nox didn't bother to answer, he moved in closer to the caravan. The driver who asked Nox's identity drew his sword and then attacked him. The other driver was shaking and stayed in the driver’s seat.

Nox deflected the attacks with only his arms before choking and lifting him up from the ground. The human dropped his sword as he grabbed Nox’s arm, trying to let go of his choke. As Nox tightened his grip to finish him off, he heard a voice in his head.

“Lord Nox, sorry for my rudeness, but would you not kill the two humans?”

Nox eased his grip as the human breath heavily. “Give me a good reason not to,” replied Nox inside his head.

“We could use them to get information about the ones behind the kidnapping. As you might have heard from Mae, this isn't the only time they did this kind of thing.”

“Fair point, but they'll run off knowing they can't hurt me.”

“Try searching the caravan, there should be some collars that were used to kidnap our people, I believe they work on humans too.”

Nox began searching the caravan while still choking the driver. He opened the back of the caravan to find there were bruised and beaten up foxians whose arms and legs were chained and whose necks had the magic canceling collar. He saw that some of the foxians were younger than Mae, young kids who got kidnapped too. Nox tightened his grip from seeing this, the driver started to cough up blood.

“Lord Nox, please! We’ll be at an advantage if you don’t kill them.” The voice inside his head snapped him back to reality.

Nox placed a spare collar on him and a purple aura consumed the human. Nox felt the driver was weakened since it no longer tried to let go of his grip. Nox dropped him to the ground as he grabbed another spare collar for the other driver who was still trembling in front of the caravan.

The other driver was much younger, his face resembled a teen and he wasn't as muscular as the other humans he killed. Nevertheless, Nox still placed a collar on him.

He let go of the horses before putting both the drivers in front of the caravan. Nox then lifted the caravan up and flew towards the direction he came.

Moments later, Nox arrived back at the village. He landed slowly, making sure the caravan wasn't damaged. Nox grabbed the two humans and threw them to the ground while the foxians unloaded the caravan.

“Fool, even if you brought them back, their collars can’t be broken without high-tier magic,” said the older driver.

“Thanks for saying that,” Nox said as he came close to the collared foxians. He tried to reach one of the foxian's collars but they took a few steps back, afraid that Nox would do something bad to them.

“Don’t worry, He’s the one who saved our village,” The nine-tailed fox lady reassured the others that Nox didn't have any bad intentions.

A foxian child who was collared braved herself and came towards Nox. Although she didn't say anything, Nox understood her intentions. An older foxian tried to pull the young child away from Nox but the child shrugged her away.

Nox kneeled and carefully touched the collar making sure he wasn't hurting the young child. Nox closes his eyes. “A high-tier magic to release this collar? I did resist this type of magic earlier, so maybe I could dispel it for others?” Nox thought to himself as he imagined the collar to break. He could feel mana gushing into the tip of his fingers. Sounds of a small crack came from the collar, then another crack, then another until her neck was free from the collar.

As Nox opened his eyes, he felt a soft warmth. The little girl hugged him tightly. He reached for her hands and legs, unshackling them too before lifting her up into his arms.

The others saw this and lined up waiting to be freed from the collars too.

When Nox was finished with the last foxians, he could barely stand. His mana was drained from releasing them from the collars. He gave the child to another foxian as she was sound asleep.

“Lord Nox…” the nine-tailed fox lady spoke. She then prostrated towards Nox, and all of the foxians followed her shortly after. “From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your assistance. Let us serve you from this point onwards.”

Nox was clearly taken aback by their behavior. Indeed, he caused chaos just as Qornaroth tasked him. But it seems the chaos he created was also appreciated by this foxian village. “I see now, you tasked me to create chaos, in the guise of taking revenge for the demons… As long as I can meet with her again, then…” he thought to himself as his vision started to blur. Nox fell on his knees, then collapsed.

“Lord Nox!” the nine-tailed lady rushed to the collapsed avatar.
