Death? I don’t want to die however I don’t fear it either… I have died once already. I was originally from Earth and died there at the age of thirty-two. While taking a short cut home through a construction site a white truck, of all things, fell on top of me. When I awoke, I was in this world, naked and in the middle of a glowing circle.
At the start I was super excited learning about Classes, Magic, Stats, Magicians, Monsters, Magic, Dungeons, and Magic! I dreamed of using magic long before coming to this world. Summoning lightning or demons to do my bidding. Sounds way better than a mundane class like warrior. Constantly using your body, running around as fast as you can, swinging a sword over and over and over… I’m so sick of swinging a sword around.
In this world I had no magical talent at all. Instead, I was called Hero, ‘Reigner of the Silent Sword’. Named Silent due to my lack of mana, the energy that formed magic. Unable to use magic and unaffected by it. Though it’s not all bad. The Hero class came with bonuses to stat gain, and with those stats I could move at speeds invisible to the average Adventurer’s eye. I was able use some magical items at least, just nothing that required mana to activate. Finding and collecting magical items had become one of my most enjoyable hobbies and was the best part of ascending the Tower.
When I first arrived, they named me Hero. But what is a Hero? It’s said that a Hero is someone that will save the people. A person that will challenge and defeat the overlord and bring in a new era of peace. Someone that will spend their life fighting, risking their life over and over while everyone else just sits back and watches. Sounds great! As long as that hero is not you and by you, I mean me.
What it really meant was endless days of training all year round without a break, constant lessons on dungeon lore, monster lore, magic lore, item lore, trap lore… All before even stepping into a dungeon.
You would think once training was over that you would have freedom to move as you like. Yeah, nah. Instead, the people place all their hopes and expectations on you and watch your every move like a hawk. The ruling class put together a group of Adventurers and called them the “Hero support team”, a traditional dungeon team that includes a Warrior, Priest, Rogue, and Mage. Nice enough people, however, I quickly learned they were here more to watch and make sure I was doing my duty, than provide assistance.
Then there was me. Standing at six-foot tall, brown hair, dark blue eyes, short beard, and a burly physique. The Hero. Summoned from Earth, by order of the king, to save the world and defeat the Tower.
Yup a tower. A massive pillar of stone and magic that was at the centre of what used to be a city. The historians said that the Tower used to be a great boon for tens of thousands of years. Providing access to rare trade goods, crafting materials, magical items, and more.
The tower of today was infested with an endless number of creatures that if not constantly culled swarmed out of the tower and wreak destruction to the land, killing anyone unlucky enough to be in their sights. Half of the adventurers today have been conscripted into the army, tasked with defending the last city remaining, while the other half brave the lower floors of the tower.
It was believed by the wisemen that the tower was once ruled by a Demi-God and since their death, has gone crazy. They also said that once the top floor has been cleared the tower will either collapse or go dormant.
Twenty seven years of non-stop weapon training and floor climbing has finally put me here, face to face with the last Guardian of the Tower. I couldn’t tell you what number this floor is. I stopped counting after a hundred. All the floors looked the same anyway, dark shadow filled caverns filled with ruins and monster dens.
It honestly felt like it would never end… until today… or tonight. I don’t actually know what time it is anymore.
I took a step forward and looked up, and up, and up some more until finally I gazed at the face of the final Guardian of the Tower. The top third of its body was covered in shadow. The only light visible were two white orbs of light, the Guardian’s eyes, glaring down towards me.
“I was expecting someone taller” I chuckle to myself while straining my neck looking up at the Guardian.
Coming death! These are the first thoughts that ran through my head however I quickly realised that these emotions were not my own. The Guardian had some fear ability. Quite a strong one for it to have any kind of impact on me. You know, being immune to magic and all.
Focusing back on the giant colossus in front of me, I used ‘inspect’, a skill that allowed me to garner some information on whatever was observed, however before I could check the results, a dark grey blur rushed towards me at an incredible speed. The Guardian’s attack took up my entire vision.
I didn’t have enough time to dodge so my only option was to strike first before getting hit. At near lightspeed, I pulled out my blade and sliced at the giant moving shadow in front of me in one smooth motion. My body performed the movement perfectly after years of endless repetition.
The world became silent and all that could be seen was a thin line of light from where I waved my sword. The giant grey mass split into two and blurred past me on either side while I remained untouched. The ground shook from the impact and it took a second for sound to return to the space around me.
Looking behind I saw a giant slab of stone half buried into the Tower floor. Turning back, the Guardian held the remains of what looked to be a massive stone hammer the size of a house.
The guardian was no joke, it’s so massive that I couldn’t keep the entire body inside my field of view.
A window of information from inspect appeared in front of me.

Those wisemen might have been right after all. Undead, Demi-God, and magic immunity. No wonder it’s so massive. The Undeadi-God started moving. It lifted it’s arm and prepared to throw what was left of the giant hammer towards me.
Before it built enough momentum, I crouched slightly building energy into my legs, then pushed off the floor, behind me was an explosion of noise, dust, and debris. Any adventurer seeing this might think “wow he is flying” but sadly this is just me jumping with my full might.
While in the air I positioned my blade and tensed my arms for a strike against the... Undeadi-God? Undead Demigod? My naming sense needed some work.
Moving closer, the giants head started to fill my entire vision until all I could see were it’s glowing eyes. Magical, glowing orbs, for eyes… awesome magical eyes… This Tower continues to mock me.
I could see a warped image of myself reflected off it’s golden mirror like skin and gave myself a grin and a wink.
The mouth of the giant opened and the world was filled with noise. It felt like the very air was being ripped apart. Everything in my vision was vibrating uncontrollably. “Enough of that” my arms flickered in a series of movements each wave left behind thin white lines extending outwards and cut everything in front of me. The air calmed down and quietened. I liked to pretend that my sword was actually a sharp wand and my slices were magic bolts. I reached the zenith of my leap and since I could not fly, started falling. Another reminder of my lack of casting ability.
The Giant’s eyes dimmed as white lines could be seen crisscrossing all over its head and neck. The head disassembled into small pieces and fell after me.
This was a problem, I used most of my energy in that last strike and now only have enough to control my landing. I won’t be able to dodge or cut any of the Giant’s falling mass. I used the last of my stamina potions before entering the Guardians floor. Luckily, the Guardian’s head bits started dissolving into motes of bright red light. The body also started breaking up into orbs of light. The view was spectacular, like a meteor shower on a dark night. Only the lights were moving up, away from me, while I’m falling… no… Second half jumping? Post leaping?... Calculating my landing. Wouldn’t want to give the impression I didn’t have control of my decent.
I lost 40% health from the giants scream alone. That hammer would have likely ended me. Those thousands of hours in training did not go to waste. If you could dodge a thirty ton rock flying towards you then you can dodge just about anything, I would imagine.
I lamented to myself once again that I am unable to use magic. I have always been fascinated with magic, the ability to manipulate the very elements is every gamer’s dream. Those that could study magic lived for hundreds of years. Everyone born in this world had an affinity to a magical domain and could earn a long lifespan. I’ll be lucky to reach 80 years.
During my training, the Grand Magi were fascinated by my affinities. They told me I’m very special. One in a billion, they say. One of those lucky people that have zero in every single god damned affinity of magic.
“Argh!” in my frustration I landed on the ground and kicked the nearest thing next to me, which happened to be the handle of the dead undead Demi-God’s. dead Undeadi-God? regular Deadi-God?... The Guardian’s hammer... The broken weapon sailed through the air and smashed into a wall some distance away creating a boom that echoed in the giant cavern.
“Oh well…Can’t use magic but at least there is still loot to look forward to.”
What I was really excited about was leaving this tower. I have spent almost two decades in here. I know that because Ronald, the tank of the support group had one spell that kept track of the date. He loved casting the spell in front of me at every opportunity and would smugly grin at me while telling me how long we have been in here. He started saying I would die an old man in here and only stopped after I broke his arm, the one he casted that bloody spell with, and threatened to break his legs next.
Behind where the giant Guardian was, stood a solid gold door. I couldn’t help but anticipate at what might be behind such an appealing entrance. There were a series of locks on the door. The team Rogue normally handled all the locked doors but since he was not here… I Pulled out my sword and made a few cuts, the door collapsed into small hand sized, easy to carry, chunks.
Inside the room were six large chests, two on each wall. In the middle of the room was a small marble pillar supporting a floating book. Opening one of the chests revealed thousands of gold coins, glowing trinkets, and hundreds of gems. Looking into the other chests revealed that they all contained more of the same. I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. I was hoping to find something special on the last floor of the tower. The chests contained what has been found on almost every floor below. That just left the book. It’s probably magical. I’m sure it will make Lilly, the team’s mage very happy.
Walking up to the pillar I used inspect on the book.
[Tome of New beginnings]
Rank: Godly
On use: Class change to Summoner.
Transportation to Tower(?)’s entrance.
“Godly?” I Yelled out in excitement and grasped onto the sides of the pillar for support.
After spending as much time in the tower seeing all kinds of loot, I considered myself a bit of an expert when it came to magical items. However, I have never heard or seen an item of this rank.
“Reigner! We made it through!”
Jumping at the sound I looked back at the entrance of the cavern and saw the support team entering.
Damnit! If they even get a glance at this book, they will want to bring it back to the master mages for study. If they get their near immortal lifespan’s hands on it, I might never get to see it again in my lifetime. “Was there a door here?... Oh Hey, the loot room! Reigner is over here guys!” I heard the team rogue, Lex, enter the room and move over to one of the gold filled chests.
“Hey Hero, you did it!” the silky voice of the team mage, Lilly, echoed from the doorway “What was the Guardian like?” She was the only member of the team I genuinely got along with as we both shared a passion for magical items. She’s the only mage I have met that didn’t look down on me for my lack of mana affinity. “Oh! what’s that? a book?” It took only a moment for her to notice the centrepiece of the room. “GODLY!?” Glancing over my shoulder I saw her staring at the book with desire gleaming in her eyes. She extended her hands out towards the book.
I couldn’t let this opportunity slip by me. In the time between heartbeats, before anyone could make a move, I grabbed hold of the book and opened it to the first page. “What are you do-” were the last words I heard as my vision filled with white light.
After a few seconds my eyes started to adjust, and I looked up from the book and saw that I was alone in a hallway made of light. The hallway started to grow and stretch, changing into what looked to be a highway from Earth. In the distance something was moving towards me incredibly fast.
Once it was closer, I recognised what it was. A truck… A white truck.
“You’re joking” The last sound I heard was my own laugher before the truck slammed into me.
