Chapter 3: Fleeing the Kingdom

After the verdict of the King, the baby, Yamihr von Ritzburg will be executed three days later. The child was later separated from his mother, the Queen.

The maids that saw and heard of the events yesterday were either silenced or put together with the baby in the same room to attend to its need.

"This is so atrocious! Inhuman! Ruthless! How can the King arbitrarily decide to kill his own son?! Unforgivable!"

"How can he be a king of the people if he can easily kill his own child?! Much less a commoner! If he wants to kill someone then no one can stop him!"

One of the maids has a furious look on her face. She slams the table as she vents her anger.

"Martha! Watch your words! If the King were to hear you, your head would be the next one rolling!"

Martha, one of the oldest maids in the Ritzburg castle. She is also one of the maids that saw and heard of what happened that day.

Unable to do anything for the child, they can only stare at him with pity as they distance themselves to avoid getting caught up in a dangerous situation.

However, Martha is different. She dares to criticize the King for his unjust doing although she does it in a quiet place where no one can hear her except for her best friend, Teresa, also one of the maids.

"Teresa, they say that a tiger, although cruel, will not devour its cub! However, look at the king! Fearing the unknown and blaming it on the child!"

Suddenly, Teresa's face became serious and looked straight at Martha.

"Indeed. This may cause a political conflict if the people, his subjects, were to hear the events that happened. Faction against the king would want to use this information to dethrone the current King. This will lead to rebellion and will one day become a civil war. There's also the possibility of the other countries waging war against our kingdom. That isn't good."

Martha went silent hearing the possibilities that will happen in the future.

"The only way to deal with the information leak is to silence the ones who saw the events, meaning… that the King would act to kill us, the Maids, and the Midwives. The ministers that day were his most loyal subordinates so it is fine for them, but…. "

Martha and Teresa looked at each other and saw the fear and worry in their eyes.

"What should we do?"

Martha went silent for a moment before looking at Teresa with a determined face.

"Teresa, I've decided. I would flee this Kingdom and take the Prince with me. How about you?"

Teresa looked straight in Martha's eyes with a stern glance, then a smile broke into her face.

"I'm sorry, Martha. I really wanted to go with you but, If I were to flee the Kingdom, then my son would be Implicated. I don't want that. That's why you should go by yourself. I will help you as much as I can."

"But...but… You'll die you know?..."

The rims of Martha's eyes became red as tears started to pour on her face. She hugged Teresa, not letting go. She had the feeling that If she were to let go, then her best friend would forever be gone. Then started bawling.

"That much, I'm prepared."

Teresa comforted Martha by patting her head and hugging her back but it only caused Martha to cry more.

" now, now… You should move as fast as you can. I'll secure your escape route. Meanwhile, you go and take the Prince."

Martha stared at Teresa's face with tears filled eyes, then she bit her lips forcefully that blood came out of the wound.

"You… take care…."

With that parting word, Martha ran out of the room while feeling guilty. She felt that she was abandoning her friend. Guilt started to gnaw on her heart.

"Ouji-sama, It is I, Martha. I've come to take you to a faraway place where danger won't reach you. Please bear with me for a while."

Martha gently caressed the cheeks of the child. As if reminding her own child back when he was still an infant. A smile appeared on her gentle face.

She wrapped the child in a cloth then gently carried him on her arms. Exiting the room, she saw two guards sprawled on the ground sleeping soundly.

When Martha went to the Prince's room, she brought a tray of food and drinks with the milk for the child.

"Thanks for your hard work, guard-san. This, please drink this water. I bet you didn't have water for some time so I brought you some."

"Oh, it's you, Martha. Perfect timing! We were so thirsty. My throat becomes so parched."

"Thank you, Martha."

The two guards hurriedly reach out to the glass and down it greedily while they thanked Martha.

"...huh? Now I'm sleepy… gonna… sleep… for a while…"

Then the two sprawled on the ground sleeping soundly.

"Yes, sleep tight."

Martha then came to an underground exit. According to Teresa, It was a hidden escape route for the Royalty in case of an emergency.

Teresa saw them off while waving her hand. Martha cast a worried glance but was replaced with a determined face and she nodded back on Teresa.

What awaits Martha at the end of the underground tunnel is a boy with luggage and a carriage for them to ride in.

'Teresa must have prepared the carriage and informed my son. Teresa… I won't forget your kindness…'

"Mother, I've been waiting! Now, let's go! The guards will be here soon!"

Then they went away with the carriage. Looking back at the silhouette of the Kingdom, Martha promises.

'One day, the Prince will come back and take what's rightfully his.'
